Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers Board Game Announced

Start saving your pocket money, as board game purveyors Shinobi 7 LLC will soon be launching their Kickstarter campaign for their newest board game Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers! The product is advertised as a strategic board game designed for 2-5 players, in which each participant takes on the role of one of multiple Sonic the hedgehog characters represented by a set of fantastic, size-scaled figurines.

Shinobi 7 plan to launch their Kickstarter campaign this month, offering up exclusive and Limited-Edition items to those who pledge their support. A  retail edition of the game will be available later in the year through Diamond/Alliance.

The description of the game on the Shinobi7 site is as follows:

Burst into action with Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers! Select your racer, choose your route, and fight your way to the finish while avoiding opposing racers and a variety of dangerous obstacles. Control your speed, use your abilities, and activate your special powers to collect as many rings as you can in an amazing race.

Based on Sonic the Hedgehog, the world-wide phenomenon, Sonic the Hedgehog: Battle Racers allows you to take on the role of Sonic or one of his many friends and rivals in a strategic race through a variety of exciting locations. The course changes with every race, so no two games are alike!

Other information from the Shinobi7 site states:

  • The base set of the game comes complete with five figurines of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman, along with all neccesary parts to play the game
  • 3 “Boss packs”, themed around Infinite, Metal Sonic, and Shadow, include a new character figurine along with new playing tiles and parts to expand the game
  • 12 additional character expansion packs (Big, Blaze, Charmy, Cream, E-123 Omega, Espio, Jet, Rouge, Silver, Sticks, Vector, and Wave) will be available, with each character bringing new elements of gameplay to spice up the base set’s play

  1. Lovely figures, I want them!!…
At least 20 different figures, that’s the biggest SONIC collection by far!!…

  2. Whelp, there goes all of my money… Between this and the new TOMY Collectors’ Series line in 2018, I’m gonna be broke.

  3. I freaking need this, too bad Blaze is DLC but if the figurines look as good as in the pics I may end up buying them all if they’re not too expensive.

Also I’m glad they have been focusing more on the rest of the cast lately with no less than 20 characters for this game, I guess if we were to have a new Sonic fighting game in the future with 20 fighters they would pick the same characters.

  4. Wait a minute BIG? YES

Also, glad to see the Babylon Rogues haven’t been completely forgotten

  5. … You know what’s funny? I had an idea for a board game themed around Sonic YEARS ago. Though it was quite different to this one, it had similar ideas of racing to the end, using powers to mess with your opponents, and even semi-simple representations of Zone types. It was also more like Mario Party in a way, and you could collect the Chaos Emeralds to get to the final part of the board.

And this week, I was thinking of changing the idea up to include modular components to expand the size of the board, give more Zones, and add more player tokens. (Though how it would work, I hadn’t quite figured that one out.) I know it was only going to feature Classic Sonic as a start, with the original game as a base, with different levels of expansions, like character packs, Zone expansions, and even full on game expansions which included all the zones from a later game in the series(In this case, all of Sonic 2 16bit’s Zones), new characters, and parts to use with older zones to make it feel like a Sonic Mania zone in board game format. And the way I had envisioned the modular pieces to work looked nothing like this. I had envisioned it to be a bit more rounded with the pieces, or looking like patches of land, with some clear connections to particular zone types, or use of specialized warps to get between the zones. (Think like the Phantom Ruby style warps to get from Green Hill, which is located on South Island, to Metropolis Zone, which is on Westside Island, for an example.) Ah well, this looks like it has potential. We’ll have to see though.

  6. Damn, looks promising! Too bad i don’t have people alongside me to play FeelsBadMan (Also LUL, another game where Jet and Wave are in, but Storm is ignored)

  7. Kinda wonder why Shadow’s coming with Oil Ocean of all things, I would have chosen a more logical place like Radical Highway or Westopolis.

Also weird that Storm got left out of that extra character pool, but Sticks is being added. Hm.

  8. Cool Big, glad to see him again( I really mean it) . If they also added Chaos , Tikal , and Storm that would of been amazing as well.

    1. Fixed! They’ve changed the link end from “racers” to “racer” for some reason! Thanks for the spot.

    1. Checking dice roll….ooh Community Chest!

      Let’s see what it reads….

“You have been arrested for the crime of spiteful ignorance.”

“Go to jail. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT COLLECT $200”

      Ouch.

    2. Yup. Modern board games are great, thousands released every year. You’re probably thinking of stuff like Monopoly and Yahtzee – they’re terrible in comparison with modern fair, just like Atari games are terrible compared to modern video games.

  9. Makes me a little nervous they seem to have connections with Soda Pop Miniatures (maybe even are a branch of Soda Pop?)… Their games are always delayed even after massively exceeding funding goals.

The worst example is SDE Legends. That game is about a year and 3 months overdue now and there still isn’t even a date for shipping the thing =(

The company have been very aggressive with backers, ignored refund requests and for a very long period of time stopped communication altogether.

Before you back I’d do some research and check out:

  10. Really excited for this game though unfortunately Fang/Nack the Weasel isn’t among the announced characters, and he continues to be my favorite character despite not being used for awhile. (Aside from the clone in Mania of course!)
