ESRB Rates Sonic Generations 3DS, Boss Hint and Online User-Generated Content?

The ESRB has rated the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations and has given a possible hint as to what one of the game’s currently unknown bosses may be. When referring to bosses in its rating description, the US ratings board gives an example that sounds like the Death Egg Zone boss from Mega Drive title Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a boss that is also present in the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. This could also be the already revealed Big Arm boss from Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Launch Base Zone, though. The game description also hints at user-generated content among the game’s online features

You can read the full rating description below.

Sonic Generations

Platform: Nintendo 3DS

Rating: Everyone

Content descriptors: Mild Cartoon Violence

Rating summary: This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of Sonic the Hedgehog as he attempts to stop a mysterious force from altering his universe’s timeline. As players zoom across fantastical landscapes, they collect gold rings and power-ups while using spin attacks to knock over enemies (e.g., insect and animal-like robots); enemies disappear amid smoke puffs, and Sonic blinks and loses rings when hit. A handful of boss-battles depict close-up spin attacks and brief explosions (e.g., defeating a giant robot by crashing into its torso).

Online Notice: Includes online features that may expose players to unrated user-generated content (Nintendo 3DS)

  1. I do wish they release the 3ds around the time the console generations come out, I do recall you guys saying it was a advertisement killing? I just hope the 3ds version is good or somebodia gonna getta mad.

    1. Advertisement killing? What do you mean? So far all signs point to the 3DS version releasing later in November. I recently reported that Eurogamer Italy had apparently received confirmation from SEGA that it comes out November 25th in Europe, which is the same date EU retailers have it down for. SEGA are still just saying November on their website, though.

I hope the 3DS version will be good too.

  2. Well, it’s not the Death Egg Zone boss, as the original in Sonic 2 required you to attack him from behind. If it is that boss, it would be the watered down, electric death trap that the Sonic 4 final boss is.

    1. What? I never had to be behind to beat that boss in Sonic 2. Hm. Did I break the game or something?

    2. Actually it was possible but it was mostly meant to be defeated by hitting him in the stomache. There’s a part where you hit him from behind in the console version of Sonic Generations tho.

In Sonic 4 idk if that’s the same robot. It’s similar. (Then again the one in Generations merely has a similar design as well. Heck he’s litterally twice the size of the one in the original Sonic 2)

How can the one in Sonic 4 be watered down AND a death trap? I know people like to hate on Sonic 4, but despite having rings, I think the one in Sonic 4 was actually more difficult. (And for the gameplay Sonic 4 had, including the homing attack that is, I think Sonic 4’s version was actually better. lol But it dragged on forever.)

  3. Either it is custom content, or it’s just usernames people chose for themselves. They don’t tend to be appropriate sometimes. ^^;

But it sounds more like Big Arm than anything else, to be honest… Oh well, I’ll try not to be a Debbie Downer on that one.

    1. Whenever I see a mention of Debbie Downer, I think of Horatio Sanz wiping tears from his eyes with pancakes.

  4. Yeah it sound more like Big Arm. Oh boy that means that whatever is on the 3DS now is basically final. Maybe they have time to change small things but the levels and bosses are set in stone. Crossing my finger for 8 stages with one being an advance stage.

  5. So we now know about 2 bossess on the 3DS version. We’ve got to hear more about the other bosses soon.

    1. what do you mean? we’ve known about Big Arm since the 3DS version has been revealed. I seriously doubt that we are going to fight the Death Egg Robot.

  6. This is not related to the article, but I just want to say that I love how TSS has been managing lately. Those forum contests where we submit comments is hellafun, and It really makes me happy to come here. It would be really awsome if you guys did even more stuff like that besides news, such as mailbags, community articles, opinion articles, and reviews.

    1. Thanks for the feedback and kind comment. Yeah, we do need to get back into the community stuff. As for opinion stuff, I’m personally not a good enough writer for that. I need to improve my grammar skills for a start XD Dreadknux already does reviews of new Sonic games after they’re released and T-Bird does community-joined CD reviews every now and then after their release. I guess we could do some retro reviews.

As for mailbags, what do you have in mind?

      1. I for one think your writing’s improved immeasurably in the last year, Dale.

rulerofyourface, thanks for the vote of confidence! We have recognised recently that we’ve been focusing on news a bit too much, so we’re working out how to get more variety in there right now.

  7. I hope thwey are talking about the Sonic 3&K Boss, though its highly unlikely. I can still have hope though 😉

    1. you mean big arm? they have to I mean they’ve been adversting it way to much to pull it out for another boss this late in the game. And I hope they don’t change it cuz Big Arm is one of my favorite bosses and the music rocks as well.

      1. I meant Death Egg Robo(the silver robot that tried to steal the master emerald.) I hope that’s the one they are talking about. Oh and don’t worry, they won’t take out Big Arm. 🙂

  8. User generated content? Custom made levels? That would seriously make the ENTIRE game much more worthwhile

  9. Custom-Made Levels??

If so, this is a must buy, don’t give a shhit about what anyone else says

  10. The irony of this is… Me and my friend were just talking last night about how they should have a level editor, or some form of user-generated content for this game. Next day, you have this tidbit to share. I really hope we can make levels for this, something that they should of added in the console version too, but oh well.

  11. if the level editor is true, i can recreate the console version on the 3DS and save some money 😛
lol JK, i would recreate Green Hill, though.

  12. LOL When I think of Debbie Downer I think of South Park…
But anyway I want a list of 3DS levels!

    1. sure:
      Classic Era
      Green Hill
      Casino Night
      Mushroom Hill
      Rival: Metal Sonic
      Boss: Big Arm

      Dreamcast Era
      Emerald Coast
      Radical Highway
      Rival: Shadow
      Boss: ???

      Modern Era
      ???
      ???
      Tropical Resort
      Rival: ??? (Probably Blaze)
      Boss: ???

        1. Shadow was seen when the first Radical Highway Scans came in. As for Tropical Resort, right now it’s just a guess based on what songs were played during the TGS Presentation.

  13. Well, it’s food for thought, but hardly news, in my opinion. And not much food either, in the end, the robot is probably Big Arm or perhaps the Doomsday boss or something. And user-generated content is always something they warn “is not rated by ESRB” (or whatever your region’s rating system is there) so we already know about online gameplay, this is probably a warning against people with offensive usernames. There is no level creator, guys.

  14. the only thing I’m not liking about 3DS Sonic is the Homing Attack added to Classic Sonic. If it has a chance of getting fixed, i hope it does. I’m really excited to see how they turn the 3-d stages into 2-d with some awesome 3ds twists and 2.5d areas! That’s going to be my favourite part. i also can’t wait for the special stages, i’ve always loved those

I’m more excited for the console release, but the 3ds version looks so colorful 🙂

  15. Let’s see what bosses fit that description.

Sonic 2’s Death Egg Zone boss: You hit him from behind or in the stomache.

Sonic 3’s Big Arms boss: You hit him in the cockpit between the arms.

Sonic & Knuckles’ Sandopolis boss: You strike the Golem-bot’s chest twice.

Sonic & Knuckles’ Death Egg Boss: When chased, you hit his chest where the Master Emerald is.

Technically there are some more except I don’t know what all other games are involved in order to list those other bosses.

  16. The 3DS version probably uses the Mii for the leader board. That is probably the user generated content they are talking about.
