Sound Test Saturday: Super Sonic Racing – Otamatone Deluxe Cover

Mere words cannot do justice to this cover by self-proclaimed “World’s Okayest Violinist and Master Otamatonist” Mklachu, but never in my life have I needed something so much and never known until I received it.

As a Sonic fan, chances are you have never gone without listening to the vocal stylings of TJ Davis, who lent her unforgettable voice to the Richard Jacques-composed soundtrack for the SEGA Saturn classic Sonic R. It is probably thanks to her you know every word to its eponymous theme tune “Super Sonic Racing,” which reappeared in games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic Generations, and even Sonic Pinball Party, be it the original wholesale, the instrumental track, or a remix of it.

Well, it turns out that the next natural step for “Super Sonic Racing” was for there to be an Otamatone cover. It didn’t have to exist and nobody asked for it to exist, but it does now and it is plain terrific, both in novelty and execution. Check out Mklachu’s cover above and do subscribe to her YouTube channel to keep up with more gems like these! Heck, why not go the extra mile and support her work on Patreon too?

If you ask me though, the fact that Sonic R has yet to see a digital rerelease on Steam and home consoles is downright criminal.

    1. I took one to the common room of the Elder music hall once. I even had composers offering to write otamatone quartets, or a concerto. I have yet to see any. 😛
Also it is highly unusual to actually see one of these played well.
