SEGA Europe Gets Kids Running in Run Sonic Run Initiative

SEGA Europe has teamed up with local schools and communities in the UK and set up a fun run initiative called Run Sonic Run to get kids running. The first event was held on Sunday May 15th in Walpole Park, which supported the Ealings Schools Fun Run, and as you can see in the photos, Sonic, the blue blur himself attended the event to show his support. 10 schools took part including Mount Carmel, Hobbayne, The Grange, Fielding, St. Saviours, Montpelier, St. Johns, Christchurch, St. Gregoryโ€™s and Blair Peach. The event is reported to have been a great success and got over 500 children running. Adults even took part afterwards in a 5k run.

SEGA is hoping to bring this initiative to future events and says to keep an eye out for details, so we’ll do just that and bring them to you as they’re announced.

  1. What are the odds that this can come to Hull? And what are the odds that I can pass for a kid? Or will I have to run in the degrading ‘dads’ race? lol…. groan.

  2. This is pretty awesome! Id have to say, at this point sonic has to be the most well known gaming icon in the world. The amount of events and charity stuff sega sets up, the toys and merchendise, even mario doesnt have THIS much publicity. Sega is waaaay past awesome *nods*

    1. Probably not the MOST well-known gaming icon, maybe the most well-known speed icon besides The Flash.

  3. And all that Nintendo can do is have a pasta-eating contest and tell the kids to be fat.

  4. Great idea. Sonic is a great character for children, and his athletic attributes make him the perfect inspiration to get them motivated to keep fit. I think SEGA should take it a step further and launch a Sonic Kinect title in which players run in place to get Sonic going. Perhaps an SSR-style game… only tolerable.

Hopefully SEGA of America will try something like this. If any country needs their kids to lose a few pounds, it’s the US…

    1. thats how i become a fan of sonic , he inspired me to run alot and that really help me in football , im actually skinny. when i run, it reminds me of sonic. i first sonic game was sonic heroes. AHH the good old days

      1. Yeah, Sonic inspired me to run too! Now I’m the fastest person in my school! And everytime someone gets close to me in runs, I think of Sonic, and makes me go 2x faster! :)Gotta Go Faster Faster Faster Faster Faster!

        1. Sometimes when I run, I actually lean forward and hold my arms out behind me like how Sonic runs in the modern games. My friends think it’s awesome XD

          1. You’re not alone, my friend! Sonic’s “fly like a bird” running style may look silly to onlookers, but it makes you feel so much faster, doesn’t it??

    1. lol I was kind of thinking the same thing. That guy isn’t going to be running very far in that suit.

  5. Awesome! Using a legendary icon to motivate kids to get healthy, win win all around!
(I want that tarp in my bedroom)

  6. Wow, I’m glad I wasn’t the only who was motivated to try and run as fast as Sonic (I was young, and Sonic’s run cycles in SA and SA2 actually made running that fast seem possible)

Of course, I was also motivated to jump by Mario, too…

It’s nice to see these characters serve as benchmarks for the youngsters now, even if their feats are a little more… unrealistic.

  7. Funny… He never inspired me to run at all… Well… Maybe some… But mainly just to say catchy phrases and eat chili dog’s until I gained a good 20 pounds. I hated chili dog’s until I saw Sonic actually.

“It’s chili dog time!!” Om nom nom nom. Winner of the race get’s a lifetime supply! Bulk up kiddies!! XD

  8. Im suprised no kids are in a sonic t shirt. But 1 Kid is in a donky kong tee LOL

  9. Wow… looking through the comments makes me remember my college days running through downtown streets at full speed listening to Sonic tunes, while running like Sonic :D. My best time is running 2K from my university to the train station in 5 minutes, 30 seconds… Good times, goooood times ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. Oddly enough…Sonic just inspired me to try to help animals and do computer animations and draw. XD
I do not like running at all. I’d die if I run…^^’
