Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 is now out on mobile. The game is free to download but is basically an extended demo. At about a dozen events in, you will get to the paywall and need to purchase the game to get any further. So what are the options? Let’s take a look.

Purchase Screen #1: The Areas
Here, you can purchase either “all-access” (AKA the full game) currently on sale for $4.99, or you can dip your toes in the water and try areas 1 and 2 for $1.99, followed by arenas 3-7 for $3.99. Mind you, I’m 17 stages into area one right now and it’s still going, so these areas are large and give you a good chunk of the game.
Purchase Screen #2: The Boosters
These are TP boosters which I believe are sort of like XP boosters in console games. In other words, they can help you boost your levels to help make things easier. I think. To be honest, I haven’t played far enough into the game to find out. Booster packs include a level one booster pack at 99 cents, a level 2 TP and Spirit booster pack also at 99 cents, a level three TP and Spirit booster pack at $1.99, and finally, a Max level booster pack at $2.99.
Purchase Screen #3: Background Music
Now here is where it gets pricey. There are six BGM packs in all and each one is $1.99. each comes with four songs taken from different Sonic games, one title, and one badge. For $7.99, you can get all six packs, saving you about four dollars.
The tracks include Angel Island Zone (SSBB Remix), Sonic Boom, Palmtree Panic, Can You Feel The Sunshine, Open Your Heart, Live and Learn, Escape From the City, Seaside Hill, I am… All of Me, Sonic Speed Riders, His World (2006 E3 Version), A New Venture (Surfin’ S.R.A. Remix), Let the Speed Mend It, Rooftop Run, Knight of the Wind, Free, Starlight Carnival Act 2, Super Sonic Racing (Cash-Cash/Sunoe Remix), Windy Hill, Power Ride, Hi-Spec Robo Go!, Fist Bump, Sunset Heights, and Mother’s Canyon.
And that’s everything! If you were to purchase everything starting with the $4.99 area pack, you would be looking at $19.94 for the full experience. That’s just under $20. Not too bad considering many games will “nickel and dime” you into spending hundreds of dollars.
