You may remember we used to have a regular feature called ‘Sonic Scansday’. It happened every Wednesday, where I would offer a special update devoted to scans. Well, now TSS is back, it’s time to beckon Scansdays again.
For now, Sonic Scansday will only happen on certain Wednesdays instead of every week, because of the amount I have to scan, and the fact that the whole thing may last a few months only. But, here’s today’s offering:
- New Phantasy Star Online scan, of SEGA registering a star and naming it ‘Ragol’. Cute, no?
- Fleetway Issue 7 and Issue 98 have been added. While I’m on the subject, check out the Comics section. Go on. You can read some Archies and fully scanned Fleetways and whatever. ^_^ Scans of these issues are from JDogg and ZSaiyanHajimeZ respectively. Sorry it took so long, guys =)
- Archie Issue 111 Cover, donated by “Tails the Echidna“.

Hiya everyone, second day of TSS’ return, yay! Right, let’s get the updates and site news out of the way.
- Cyberblade is still a lazy bum, so unfortunately you’ll have to wait a bit for your SAGE 8 Part 2 coverage. Honestly, something that should take a couple of hours… If he hasn’t done it by Thursday you can officially lynch mob him in the SSMB ^_^
- Some links have been updated, in the Links Database and the main affiliates – Sonic World and Sonic Planet.
- Fixed the dead links that I was aware of, if you find any more let me know. Also, realised the whole Site History section wasn’t even uploaded – D’oh! So I did that for you 🙂 Also, opened the Guestbook – I thought there was a problem with it, but it seems that there’s just an anti-flood thing on it =)
- The TSS FTP Service is offline until further notice. You may find it online every now and then (I haven’t actually gotten the word from Fastfeet that it’s totally offline) but on the whole it’s down. It shan’t be too long until it’s back online though, and we’ll let you know when that happens 🙂

Well, it’s a fabulous honour to say “Welcome back to The Sonic Stadium!” It’s been a long three/four months, but it looks like through thick and thin, we’ve managed to find our feet. And it’s all worth it in the end – before we crashed we provided thousands of people with Sonic goodness. And now we’re back to provide even more!
But things have changed somewhat. The navigation bar will be different depending on what page you are on, and the main sectors of TSS will show up just like they are now on this page, whenever you’re at the root of TSS. This is to kill the navigation problem that people were having – if you get lost, there are links to the Site Map just below the “TSS Network” button in the header, so hopefully TSS is easier and more fun to surf around. Prower Power is planning a new summer event called ‘Chaos Con’, and it will be an exposition for all Sonic areas of fandom: Fanart, games, fiction and comics. Prizes are rumoured. The Sonic Stadium and Sonic News are set to cover the event when it begins in June.

SAGE 8 appears just in time for the Spring Season, and much talk has been discussed about the March show of the Sonic Amateur Games Expo being canned in favour of the Autumn section of the show, the latter of which being traditionally more popular. But now that SAGE 7 helped make the event interesting again (not to mention TSS’ exclusive coverage), SAGE 8 has literally blown us away! 68 registered booths for the March event, with the website taking a more classic look – seems like there’s life left in the old donkey after all.

Featured Games
Chao Online – Marc Gordon
Chao Online is an advanced version of the Tiny Chao Gardens you find on Sonic Advance, Sonic Pinball Party et al. Essentially, it brings all the features from the 3D games, like Chao Karate, Racing, Chao Adventure… into a fully online title! This sounds like a very interesting concept, and since Chao are pretty much a broken commodity on Sonic games, despite the rather large fanbase for them, Chao Online could be just the community get-together we could wish for.
Sonic: Project Mettrix – Organised Chaos
If you’ve never heard of “Project Mettrix”, then prepare to be amazed. It’s a Sonic fangame, but the quality is such that you’d think it was “Sonic 3 & Knuckles 2”! The engine is perfected and last SAGE there was a playable demo that stunned the world. This SAGE unfortunately the only thing that’s new is a new engine. But, more exciting than it appears, this engine is much more advanced than the last one, so when they return next time expect to see some, as some delinquents would call, 1337n3$$.
Sonic the Fighters II – Shadow Team
Sonic the Fighters 2 is the latest major title from Shadow Team, a fangame development ‘studio’ that’s deeply linked with The Sonic Stadium. In STF2 you take control of many of your favourite Sonic characters and duke it out with others to beat them and progress – your aim? To defeat Quicksilver, a robot formed from a nasty experiment from Eggman involving Metal Sonic and Shadow. Multi-player modes are confirmed, with dedicated 2-Player and 4-Player party modes planned. The first demo was launched at SAGE 8, and most people who have played it seemed to love it, which is cool. Shadow Team’s booth also consisted of ‘Sonic Ultimate’, the major project from a new arm of Shadow Team, Cyberblade Productions. Sonic Ultimate is a platforming Sonic game with back-to-the-roots action, and it’s coming along great. We’ll be back for SAGE 9, so look out for us there!
Dimension Warped – Intelligence Squared
Could this be the first true 3D Sonic the Hedgehog fangame? Time will tell, but Dimension Warped is currently impressing all and sundry at SAGE, even with limited information and nothing but concepts and CG art in the way of images. The promise is riding heavy on this, and hopefully the promise will be fulfilled: A custom level editor, 2 player co-operative mode and even customizeable characters are slated for addition, the latter most likely coming along as some kind of patch soon after the actual game is finished. The concept arts and models of Sonic, Shadow and company look great, with a cel-shaded twist to them. Keep a fat eye on this one.
Retro Sonic – Taxman
The last time we saw Retro Sonic, we were blown away. Much akin to Sonic Mettrix, this is a Sonic game that we last saw in 2002 that is being made in C++ programming. The developer, Taxman, is incredibly talented and the demo we played made our jaws drop. The appearance of Retro Sonic at SAGE 8 brings nothing but more surprise, as Taxman announces he’s to completely re-write the engine for the game to include a multi-player option, larger levels, accurately programmed shields and other gameplay elements and even a better special stage. Even more breathtaking is that Taxman is also in development with the ‘Retro Sonic Development Kit’, which when finished, will allow your average joe to make a complex new or even recreate original Sonic the Hedgehog zones. When Retro Sonic is finished you’ll be packing your pants to see it, just like we are right now… Maybe we shouldn’t have said that.

Early in the hours of this morning, a pleasant chap decided to hack into the servers of SonicAnime.net, which hosts TSS, and used it’s SMTP system to bulk mail several people that The Sonic Stadium and the Message Board was to close down. Naturally, the return sender was “Dreadknux” and the return address my email.
Let me say now that this is completely untrue. First of all the person who sent the original email types nothing like me, for starters he must have the IQ of 50 to spell and punctuate like he did (whilst trying to pass himself off for me). Second of all there is a way I tag my emails, and this was missing from “my email”. Nonetheless, it caused a minimal panic. Thankfully, some people realise that is was a hoax created by someone without two brain cells to humble themselves, and now I hope that the whole matter is dispelled.
As for announcements regarding TSS and the SSMB, they will always ALWAYS be announced on the site, be it the SSMB, TSS or Sonic News. They will NEVER be sent to you in an email. Always check the website for the official line on what is happening with TSS projects and status.
… Seeings as we have so much lined up for 2004 – new look Sega Sonic Radio, ‘Real Prize’ competitions, official press statements on Sonic games straight from SEGA themselves, and of course, Sonic Smash Cards, we’ll be here for a loooooooooooooooooong time yet.
And no amount of lowlife hermit ‘hackers’ (read: pre-teen 13 year olds who think it’s funny to perform pointless tasks to destroy sites in an attempt to make themselves jack off successfully) is going to deter me from keeping this site open. TSS is here to STAY!

Sonic Heroes. One of the most anticipated games of the year. First Americans were told to wait 16th-ish January 2004 for the game, while Japan had it coming mid December ’03. Europe was unconfirmed.
SEGA Europe treated us to a 5th December release date for Heroes, something so that us Europeans could be thankful for living in the hell-hole of games releases (not including New Zealand and Australia) for once.
Then the US release date went FORWARD (very uncommon), the Jap release got pushed BACK and the European release was still the same. It’s most likely that there was some miscommunication, but apparently SEGA Europe assured everyone the date of Heroes will be before the Japanese release date.
5th December has come and gone, and no Sonic Heroes. It looks like the online shops are right about the game being pushed back as far as FEBRUARY 2004 for Europe. At present we’re contacting SEGA Europe about this, but at the moment, it looks like there’ll be no promised Sonic this Christmas for us Europeans. Shame that.

SEGA Europe has begun a national search for a Real Life Billy Hatcher. In Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (a review of which at TSS can be found here), you needed courage to overcome the threat of the evil crows.
SEGA are looking for kids aged between 5 and 16 years old, with an extraordinary story of real life courage or kindness to help others out. Here’s part of the “press-y”:
Do you know a child that has gone to exceptional lengths to be kind to others. Has your friend beaten all odds to overcome difficulties? Or perhaps a brother or sister has reacted with strength and courage in the face of tragedy.
It doesn’t have to be you, or if you’re too old, you can nominate a younger cousin, sibling or other friend that has something on a par with the Chicken-Suit-Wearing freak that is Billy.
What happens if you win? Well, the kid awarded as the national ‘Real Billy Hatcher’ will get an exclusive day out at the SEGA Europe Headquarters in London, where you get to become a games tester there for a day (SO, that’s how they process an application is it? =_=), giving feedback to the chiefs on unreleased SEGA games. Regional winners will also win a specialised ‘Billy Hatcher Bedroom’, where your room will win Billy Hatcher bedroom decorations, a games theatre (including a console and SEGA games), and most likely a copy of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg.
To participate, you have until the end of January 2004 to get your application in – go here for the information: Billy Hatcher Official Website, and click the signpost that Recky is holding to the left.
Good luck to those that participate!

Hey guys! How’d you like the new Christmas theme to TSS? NiGHTS, for those that don’t know, is a character created by Sonic Team during the Sega Saturn days. Needless to say, it was an instant classic, and it’s got an army of cult fans begging Naka-san to make a remake or sequel. Will “The Man” succumb to the pressure though? Hmmm, maybe. He’s on and off about it most days.
We decided to celebrate NiGHTS Christmas style, and we’ve just bagged a whole heap of exclusive NiGHTS material! Cover Scans, Manual Scans, Reviews, Music MP3s and much more will be handed your way each week, as NiGHTS takes over Santa’s job. Aren’t we great? =P
Also, as time goes on, we’ll be covering Sonic Battle, which is due for Japanese release on the 16th, if sources are to be believed. I’m ordering my copy right now, so expect a review by the end of the year – speaking of the end of the year, Sonic Heroes is due for Japanese release then too, so you can expect a review on Heroes, the Sonic world’s most anticipated game, by the time the Americans get their grubby mitts on it. 😉
TSS will be the place to be over the coming weeks, have a merry Lead-Up-To-Christmas! ^_^

The Sonic Stadium’s biggest assets was always the Video Games section. It’s been applauded as the biggest Sonic games database online, and as you may know, it’s been poor lately. We have been attempting to work a new look about the place.
We can happily say that it is finally complete.
You can head to the revamped VG section here
Plus, we felt this as a chance to clear out all the submitted stuff that has been clogging up our systems. So, along with the new look, we’ve added a ton of new material. Because we can’t remember all of it, we’ll just make a list of what we remembered we added below:
- Sonic Heroes: NEW PREVIEW, New Screens, New Boxart and Character Artwork, EGM Preview Scans, EXCLUSIVE TGS Flyer Scan
- New Reviews: Sonic Mega Collection, Sonic Pinball Party, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
- Sonic the Hedgehog Japanese Manual Scan =EXCLUSIVE=
- New SegaSonic Arcade/Sonic the Fighters screens
- Sonic Jam Game.com version boxart and manual scan =EXCLUSIVE=
- New Cheats: Billy Hatcher, Sonic Adventure
- Sonic Adventure DX Short FAQ added
- Sonic 3 ‘Mystery Cheat’ page created – along with your opinions =EXCLUSIVE=
- New Fan Reviews: Sonic Adventure, SA:DX, SA2Battle, Billy Hatcher, SA2, Sonic Advance, SegaSonic Arcade, Sonic Advance 2.
There’s more in there, and more will be added of course, as it’ll be business as usual again for the VG section. ^_^
That’s not all. Over the coming weeks, TSS will be having somewhat of a NiGHTS Winter Wonderland theme, as we give you exclusive NiGHTS material, more news and previews on Sonic Heroes and, of course, Sonic Battle. Yes, Christmas will be very happy for you with The Sonic Stadium.
… Just make sure you check back regularly, schamone. 😉

Well, hopefully those of you that took notice of the biggest online Sonic event of the year will know all of this information already, but The Sonic Site Awards 2003 is now officially over.
For ‘backhander’ purposes, The Sonic Stadium, the SSMB and Sonic News cannot take part in this event, seeings as we host it. Shadow Team was allowed to take part in the Fan Game Developer section however, because it’s a seperate entity, only hosted at TSS. Never mind the fact that I’m a member of Shadow Team, I haven’t done anything other than plug their stuff yet ;P
Anyway, click here for the results, awards, and vote margins!
http://www.sonicstadium.org/~siteawa rds/
The event went very well: many people gathered in the chat room, and a constant rate of about 15-20 people were listening to myself, Anarchy Rat and Roareye mess about… oh and we announced some awards too.
For those that missed the LiVECAST, there will soon be a streaming version for you to download on the official SSA website, so you can listen to it on demand. The results will also be posted on SSR 24/7 over the next week, playing at random times.
Damian Grove (aka Saxman) was also featured in the Ceremony, with the playing of his musical compositions. Nothing like giving a fellow webmaster some nice coverage, so when you listen back to the LiVECAST, you’ll be able to hear Damian’s two self-written compositions; “She’s Mine” and “Live It Up”, and a cover song called “The Heart of Rock and Roll” (from a band that’s before my time, but there you go). You can find out more at the SSA front page, where we hold a link to his music. Should you wish to listen to more of Saxman’s music, click here:

First off, I don’t want any comments asking where the old ‘latest’ update went. Controversy ahoy and all that, so I just got rid of it.
Second of all, the VG section IS rather massive, so the uber-update will be sometime later this or next week. Bear with me here, there’s a lotta games 😉
Thirdly, thanks to B’man, we have a banner rotation system. Choice. Something I didn’t tell you about before too, is a ‘DONATE to TSS’ button by the banners. Click on the button to read more about why donating to us is “T3H good”, what the money goes to and all that crud. 🙂 Later on today there will be the option to add your site to the Banner Rotation, and details will follow when the donation button up there changes to add another link.

Visit the TSS Copycats Section
Everyone who knows me well knows that I’m a pretty open-minded guy. I’m quite calm and cool under various situations… However, they will also know that there is really only a few things that I find a sensitive issue.
Copyright infringement of my stuff is one. People who don’t know me well will think that with this Copycats section I’m overreacting and sensationalising the whole issue, but then again what would you do in my position? I am very impartial in my methods when it comes to dealing with offenders.
And it’s not as if I don’t give people enough warning: THERE IS A COPYRIGHT STATEMENT, of which you can get to from the link at the BOTTOM OF ANY PAGE at TSS! It’s not too hard to just check and see what is acceptable to ‘steal’ and what isn’t. For me, things that are not acceptable are my own hand-made things. Stuff like images and, most especially, layouts.
Now recently, the TSS Layouts section has been the centre of activity for mindless n00bs who don’t have two brain cells to humble themselves with. They want to make a site? Sure, go ahead – hey, WHAT are you doing with MY stuff, Gringo!?
What has this internet community come to these days? Back when I started, it was always a case of respect – learn your way, and learn from friends too. Now it’s just “find the most popular site and nick off with their bits and bobs”. Sorry, that’s NOT what I condone. The TSS Old Layouts section is NOT a Free Web Templates portal – repeat, it is NOT. It IS there to outline the history of the site, and for people to discover TSS’ past.
I have taken measures to help protect old layout pages as of today, to help prevent people from stealing my old layouts in future – hey, it’s not like I WANT people to do it: the Copycats section is there as a prevention device as well. I don’t want to take the section down; I love my old layouts, and I want to share them with you all. However, I don’t want dumbarses (sorry, but that’s what you are) just stumbling across an old layout, assume because I’m not using it that you can get away with stealing it, and pass it off as your own.
With layouts, there is no way around it – you CANNOT use them for your own purposes. Not even if you ask me first. Not even if you vow to put a link to who made the template. I’M NOT A TEMPLATE MAKING SERVICE. Go and find some other way to fill the void in your brain where your imagination and initiative should be.
As for the latest offender, it’s a place called Sonic Kid’s and V-Dood’s Sonic 3 BETA Page. What hurts me most is that it’s a ripoff of TSS’ very first design – one of the past layouts I hold most dear to me. Check the Copycats section to see it, and also, I’ve added links to awards handed out to the finders of these sick copycats. ^_-
That is all, that was my rant. Goodnight.
Oh, and I’m reworking the VG section BIG TIME – I know I said it before, but I mean it. It will be the next thing I update, and all the games will be restored. Chekkit.

UPDATE: Decided that the look wasn’t _quite_ right, so I altered the navigation menu underneath the Archie page so it’s easier to surf around. I also removed the Off-Panel scans (no point keeping them), and the Dan Drazen Reviews will be back up shortly. I have added a ‘Previews’ page of upcoming Archies, from information gathered from comic sources online.

The forums has been hacked. Who ever hacked it caused the message, “Death to Sonic Stadium” to appear instead of the forums. I’ve searched the forum’s source code and have so far found nothing that could explain the message showing up. I can’t promiss when the forums will be back up because I don’t know how the hacker caused the message to show up. In the mean time, use the chat room to converse with your fellow Sonic the Hedgehog fans. It just makes me sick that some would would do this on the eve of this site’s birthday…

It was going to be one day, running into several days. However you look at it, TSS’ third birthday is too packed in one day to have you do all the things on show during the one afternoon that you can do after getting back from school, college or work.
Which is why TSS’ third Birthday bash is now going to span the whole weekend. It was going to anyway, but we are going to space our activites out into time slots that are best for you.
First off, FRIDAY:
- Announcement of Operation Grandslam. It will be a new feature, not a simple update of any section at TSS, and should rock the foundations of the Sonic site world if this turns out to be well-recieved.
- Dreadknux goes LiVE on us! During 7pm-9pm GMT (UK) time, Dread will be on Sega Sonic Radio: LiVECAST giving you the best beats, and his own hammed up British voice! The voice is an attraction in itself, such a sexy voice… not that I’m biased or anything ;D
- Get to the #IRC Chat room also, as SSR will be focusing on the TSS Chat room and we will be playing games and quizzes and such. It’ll be a grand old time ^^
SATURDAY:
- This is the official start of the TSS TREASURE HUNT. It’s been moved to Saturday so that you got a whole day to find all the clues, and basically it’s best to dedicate a whole day for it. The prize is another new feature exclusive to TSS, and you will like it very much 🙂
- SSR: LiVECASTs and the IRC Chat Room will also be heavily focused upon, as Dread gets back on the mic and also gives reports on the Treasure Hunt!
SUNDAY:
- SonicSpeedL and a team of other TSS fans who regularly visit the Sonic Stadium Message Board (SSMB) will have a TSS-exclusive comic ready for launch on Sunday. All comic fans should check this out, especially SSMB members – as it will feature many SSMB members too, if not in the premier issue then in future issues!
- Think we’re going to let you go high and dry and give you a chance to catch your breath? Think AGAIN! An official announcement will be made today as to the actual date for the SONIC SITE AWARDS 2003 CEREMONY! This date marks THE event of the year for many webmasters, as it recognises both large and small, old and newcoming Sonic sites for their efforts in web design and Sonic content. It’s just one party after another eh? 😉
After this party, Dreadknux will be rocking the mic on a regular basis on Sega Sonic Radio: LiVECAST! TSS’ Third Birthday marks the birth of “Dreadknux’s Sonic Hour!”, and it will be at least a fornightly radio show, so make sure you tune in if you like Dread’s eccentricity 😉
So, is that a weekend or what?
EVEN MORE GOOD NEWS:
The Sonic Stadium has this morning reached it’s 200,000th visit count!!!! ^_______^ This is a tremendous birthday present in itself for TSS from you, the Sonic fan. We thank you for coming to TSS as your #1 Resource in Sonic the Hedgehog, and Friday marks a new dawn, a whole new beginning, for Sonic sites in general!
LOVE SONIC? LOVE THE SONIC STADIUM!!!

Right, after putting it off for Operation Grandslam and the new look, I’m finally getting round to spending more time on renovating the Video Games section at long last. Sonic Adventure has been re-opened at long last, and for good reason. Take a look at the two pictures below:
They are fantastic, aren’t they? Pachuka of Sonic CulT offered these to TSS to report on first-dibs, so thanks to Pach for that. The first image was actually discovered by Solly of Dream Avenue however, and is original concept art for Sonic Adventure – presumably the only artwork for Tikal, and this didn’t even get released. The second image is the same, only coloured and cleaned up by KojiChao, a fabulous Sonic artist who usually regulars Sonic CulT.
You can view these and all the other Sonic Adventure artwork here:
- Sonic Adventure Artwork Section
- Click here to go to the Sonic Adventure VG page
A general rule of thumb for those new to the site – General Sonic artwork goes in the Media Channel’s Artwork section (such as the bulk of the Sonic Jam artwork). Actual Game Promotional artwork will be in the section of the relevant video game, in the Video Games section – it’s the same for all related thing for the games, excepting Music downloads and movies. So remember that, the VG section is much bigger than you think. Pay more of a visit there sometime. 😉
Well, after all that, the Sonic Adventure section represents what the other VG sections will look like pretty soon once they’re all up to speed too – if you have anything regarding concept art, or other information and game media similar besides, be sure to contact TSS about it. ^_^ Oh, and look out for a completely refurbished Cellphone Games section… coming soon… 🙂

- The History of Sonic
This is it, I’m off to Uni in two days. Tomorrow I’ll be packing my PC up, and sorting stuff out. But fear not, as I’ve said before I have the other TSS staff workers working vigilantly on the site to make it cool while I’m gone.
Before I go, I’ve added YET another section from the grave. This was on TSS ages ago, but I’ve changed it about a bit, merged the extra info from SSNG and such and renamed it “The History of Sonic”. Because that’s what it’ll be – a regularly updated section on Sonic game releases, events and pictures to boot. Make sure you check out that Sonic Advance GBA Ad in there – MAGICAL! 😉
Be cool, and, for the last time in a while, STAY ICE 🙂

Many people have come to us on this, Mj2 and Very Crazy Penguin, but the first place for the news, as with many things TSS-wise, was reported on the Sonic Stadium Message Board.
Sonic Adventure DX, a recent port of the original Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast, looks set to branch out on the PC as well as Nintendo GameCube. Here are some screens, courtest of GameOnline, a japanese gaming website:
All the features from the GameCube version will be present, such as the Game Gear titles, and it being a PC title will probably be much cheaper than the GC outing, with early screens already showing graphics about 10 times better than the Nintendo ‘Cube effort. Looks like Sonic Team are trying this time. *shot*
As always, we will keep a close eye on it, and a new game section will open up soon.

TSS #IRC Chat Room
The Sonic Site Awards 2003
First off, after trying to get the hang of mySQL, the new encyclopedia is finished. Not complete yet though, so we’re constantly adding new entries to the database. Go and see for yourself. 😛
Second, we added a new IRC Chat Room the other week. After a period of dead space, it seems that visitors are noticing and getting interested in the chat, which is great news! Make sure you log in and idle in there – just keep the window open while on the internet – that makes the place more lively.
Finally, the Sonic Site Awards 2003 has been overwhelming this far! The closing date for votes for PHASE II is the 29TH SEPTEMBER 2003! So make sure you make that final push for your favourite site or person for these last few days! Every vote counts! I’ll be taking a short break while I’m going to University on the 30th September, so Sonic_Hedgehogs will be taking the reigns from me for a short while. Don’t worry, your favourite Sonic source will return back to normality soon – I just need a break x_x 3 years on a site can do you in. Also, I need to get accustomed to Uni life without a site blocking the way 😉 Have fun, and I’ll see ya soon!

Gee, SAGE 7 over already? Although seeming fast, it’s perhaps the first time in ages that the doors have been open the full 2 weeks, which is an impressive start to a better SAGE at least. The SAGE events that had not been covered by TSS earlier this year and last year were hailed as souless, with hardly anybosy participating.
I’m happy to report that SAGE 7, although not setting the world alight, has been a massive improvement since we last covered SAGE in March 2002. Although he often gets a lot of flak for his work (and mostly coming across as a big-head: not my words), Luckett X has done an excellent job running SAGE this year. Today we have an exclusive interview with Mj2 the creator of the fan game Chaos Control a very unique game which takes on a very ‘stealthy’ approach to Sonic. I take a peek closer at the past, presnt and future of the game. Interview by FastFeet.
TSS: Welcome to the Sonic Stadium Mj2, I can call you mj2 right?
Mj2: Thanks, sure.
TSS: So you’re main game as far as I know is Chaos Control, tell us a little about the game and yourself.
Mj2: Well, I started Chaos Control 3 years ago. The plan for the game was to make something different, so I wanted to change the gameplay from a normal Sonic game and create a storyline that will keep the player on the edge of his/her seat.
TSS: Well originality is always something to look for in a game, what changes have been made to the game into the lead up to sage this year?
Mj2: I have remade the whole engine. I have made a much more advanced AI for the guards, they now follow you, work in teams and hunt you out. I have also added a lot more to the gameplay such as new player movements, more interactive levels (example, if you hide behind an object, the guards can now shoot the object away) and made the game much harder. One feature I am very pleased with is the ‘Wild-life’. I showed this in the SAGE trailer, the bird flying out of the bushes and waking the guard up.
TSS: Sounds brilliant tell us a little about the story of Chaos Control?
Mj2: The story, this is something I want the player to experience for themself so I cannot give too much away. After the events of Chaos Control 1, Sonic died in a blast at the Dust Hill Zone, he asked Tails for help, however it appeared Tails turned off his radio. Chaos Control 2 (the current game) is set two years after the ‘Dust Hill Event’ and has Tails returning as a leader of a military group. You play as one of the members of this group, a young fox called Raiden. Expect a lot of twists and turns, some I know will shock the player.
TSS: So what sort of secrets or additional features is the game incorporating or going to incorporate into it?
Mj2: Secrets and Additional features, 50 VR missions, 3 unlockable levels, 4 unlockable characters, art gallery, cheats 😛 and a cell shaded mode, something that really changes the look of the game. Then we have the online mode . . .
TSS: This is sounding to be one hell of a game and with 3 years in the making when is the game going to be released?
Mj2: 2004 hopefully.
TSS: I’ve noticed you’ve also contributed your efforts to other games and developer why was this?
Mj2: I started working on Chaos Control Online with Sparks to give the game a ‘team’ feel and I have always wanted to make an online game. CC Chronicles : Revolutions is to give the player a bit of background on whole story of Chaos Control, I had so many ideas what could not fit in a single game. I have also helped out other peoples games as and when they have asked me.
TSS: How long is the game going to be and how many characters can you play as, seeing as there are some completely original characters?
Mj2: The main Chaos Control series will be 3 games long. Chaos Control 1 was very short due to the fact it was basically just an introduction to the series. Chaos Control 2 is much longer, with at least 9 levels, most of these levels are split into 3 parts. Chaos Control 3 I have 7 levels planned at the moment, however I fell that CC3 will end up being the biggest game of them all. You play as Raiden and Maria mainly in Chaos Control 2, you do get to control Hardaway and Viper at some stages, as for CC3, well lets say the characters you control on that game will be a shock. You get to control all the characters from CC2 in CC:Online and in CC Chronicles : Revolutions you control ‘Slither’.
TSS: Very nice indeed. How do you feel this year’s sage has been and what has caught your eye this year?
Mj2: I have been kinda disappointed with the last two SAGE’s, people seem to be making the same old Sonic games, Eggman gets the Emeralds and it is up to Sonic to save them. What has caught my eye? Well I have been waiting (like everyone else) for STA, however I was also kinda disappointed with that, the games that I really want to see completed is Sonic Switch and Sonic XG, Shadow Team’s games look good as well, I am looking forward to seeing how they come on. I have been told SAGE 8 will be something great, so I have my fingers crossed.
TSS: I agree with that very much so. Well we’ve run out of time unfortunately anything else to say to the readers from SAGE-land? ^_^
Mj2: Thanks for all the support and feedback you have sent me, I am looking forward to releasing the game to you all. Thanks again.
No thank you Mj2 it’s been great speaking to you again, hopefully be speaking soon. Watch out for Chaos Control a very good upcoming fan game, not to be missed!

Day Two of SAGE: A New Beginning, Sonic Ultimate: New Beginnings that is! Today we have an interview with Ultrasonic the creator of this fabulous game, read on to see more info on Ultrasonics game…
TSS: Good afternoon Ultrasonic it’s a pleasure to have your company today ^_^.
US: It’s a pleasure to be your company today. Now on with the questions!
TSS: This is the first time we’ve spoken to you on Sonic Ultimate, now titled Sonic Ultimate: New Beginnings. My first question would have to be why the change in name of the game what’s so “New” about this game?
US: Well, “The New Beginings” is less telling of something new then that it actually means I went to a new begining. During mid development, my computer went to heck and I lost the game in the process. The New Beginings basically means that I started basically back at sqaure 1 with very little of an engine left.
TSS: I see, so what is left of your game engine and is there any major changes that have been implemented into the new beginnings version?
US: Well, the new beginings actually retained much of the original engine, which by the way I can’t take credit for. A few modifications have been made, such as a slightly better spindash, and the original had no sound. None, rings didn’t ring. Supersonic is being implemented but is early right now, but a nice flame effect is finished for him but more spriting is necessary.
TSS: So what sort of a storyline have you cooked up for us in the game?
US: Well, I wanted something extremely basic. Not as detailed as some of the other things out there. The story was also cooked up to represent the random levels system in game. Eggman has found a chaos Emerald, which he has used to power a machine which changes zones. Sonic now has to find his way to eggman without knowing wheres he’s going. The random levels system amy be simplified due to space restrictions. One level and it’s already about 5 megs.
TSS: That does present problems for people who want to download it. I’ve noticed that there are some secrets already included in the game such as the Hidden Palace Zone can we expect to see similar secrets in the full game?
US: Oh god without secrets my game would be like all the other games out there which have failed! I’m planning a ton of secrets which may end up also linking to my comic series The Sonic Chronicles. Supersonic is a given, and you may find some TSS favorites including one of my good buddies Dread. I’ll be in there as well, and many more secret levels are also planned.
TSS: Ah so nothings to be leaked until the release ^_^. The game handles fairly nicely when played what sort of improvements could you inflict upon the game in the near future?
US: Well, probably an easier wall jump. Dread seems to say it’s hard to do but it’s easier. I also noticed it takes 500 miles just to stop from braking, and you get flung miles away when you get hit. I’m also considering a completely new set of graphics. Sonic’s has already been completed but other then Sonic I have no clue about new graphics everywhere.
TSS: So any new characters for the furture at all?
US: Well, plans for Tails and Knuckles are being made, and many secret characters are also being planned. No details on them yet because they’re on paper at the moment.
TSS: I see very interesting I shall have to watch out for any new developments. So how long and how big should I say is the final product going to be, and is there any sort of release date at all?
US: Release date? I’m not going to give a release date because I have no clue. The way I see it is it’s released when it’s released. You’l know when, but expect the final product to be huge at the rate it’s going. Not just game wise but size wise. It’s already 5 megs!
TSS: Well I’m looking forward to the final product just last couple of questions, what have you thought of this years sage compared to previous years?
US: Well, I’ve only been to one othe a few years ago, and I only went there to see SRB2. This could be considered my first SAGE in most ways.
TSS: Anything else you’d like to share with us about Sonic Ultimate: New Beginnings?
US: There’s a chance that something huge will happen with it soon, but theres also a chance of it not happening. Chances are getting higher, but trust me that you’ll definately know if it happens. The SSMB will definately know because I’ll brag myself to death if it happens.
TSS: Good good, Ultrasonic it’s been a pleasure chatting to you about Sonic Ultimate New Beginnings, hope we can do this again some time.
US: Me too. You’ll be chatting with me again about something else should that big thing happen. Trust me.

SAGE is a two week event. TSS gets the coverage during the second week. And we get word today that the SAGE event will close tonight.
So, just before you go ape over the whole thing closing early yet another time, TSS has managed to save all the booth links, so at least you’ll still get the booth reports each day.
Let’s hope, come March next year, when we cover SAGE 2004 Season 1, that Perfect Chaos 0 (the guy supposedly taking over the reigns from Luckett X) will do a better job with time keeping. =/

Our first peep to interview about this SAGE on is Myst Hedgehog, who is the developer of Sonic: Eternal Rings. We spoke to him last year about the same game, and you can read it back in the SAGE archives. This year we catch up with the dude about progress on the game, new additions and feelings on the current event…
TSS: Myst Hedgehog, it’s a pleasure to meet up with you again to have this cosy lil’ chat.
M: My pleasure really.
TSS: So, the last time we spoke – which was back about March 2002’s SAGE, you were showcasing Sonic: Eternal Rings. How did things go for the popularity of the game after the SAGE event, after I interviewed you?
M: Well, the game got some good comments, some bad comments, nothing too special. There’s also the fact that I didn’t release anything between that SAGE and this SAGE, apart from some buggy engine tests and some screenshots.
TSS: Sonic Eternal Rings in this year’s SAGE went a makeover in engine, didn’t it? How much of the game did you change since your last SAGE appearance?
M: Since last SAGE, Sonic Eternal Rings as changed a lot. And by a lot, I mean A LOT =P! There have been plot changes, sprite changes, gamplay changes, I went through several different engines… you get the point.
TSS: Explain a bit more about the engine. What was it about the old S:ER engine that you felt uncomfortable with? I thought it wasn’t too bad myself.
M: Well, I didn’t feel satisfied with the engine at the time, because I was constantly playing games whose engines were a lot better than mine. Also, the engine was made in TGF’s pre-built platform movement, and was too limited for what I had in mind for the game. Also, I heard at the time about this type of movement called static, which was apparently much more powerful than platform. And I wanted to check that personally =P
TSS: Cool. Anything that you can reveal about the story of the game? You say also that you have changed plot elements of the game, but does that mean you’ve completely rewritten the story too, or just parts?
M: Well, I just made the plot a little more complex. I really didn’t have a good excuse to include the Eternal Rings in the game at it’s early stages, and since I couldn’t find a better name for the game, I thought I’d better come up with an half-decent storyline. As for details on the story… Well, it’s kind of related with the story of S3&K, because it deals with the events after the fall of the Death Egg. And that’s all you get from me.
TSS: Heh, ok fair enough. While playing the game I noticed that there were unbreakable walls in the demo (I was playing it just now, BTW ;P). Does that mean there will be another character? Are those walls for Knuckles to break, or perhaps a new face? Or does it even contain unlockable secrets? We must know! ^_^
M: Hehe, I thought about explaining in a readme, but I was too lazy and thought it would be better if people found out all by themselves. Actually, you can break the walls in the demo. I’m going to give you a little tip. Next to the first wall of the level, there should be a spring. Use it to go to a platform a keep walking right from there until you find… you’ll see =P
TSS: Ahhhhh… sounds very interesting ;P You mention gameplay changes. Care to tell more about this aspect of the game? Or does it simply mean more baddies and better bosses and level design?
M: Well, it’s basicly what you pointed out, but I’m trying to include original features in every level, much like in S3&K, to add more variety to the game. This is basically your oldskool game. Oh, and there’s grinding too, don’t forget =P
TSS: Ah, I see. How well do you feel that S:ER is progressing? Do you see it being finished soon?
M: Well, I think the game is progressing really well. Some level layouts are already done, the engine just needs some fine-tuning. Not sure when it will be done, but maybe sometime next year. Only time will tell.
TSS: I’ll be waiting for that. Will there be any other characters playable other than Sonic in the final version? And how long will the game be roughly, in stages? Average Sonic game length?
M: Tails will be a playable character in the full game, maybe even in the next demo. I’d include Knuckles too, but I can’t fit him in the storyline so far, but we’ll see… as for stages, yes, it’ll be your avarage Sonic game length, with 7 zones and one hidden zone you can only access if you have the 7 Chaos Emeralds =P
TSS: Tasty. Finally, as we are coming to the close of the interview, what do you think of SAGE this year? Any favourite games on show that have caught your eye?
M: Oh yes, SAGE was much better this year than it has been in the past year. We really got some nice games like Sonic & Ice, Sonic XG (my favorite), and Sonic Slash. And of course there was Sonic Time Attacked. The concept for this year’s SAGE was interesting too, and mostly unexpected =P
TSS: Sonic XG was very good, as was STA. Any last words about your game you’d like to say before we depart?
M: Well, watch out for the game next SAGE, as there are some MAJOR changes taking place right now, and not involving just my game, but another TKgames game. And I’ll leave you at that =P
TSS: Myst Hedgehog, thanks an awful lot for sharing your time with us.
M: Hehe, no problem.

NEW- TSS Copycats Section
I’ve had a wake-up call this morning. Another website has decided to blatantly rip off my website in order to feed their own lack of imagination. You know what I say to that? Sod off! But no more 😛 These dumbarse webmasters are gonna be BLACKLISTED in the new TSS Copycats section. See a website that is blatantly copying TSS in one way or another? Tell Dreadknux with a link that works, and you’ll get an award! Who can say no to that? Let’s wash away all those copycat websites – TSS is the original #1!
Also, on another note, I got interviewed by new website The Sonic Shrine ^_^ It was very fun indeed. To read the inteview, Click Here. It’ll be added to Interviews section soon enough. 🙂
Finally, I’ve managed to get a new chat room for the site, after the original AIM Chat was constantly being abused. Find the link in the header (look for ‘Chat’ :P) to get there ^_^

A while back The Sonic Stadium was the first to announce Sonic’s appearance in Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg (oh, you know it), and there were some naysayers.
A day or so ago, we found Sonic Team’s updated Japanese website with more official details and screenshots of Sonic popping up as a hatchable animal.
Most recently, IGN managed to contact SEGA about whether it was all real or just a fake stunt (slow mo’s… :P), SEGA came back with a press statement confirming the incident, and some concret details about the hedgehog’s whereabouts…
Regarding Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg: Sonic the Hedgehog can be unlocked and used, considering the user has collected enough coins, in Dino Mountain 3 stage. Sonic is the most powerful egg animal to appear in Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. Once activated, he is capable of quickly defeating all nearby enemies. He also bounces off walls to change directions and attack new groups of enemies. Once found, users can activate him by pressing the Y button.
No doubt TSS will be tracking the progress of this game.

Sonic Guy, long standing member of the Sonic Stadium Message Boards, brought us to some interesting news that THQ has revealed the arrival of the third instalment of Sonic Advance. Delving deeper, we found this statement from an unknown source:
“THQ announces a copublishing agreement with Sega Europe for five upcoming GBA games, including the previously unannounced games Sonic Advance 3 and Shining Force.
THQ has today announced that it has entered into a Game Boy Advance copublishing agreement with Sega Europe. The deal will see THQ publishing a number of Sega GBA games in Europe, Australia, and other international territories starting this winter. The games confirmed for inclusion in the arrangement to date include the following:
Shining Force
Shining Soul II
Sonic Advance 3 – BOIT. See? 😛
Sonic Battle
Sonic Pinball Party
“Our two Sonic-branded releases, Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2, enjoyed sales of more than one million units at retail in North America according to NPD TRSTS,” said Tim Walsh, senior vice president of international publishing, THQ. “We are delighted that our relationship with Sega has expanded to our international territories.”
“We are looking forward to working together with THQ for the release of these quality games,” added Mike Sherlock, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Sega Europe. “Using THQ’s unparalleled know-how with the GBA platform will help us to reach our long-term goals in the shortest amount of time. This partnership not only helps us realize our commitment to expand our overseas presence, but also gives us the opportunity to further strengthen the Sega brand name in the international marketplace.”
While this is all freakishly good news, it’s odd seeing THQ announce these titles for Europe, whereas Infogrames has been doing the distribution in Europe for some time now. We all knew SEGA Europe was to become its own entity and thus detach from Infogrames, but then why go to THQ for publishing when they can do it themselves? It boggles the mind. o_O
And the fact that THQ has actually announced these titles on SEGA’s behalf seems strange too. Still, the announcements are all concrete enough, so not only do we get a new handheld Sonic experience on your Game Boy, we’ll also be getting either a continuation or a port from one of the best RPG series created – SHINING FORCE. Rumours of a port of the BEST RPG in existence, Shining Force II (no question – NO, don’t talk! No question about it!) heading for the Game Boy Advance may be realised with this announcement.
