Naoto Oshima designs guest characters in Terra Battle, someone looks familiar

Wait a minute, you’re not Sonic, this is impossible!

Well that looks like Sonic because those characters above were designed by Naoto Oshima, known as the original character designer of Sonic, Eggman, and others from Sonic 1, all the way to his departure from Sega to form Artoon (and its successor Arzest where he now resides) in 1999 after Sonic Adventure was released.

This is for a game called Terra Battle, which is by Mistwalker for mobile devices, created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy. Arzest even contributed to the game earlier, credited for “Illustration and graphic design for monsters, scenery, etc”. Oshima contributed these guest character designs for a Daily Quest in the game as shown, which will start its rotation next Friday.

What I can’t help but wonder, is why these look so similar to Yuji Uekawa’s artwork, especially in the original Sonic Adventure. What do you folks think about this?

  1. Sonic: “I found you, Faker!”-SA2
Shadow: “What’s with that Hedgehog that looks like my twin?”-Sonic Heroes
Amy: “Your Crazy if you think you can escape from Amy Rose!”-Sonic Unleashed (And just about every other game appearance where there is another Hedgehog character!)

  2. “Well that’s because Naoto Oshima, known as the original character designer of Sonic, Eggman, and others from Sonic 1, all the way to his departure from Sega to form Artoon (and its successor Arzest where he now resides) after Sonic Adventure was released.” This sentence look weird to anyone else? Looks like it’s unfinished.

    1. Hmm, you may be right, let me fix that. 🙂

Edit: There, that should be better now. Thanks!

  3. lol, I thought this was a kickstarter for a Sonic look-alike game in the same style as what Inafune and Igarashi and the Yookie-Laylee team are doing reviving their franchises.

Dammit, I was gonna throw money too, lol.

    1. Isn’t the indie kickstarter franchise revival equivalent of Sonic basically what Freedom Planet turned into?

Besides, SEGA is way too anal to let Oshima top them at their own game. Sure they let a thousand Sonic fan games with pirated assets roam the Internet but the minute one of them starts outdoing their games, it’s a one way ticket to a death sentence.

R.I.P Streets of Rage Remake. Never forget.

    1. The name of the quest associated with the character is “Hedgehog Hullabaloo”, so I’m guessing he’s a hedgehog. Can’t find a name for you though, I don’t think it’s been released yet. Sorry about that.

      1. Aw, it’s cool. It’d be pretty neat to see this guy in an actual Sonic game, honestly.

        1. Reminds me of a grey version of that purple Tazmanian Devil dude from the Archie comics (pre-reboot) who hated all echidnas, his name escapes me even though I really liked him…

  4. I wondered the same thing. It’s weird enough that it’s Naoto Oshima designing the guy but in the art style of the person who redesigned Sonic? All the characters have that style. I guess it could be coincidence as some 2D Mario artwork and other games share a similar style on occasion… except that blue monkey kid dude looks pretty Sonicy himself. o.0

  5. 2 things tho.

If Shadow doesn’t look like Sonic this guy doesn’t! lol

Secondly, this dude looks way more like Mickey Mouse than Sonic does. Look at his face!
