SEGA’s Mega Drive Mini Will Include Either Sonic 1 or Sonic 2 – You Decide!

You may have heard in recent months that SEGA is working internally on a Mega Drive Mini console, after a partnership with AtGames for the project went sour. Now it sounds like we’re a little closer to the micro-console’s release, and SEGA is polling fans on which titles they’d like to see included. There’s a catch, though…

The plan, according to SEGA Japan’s official Twitter account, is to only include one game per series. That means, it’s unlikely that we will see the entire 16-Bit Sonic back catalogue on the system. Which is a huge bummer, but on the bright side, we do get some small control over which title that is.

At the moment, SEGA is asking which game to include from three classic series: Sonic the Hedgehog, Puyo Puyo and Shining Force. The options are below:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog OR Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Puyo Puyo OR Puyo Puyo Tsu
  • Shining Force I OR Shining Force II

If you were to ask us, we’d probably plump for Sonic 2 – we love the original Sonic game, but it’s available on pretty much everything but a toaster these days (and no doubt someone’s working to make that happen). Sonic 2 is also quite ubiquitous, but less so than its predecessor – plus it’s got Tails in it.

Vote for your favourite on SEGA Japan’s Twitter thread here, or on the Mega Drive Mini website.

  1. Sonic 2 is also the game that truly established the Classic formula, especially the Spin Dash, which helps define the gameplay so much it’s been ported into almost every remake of Sonic 1 since.

  2. ANOTHER mini megadrive?
Just give us a Saturn/ Dreamcast already, jeez. Good grief, how redundant.
    This is just lame.

But man, if these Genesis games create so many legal hoops to jump trough, then I can’t imagine what a legal labyrinth the Dreamcast/ Saturn games would be with all their licensed music and sponsors. Those getting a collection is never going to happen, is it? Just the same generic Megadrive games over and over and over and over and over. Pass.

  3. If I’m being real with myself here, Sonic 1 has never been much fun to play, since I grew up with Sonic 2. Sonic 2 was leaps and bounds better than 1, and playing 1 after playing 2 felt like laying on hardwood after laying in a bed.

  4. You sure Sonic 3 and Knuckles isn’t an option? I guess Sonic 2 because it has Tails, super transformation and the spin dash.

  5. Can’t have one without the other, but Sonic 2 is clearly the better game.

Rant: Sonic1+2 has been bundled so many times why do they feel the need to only include one now?

  6. I’d rather Sonic 3 & Knuckles than either, but ah well. I assume this means they already know it has to be Streets of Rage 2, right?

  7. If this came to America, it would have both choices, as this will be made by SEGA themselves, no AtGames, this time. Plus, we’re crafty enough to hack it like with the Nintendo Classics.
