Thanks to the eagle eyes of our friends over at Sonic Paradise, we have two more screenshots and an hi-resolution logo from the upcoming HD port of Sonic Adventure 2 headed to the PlayStation Store (PS3) and Xbox Live Marketplace later this year. The screenshots give us a glimpse of Tails in Mission Street and Knuckles in Death Chamber. SEGA has also issued a press release which, along with the screens, you can view after the jump.

A surprise emerges from the shadows

Press Release 16th July, 2012

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO— 16th Jul, 2012 — In a totally unexpected, surprise announcement at the 2012 Sonic Boom community fan-fest during San Diego Comic-Con, SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. have officially announced the upcoming HD remake of legendary Dreamcast title Sonic Adventure 2™ for PlayStation®Network and Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

The game that first introduced the world to Sonic’s darker counterpart, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Adventure 2 has players exploring two unique storylines from the perspectives of both long time heroes and new and returning villains in a battle for the fate of the world. First released in 2001 and hailed as one of the last great Dreamcast releases, this unmissable Sonic story will feature high-definition graphics, leaderboards, achievement/trophy support, and more when it hits consoles later this year.

    1. SEGA are poking fun at their own inability to keep things secret in the press release like they did in the announcement trailer.

      1. *SEGA is poking fun at its own inability….

When you talk about companies, it’s always “is”, never “are”. Since it’s “is”, you have to replace “their” with “its” since SEGA is singular. 😛

          1. No problem 😛 and sorry, I don’t usually like correcting people, it’s not my thing lol. I just felt like I had to get my reply out there. However, you were up late, and I definitely know how it feels like when you try and use your brain at early hours (3 am D:) in the morning haha.

        1. Actually, you’re half right. When referring to companies, it’s a plural in the US language and singular in the UK one. Mind you, this is a British website, so… 🙂

          1. Since when were companies referred to as plural in the US? I’ve never heard of that, and I thought that the 2 instances on this site were either mistakes or some new quirk of the UK language I was unaware of.

        2. You actually took the time out of your day just to correct his grammar.

          I hope you feel accomplished.

      2. Actually, SEGA planned for this to get leaked. They released the SA2 avatars. Don’t underestimate their brilliant military grade top secret policy. They successfully kept “Sonic Generations” a surprise. Any leak regarding SEGA is usually intentional.

        1. “They successfully kept ‘Sonic Generations’ a surprise.”
Not really… we knew there would be a Sonic Anniversary game as early as late 2010.

          1. @Dreadknux – Hmmm, I’ve never heard of that. I’ve always been taught in school (in the US (Ca)) that companies are singular. 😛 I’ve never heard of companies being plural in the US lol.

@Reny – Well, I’m still on Summer vacation, and I mostly stay at home. I don’t really have stuff to do, so why not? Anyway, like I said before, correcting people for small mistakes on the internet is not my thing. 🙂 I’m just really bored, that’s all.

@Meta Ryan – Actually, SEGA DID keep Generations a surprise. Sonic Anniversary was similar to Generations, but not completely. The Anniversary rumor said that it will be just Sonic, and that there will be past levels from Sonic 1 – SA2. The rumor did not say that there will be a Sonic from the past, or that the levels ranged from Sonic 1 – Sonic Colors. SEGA totally surprised ALL of us when SEGA released the Generations teaser trailer. 😛 So, yes, Sonic Generations was a complete surprise!

    1. Don’t believe what Sega says. They need something to use as a selling point. I’m not gonna believe anything until I see it for myself.

  1. So it’s Sonic Adventure 2 – but I’m guessing it’ll have elements of Battle in it, which improved some problems.

    1. Yeah it kinda does, tho it will be running at 720p i imagine. Achievements sound good, but is that enough to tempt me back to the first mainstream Sonic game that disappointed me, and introduced *shudders* Shadow, the first of the two horrible hedgehog clones >.<

  2. It looks like it has a slightly higher resolution and the graphics are upscaled, however this is comparing my experience with null dc which makes the graphics look kinda bad, however even comparing this port to hd videos of the gamecube port I can say the graphics are upscaled.

    1. Ps sonicplayer is no more, now when I comment i will be Chaos the Destroyer. Youtube channel is irrelevant right now, so unless you want to watch my favorite vidoes ignore the link in my name.

  3. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST – SEGA, DO EXACTLY WHAT SONIC GENERATIONS DIDN’T!

ADD BATTLES EXACTLY LIKE THE ONES FROM SA2B BUT WITH IT BEING ONLINE!

I WANT TO LITERALLY BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF SOME DUMB PUMPKIN-HEADED CHAO WITH MY ANGEL CHAO!

    1. Online 2P mode? If they did it for Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and 3, then they should DEFINITELY do it with SA2. I wanna kick some butt with my Chaos Chao >:D

    1. There are indeed plans for a Steam port. SEGA is continuing its ongoing transition and brand re-origination. Be patient.

      1. No, what I mean by that is in SA1, the radar could find 2 or 3 at once, but SA2’s radar only set off one at a time and you had to find the others by luck.

  4. So with along with their “unexpected” announcements, they’re probably going to reveal the PC version later…I hope…

    1. i’d count on it, besides, the PC has received some love as of late with the series, plus only SA1 being there makes no sense

      1. I hope SA2 will also come out for the eShop on Wii U.

It’d be perfect – The Wii U launches – it has the eShop and downloadable games – including SA2! That would be amazing, and many people would buy it!

To me, my 360 is dead. For next Gen, I’m only buying a Wii U, that’s it. I do not see why SEGA would not put SA2 HD on Wii U. SEGA would be silly not to do it.

        1. In fact is probable that Sega decides not release the game in the eshop and prefer to wait for Nintendo to launch the Virtual Console service first and then release it there.

But just being able to play it on the controller screen would leave me satisfied.

        1. We have been given SA2 before. Adding online would actually be a reason to revisit the game.
I say add: Online race battles with tails and knuckles as optional racers besides just sonic, shadow, amy, and metal sonic. Add leaderboards to the chao races and karate. Finally add a ranking system so that if you are a good racer or good care giver for your chao, people you meet online will know about it. /end/best idea that will never happen proposal.

  5. All right; it’s widescreen. I’ll give them that.

But it’s quite clearly a port of the GameCube version, probably sans the Battle stuff, it’s not rendering in true 720p and the “high-resolution logo” is available as a vector image anyway.

Oh, and no PC version. That’s really quite disgraceful.

    1. I thought it said “avaliable for pc download” too on the trailer.. humm.

    2. Eh, I think the’ll include the stuff from Battle but obviously not put “Battle” in the name. It did bring some improvements.

…Hopefully I’m remembering what “sans” means correctly XD

  6. I’m REALLY REALLY hoping this is getting a port to PS VITA, I would never stop playing it if it did.

  7. Haha, silly me – I assumed ‘HD remake’ meant the Ocarina of Time 3D kind… C’mon Sega, if not the character models then at least the textures! ^.^

    1. Too expensive for a download only title, that would only be the case if it was retail.

  8. Good Lord! I already beaten the game on the DC and GC and I had no objections. Sega saying that this is a HD port and the current shots show a gamecube edition with some slightly smoother graphics isn’t saying much. Sega after this game Make a HD port of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles or something.

  9. So, SEGA, when do we get TRUE HD remakes of the Adventure titles? I want to play them with Generations graphics. Now, maybe not the Generations/Unleashed model, but with the graphics at the same quality and detail. COME ON SEGA, JUST MAKE A COMBO DISK WITH THESE TWO THINGS ON IT

  10. People are whining about a port not being new enough. DAMMIT PEOPLE ITS JUST A PORT! For years you been begging Sega for a port, now that they do that, you’re still whining?! That’s sad.

  11. I hope that this gets online support for multiplayer! I loved the multiplayer in SA2, and it would be sweet to see it online.
