Also detailed is the Rio Beach, where you meet several characters and Mii characters from around the world. In here, you can access sports events and various game modes in a hub-like area. Seemingly you can challenge other players’ Mii characters in Olympics Tournaments. However, there is no online-play here.

As shown before in the overview trailer I reported about yesterday, the Wii U version features 400 pieces of gear and costumes that your Mii can unlock and wear, and the costumes power-up your Mii in various ways. Finally the website mentions the Heroes Showdown mode also described earlier where you choose between Team Mario and Team Sonic.

Also the game will be released in two packages in Japan; a standard box which will cost 6,156yen, and a bundle box which will include two Wiimotes; a red one, and a white one, which will retail at 8,316yen. You can view the high-res boxes of both above.

The website also provides many new screens and clips. The clips are combined into one video which you can see below:

And as for the screens, there are a lot, so I’ll only post a few below, but check out the link below for additional screens and small renders of the characters (most are recycled from earlier games).

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U will be released in Japan on June 23rd, 2016, and then the day after on June 24th, 2016 in NA and EU.

Via Nintendo’s Japanese website of the game, Perfectly Nintendo (for the translated info, and with more screens), and Amazon Japan (Standard package, and Bundle package).

  1. “Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Wii U will be released in Japan on June 23rd, 2016”
    Huh. Sonic’s Birthday.
Besides that, I’m going to have to agree that it is quite a let-down seeing characters exclusive to certain events. I know a lot of people will be upset that they can’t use Rosalina in the swimming events… … but that may be a good thing now that I think about it. But still, my hype for this game isn’t as high as it used to be due to some sizable flaws coming to light.

  2. Its weird, there are some characters missing from the list like Eggman Nega, Cream, Omega and Ludwig.

  3. Urgh… Really? Sticks is only playable in one event?

    Well, there goes my purchase…

    1. To be fair, she’s only in it to promote Sonic Boom Awareness. Don’t be surprised if she spouts off nonsense about aliens being behind this, or the fact that she used Eggman’s Dimensional Gateway from Worlds Unite.

  4. I’m still excited for the game. Even though there are less events than other installments, they seem to have upped the quality of those events. I’d rather see 14 events done great than a bunch of lame ones personally. As for the characters being limited, yeah it does kinda suck however you still have the returning roster in all events and that’s still quite a lot of characters. If you think about it is just like the olympics, teams usually have athleates who only compete in one event. Plus I’m sure the gameplay and modes will help back it up. So I’m still getting this game, it’s going to fun!

  5. Where’s Omega on this list?

I wasn’t going to buy it anyway but come on now.

  6. Rosalina is only avaliable for Rythmic Gymnastics? what – cant you handle a god partaking in the Olympics? we already have a robot (and i love him).
its good to see Metal Sonic is avaliable for everything – that was my worry. So… its still a purchase from me even though im sad about Rosalina and Sticks.

  7. I wish Nintendo and Sega could at least give us notice that they are working hard to make the newcomers playable in all events, but it will take longer to get it taken care of. They could eventually sell the characters for all events as a dlc pack, and they could offer a free download to those who own both copies of the game. That would be fair, The Wii U version already has better graphics, more life to it’s gameplay, and 25 characters to play as per event (1 newcomer included).

Some might say the 3ds version had more, but it really didn’t feel like much, since only 3 characters were playable in each event, while only about 6 other characters were playable in each event, which really limited your options, and the events in the game were overall shallow or boring, with a few good exceptions, like golf, and gymnastics.

The Wii U version may have less events, but they look more fleshed out, and seem to have more variety and setting for it’s gameplay. I’d rather have less events with more effort, instead of more events with little to offer.

Isn’t that the definition of an unfinished game?

  8. I’m so disappointed with seeing new characters being event exclusive. And most of them are exclusive to only one event! Come on!
    Anyways, I’ve lost my hype…

  9. I’m still exited about this game ,character limitation is a problem only when there is not much to choose from ,the 3ds Verizon we only have seven characters, while wii u has twenty two characters , and I’m at least happy the original 20 characters are restricted , now that being said I’m disappointed in the lack of events but it does seem the they are focusing a lot on the events we have so it may still be fun

  10. Never been interested in these sports games but I’m currently in Japan and gave the arcade version of this a go last night. I might actually have to make a purchase on the Wii U!
