Here’s a familiar sight. Nintendo has uploaded to their Play Nintendo YouTube page the first episode of a live-action series of videos about Mario and Sonic training for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The first episode is titled “Training for Rio!”, and it focuses on the 3DS version which released today in North America.
Why is this familiar? You may remember a very similar series of videos of the original game as seen below:
Certainly a bit different in tone from the original Beijing 2008 videos compared to now huh?
No news on how many episodes will be released, but I think it’s a safe assumption that we’ll see more videos later on and also focused on the Wii U version when it releases on June 24th in North America.
In Europe, the 3DS version releases on April 8th and for Wii U on June 24th also.
What do you think of this first episode of this new video series? Let us know in the comments!
Wow. Mario and Sonic are total douche bags to each other in the Beijing one. It made me laugh! 😀
I’m just as happy to see them as being friendlier with each other in modern day however. Also, what on earth kind of cheap Sonic costume did they use for Beijing? Sheesh. Was Sonic eating more chili-dogs than usual? 😮
I’m happy to see Mario and Sonic together in any official light, so I’m happy to see they are doing this. 🙂
My favorite of all time though has to be the final countdown commercial for Beijing. You can’t get more hype than Mario, Sonic, and a final countdown am I right? I love it.
I know right! It’s kind of sad seeing Sonic’s costume looking so poor compared to Mario. I’ve seen school mascots that have better quality.
At least the new one is much more accurate and high-quality.
Yeah. 😉
…Being friendlier is still a good thing after Lost World…?
I don’t know what you are implying.
I think he’s saying that it’s all Sonic Lost World’s fault for ruining the Wii U’s image I think.
That was probably the most cheesy video I’ve seen. It didn’t really make me want to buy the game. However the voice in the video would make a good Sonic voice.
Boooh! What a ripoff! These commercials are so tame and filled with shameless marketing, they have none of the character and comedy of the original Beijing commercials. It sucks this series has just becomes another way for SEGA to whore Sonic for cheap money, but as long as them and Nintendo keeps making that Olympic moolah, this thing won’t die.
You’d think we could’ve gotten a Paper Mario meets Paper Sonic e-shop exclusive mini-RPG if they’re gonna keep stretching this deal and making it lamer.
Aw, not as much hijinks as the previous ones. Well, hopefully that’ll change when we see more of them. Gotta say though, not a huge fan of this announcer guy, he sounds really nasally. Couldn’t they have gotten someone like the announcer from the actual games? Oh well, still can’t argue with how much better those costumes look now than they did in the old days. X)”
Man, I forgot how good those old commercials were (Sonic’s costume notwithstanding). Back when Mario and Sonic could still at least pretend to be rivals and the idea of a crossover was still novel. I wonder when they’ll finally come out with the crossover platformer everyone’s been anticipating since the first Olympics title?
There where also live action Ads for Mario & Sonic London 2012 in which Mario & Sonic where being shown around Buckingham Palace as well from my memory…
I remember that too. 🙂
GRIFFITH!!!
lol it wasn’t him but glad to see someone still remembers him.
I hope that we see more hijinx. Maybe Mario and Sonic start out all nice and good sports, but turn mischievous once they start playing the game more often?
Those Beijing commercials take me back man… I remember seeing those on the TV in 2008. In hindsight, that Sonic costume is really bad lol.
Awwww. I miss the Beijing commercials so much. I loved those.
That a fabulous trailer of M&S Rio 2016 today!
Remember kids! Rivalry is BAD! Just be best buddies! (insert obligatory hand job puns)
I miss the old days…
Why would you want to be rivals when you could be best friends? It’s better to build bridges not barriers.
that voice in the video sounds like a mix of Jaleel and Jason
Glad they were able to get a better Sonic costume in that 8 years that’s passed.
