Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition

Sega and Nintendo have finally opened the official Japanese site of the Arcade Edition of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and includes footage from a variety of events in the game.

So far as playable characters go, we just have the usual characters including Mario, Yoshi, Sonic, Knuckles, Bowser, Peach, Eggman, Amy, Luigi, Wario, Tails, Shadow, Bowser Jr., DK, Metal Sonic, and Vector. The site teases at least four more to be unveiled, but naturally they’re surely to be any of the other known characters in the 3DS versions’ 40 total.

Among the events showcased is the classic 100m, which you can see below, with more in the events page.

  2. It’s been years but I still can’t get over Sonic competing in running evens with other characters in these games.. or many of these other events for that matter.

    1. Totally agree. It’s like that scene from the Incredibles movie where Dash’s parents are telling him to go second place in the race to not make the others look bad.

    2. I think they should handle it similar to the way it was done in Sonic Boom, changing its position depending on the camera angle.

      In the more recent games when the cutscenes show a front view of Sonic talking it looks really, really awkward.

Oh my goodness holly Mario & Sonic At The Ryo 2016 Olympic Games for 3DS has 40 characters & the Arcade Edition version has like 16 characters wow it make sense because is a demo it’s like Nintendo & Sega like us to bring old Mario characters & old Sonic Characters! But some of the new popular Mario Character is Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy & new little weird Sonic character from Sonic Boom TV Show & games is Stick The Badger in MS 2016 I can’t wait for Mario & Sonic At The Ryo 2016 Olympic Games Wii U Version on June,2016 character rosters, like 50 characters in Wii U Version it will be amazing to have it like comparing to Super Smash Bros For Wii U & 3DS to realize about it.

  4. I’m pretty sure those four characters are blaze ,waluigi ,silver,and daisy.because if you look in the trailer they are there but not in the characters menu. They might be locked or not ready yet

    1. And I’ll bet that in the next update, the arcade version will be adding four more from time to time. Because I see Nabbit, Omega, Rouge, and TOAD. It will probably have to do with that Aime card thing, and the reason why capitalize Toad’s name is because he is not in the 3DS version. Maybe the WiiU version will have more than 40 characters.

You’re probably right but if you look closely at the gameplay video on the 400m relay ,you can spot the toads running in place for the other human players ,since all the human players are working together, so I’m guessing they might be support characters that participate in events ,but you could also be right we’ll have to wait and see

        1. Yeah, and the 3DS version don’t have all of the kooplings and the zeti. Also Storm, Big, Dixie, and Charmy are the only members from their own group that aren’t in the 3DS version along with Toadette, and Kamek.

  5. Am I the only one dissappointed that they still have the middle mouth on Sonic? They fixed that in Smash 4 so why not here? It just doesn’t look good for Sonic. Heck, even Sonic Dash doesn’t have that problem.

    1. Really? I find the mouth in the middle to BE the fix as a refreshing break from seeing it awkwardly on only one side in 3D. I mean, luckily it looks okay in him as I think both options do as long as they don’t make it look weird, but I prefer the middle mouth.

      I wasn’t quite sure why all the older or more serious characters ha dto have the goofy mouths but cutesy or silly characters like Tails, Amy, Cream, Big, Charmy all have it in the middle like normal. Lol

      1. Nah the side mouth looks the best and it stays true to the classic era as well. The middle mouth looks like a muppet in my opinion. It’s dumb how they use the side mouth for the cover of this game but not in the actual game.

  7. You know, I don’t think they understand the meaning of “secret” when said secret characters are in the trailer and screenshots for the game. Like, even in just material solely advertising the Arcade version they’re shown off.
