Deleted Scene Featuring Old Design Baby Sonic Toddles onto YouTube

As we know, the Sonic Movie went through a whirlwind of changes during it’s development, so much that it had to be significantly delayed to fix Sonic’s design. While we all got a clean look at the old design of teenaged Sonic, we only ever got to see the “redesigned” version of Baby Sonic… until now. SEGA Launches 60th Anniversary Website

SEGA turns 60 this year, and the company has launched a new website to mark the occasion! Called “GO SEGA,” the website contains a summary of SEGA’s 60 year history, as well as a message from SEGA Group chairman Haruki Satomi. In the message (read here), Satomi talks about the company’s aspirations for the future, the meaning of “GO SEGA,” and promises special content throughout the anniversary.

What exactly that content is, we don’t know as of yet. The website’s “events” section is currently greyed out. In addition to the history lesson and Satomi’s message, the website will also be accepting 100 character messages from SEGA fans about their experiences with the company and its games. These messages will be accepted between April 21 and June 3, and will eventually be displayed on the website. 60 lucky people will even have a chance to win a special 60th anniversary handbag, pictured below:

What are you hoping for from SEGA during it’s 60th anniversary? Let us know in the comments!

IDW Delays Sonic Comics Indefinitely, Starting in May

With major cities and countries in shutdown due to the Coronavirus, many businesses are being forced to temporarily suspend their operations. This includes comic-book distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors. They will be suspending operations starting April 1st.

In a statement from IDW president Chris Ryall, IDW will suspend May releases and “reduce its overall publishing line for products originally scheduled through July, with a focus on releasing our biggest projects in special editions to help drive traffic to stores through the summer.”

What does this mean for the Sonic comics? A report from Tails Channel has helped clear things up.

  • Issues 29 and 30 are indefinitely delayed (Future issues likely to be delayed too.)
  • Issues 27-32 and the 2020 Annual are returnable within 60 days if already ordered
  • The issue with digital releases is unclear.

The good news is this doesn’t affect issue 27 which will be out Wednesday (if your local comic store is still open or allowing pickup). The 2020 Annual and issue 28 are still due for release in April.

Sonic Becomes Highest Grossing Video Game Movie in US, Makes $300 Million Worldwide

The Sonic movie broke another record last weekend, making $145 million and becoming the highest grossing video game movie in the United States. This just barely places it ahead of Detective Pikachu’s $144 million U.S. total.

In terms of overall box office, Sonic is still substantially behind Detective Pikachu. It passed $300 million last weekend, putting it well behind Detective Pikachu’s $433 million. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Sonic movie’s release dates in both China and Japan have been delayed, with a new release date still undecided. Detective Pikachu made over $120 million across these two regions last year.

With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic forcing millions to self-quarantine, and with the movie hitting digital on demand services at the end of the month, this will obviously be our last box office update for awhile. All things considered, not a bad run for a movie many thought would be a disaster last year!

Sonic 3 Returning…as a Tiger LCD Game

This article was guest-written by Sonic Talk co-host Chris Xenn.

Grab those rose-colored glasses, because Tiger Electronics is back! Yes, the overly simple, occasionally surreal handhelds you got because the man at the store said this was just as good have returned by way of the Hasbro nostalgia-mining machine, and Sonic’s along for the ride.

As reported by The Verge, Fall 2020 will bring the release of reproduction Tiger Electronics games “inspired” by four actual game handhelds, including The Little Mermaid, Transformers: Generation 2, X-Men Project X, and of course, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, each for $14.99.

For those of you too young to remember what not owning a Game Boy was like, Tiger Electronics handhelds were LCD-screen video games (like a calculator or watch) where the entire display was made of black “sprites” that could be cycled on and off, but never overlap or move. Developers needed to be rather creative to turn such simple technology into engaging, fun, and animated games that replicate the experience of other 90’s consoles and handhelds.

Scan from the original 1994 manual, from Sonic Retro

Unfortunately, the actual legacy of Tiger Electronics handhelds is that they were repetitive, shrill novelties. Sonic 3 is certainly among the more complex examples, taking Sonic through six “stages” of dodging badnicks, searching for Chaos Emeralds, and battling the combined efforts of Robotnik and Knuckles. However, if your interest is piqued, treat this as a collector’s novelty and not an actual game worth your time or money. Pre-orders are currently only available at Gamestop.
