Sonic Team at Tokyo Game Show 2011 – Jun, Generations and Jubilation

SEGA celebrated the end of the Tokyo Game Show in style last night, as Sonic Team director Takashi Iizuka wished Sonic the Hedgehog a happy 20th Anniversary and Jun Senoue took to the stage to perform a selection of songs with Tomoya Ohtani.

After a live performance of themes from Sonic Colours’ Tropical Resort and Sonic Adventure’s Emerald Coast, things kicked into Generational overdrive as a Modern mix of Chemical Plant Zone rocked out against a new video of gameplay from the upcoming Anniversary game. New footage of Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run was shown too.

The pair were later joined by Cash Cash frontman Jean Paul Makhlouf who sang vocals to City Escape, It Doesn’t Matter, Reach for the Stars and more. You can find the rest of the performance in the second half of the video, below. It’s a bit choppy as it appears to have been recorded from SEGA’s UStream site, but the sentiment is there and that’s all that counts, right?

Thanks to ‘WizzleKidd’ for the heads up.

  1. Interestingly, when talking about his setlist, Jun posted on Twitter “1. Tropical Resort 2. Emerald Coast …to promote pre-order freebies”… WHAT COULD IT MEAN?!?!

    1. It’s probably something to do with the two different Sonic Generations OSTs that are going to be sold in Japan. They did show off the album covers during the performance of Emerald Coast, so that would be my educated guess.

      1. Yeah, but it does make me wonder… if Tropical Resort is on one of the OSTs, it would mean that it’s in the game? Assumably the 3DS version? ZONE CONFIRMED.

Also, is there any news on being able to buy the soundtracks without the game attached? It’s going to be expensive, otherwise. And I’ve already accidentally paid £35 for th Sonic 1+2 soundtrack.

        1. I’m not sure they tied Tropical Resort to the OSTs and pre-order bonus, just Emerald Coast. I do believe the two OSTs will be sold separately – and paying £35 for Masato Nakamura’s music is no accident. 😉

          1. Accordind to Jun’s Twitter those aren’t the real soundtracks just a give away for Japan, he said he’s also working on the real Generations Soundtrack at the moment.

    1. I’m a big fan of ‘It Doesn’t Matter’, but he just ruined it, big time.
*goes to wash out ears by the original version*

    1. Yeah, we established at Cash Cash’s first Sonic-related show in November last year that their “signature” Autotune style was by necessity.

      1. What is Autotune, exactly? :/

…And uh, who makes up the band Crush 40? I’ve always wondered this. I know a lot about Sonic, but the band behind the music is still largely a mystery to me.

        1. Autotune is the technique used by sound producers to alter voice tonations and such to make people sound like they can sing properly even though they can´t.

e.g. Justin Bieber, Jean Paul Makhlouf

          1. Oh, so Justine Bieber doesn’t actually sound like he got kicked in the nuts in real life? Hmm…(No I’m not a fan, if my response was any indication).

I can see why they altered it. He killed Reach for the Stars and Endless Possibilities (although he didn’t sing the latter for Unleashed…But still) T^T Thank god he didn’t sing Live and Learn…

  2. Off Topic Spoilers

I just noticed =O there are 6 Bosses (Not counting Time Eater), 2 of which are Classics. If things keep going as they are, and both Sonics don’t truly share the same bosses, then that means Classic Sonic is only getting 2 boss fights =O

But, even if we are getting 2, Sonic Team made the perfect selection for getting Giant Egg Robo and Metal Sonic.

    1. More spoily spoilers, but I’m fairly certain one of the people who deconstructed the demo said that the Bosses were even, with Modern Sonic fighting Perfect Chaos, Shadow, and Egg Dragoon, and Classic Sonic fighting Metal Sonic, Death Egg Robo, and Silver.

      1. That’d make no sense though because Classic never met Silver =/

It’d be better if Classic battled Shadow or Perfect Chaos but I doubt the Shadow thing because they already have a epic rival race (Metal Sonic) so it’s probably gonna go like this…

Classic Sonic: Metal Sonic, Death Egg Robo, Perfect Chaos (Platforming over destroyed buildings and flooded rooms, reference to Hydrocity and Angel Island – On Fire)

Modern Sonic: Shadow, Silver, Perfect Chaos (3D boosting over water, falling buildings, and grinding, reference to Aquarium Park and Metal Harbor)

          1. @Nuzumaki90 – Look at it this way. Was the Sonic 06 Silver battle fun? No. So what makes you think it’ll be more fun re-created? If Sonic did battle Silver, then how will Sonic use his boost, if he’s in a circle area? And the fact that Sonic in Generations is NOT meant to run in cirlce areas….Sonic’s gameplay in Generations is meant to just keep going foward. It would make more sense for Classic Sonic to battle him. Think of all the possibilities the Silver Boss Battle can be in 2D!

            Also, maybe during a cutscene:

            1. Sonic and Classic Sonic seperate, and Classic Sonic runs into Silver. Then Silver will say “I’ve been looking for you. Your the Iblis Trigger. Your actions will condemn us all” Then Classic Sonic just stands there, and makes Silver mad, and then they battle eachother.

2.Sonic and Silver are walking together, and then they see Silver pop out of nowhere. Silver says “I’ve been looking for you, your the-….wait there’s two? However, that dark blue hedgehog(Mephiles) showed me which one it was! Wait, but then who’s that little blue one? Then Sonic says “Oh that’s-” Then Silver says” TINY IBLIS TRIGGER! Man, i could deal with one Iblis Trigger, but TWO?! That’s out of control! That’s it, i’ll deal with YOU(Classic Sonic) FIRST!” Then the battle starts. Then Classic Sonic kicks his ass(or whatever happens) and Sonic starts explaining.

        1. Silver’s arena is too small for Modern Sonic, and it wouldn’t match the gameplay of Generations, so I agree with you about Silver fighting Classic Sonic. But how will the gameplay for the Egg Dragoon fight play out? Will the Werehog appear again?

          1. I think Silver’s boss fight will go like this….

Sonic is boosting through Soleanna, while Silver is using telekinesis to drop a bunch of crap onto Sonic and every once in a while he picks up Sonic and throws him to the back of the arena “It’s no use! Take this!”

The only other kind of battle I can think of is both him and Sonic jumping over rooftops doing cutscene combos or something.

Egg Dragoon is probably a Classic Boss after looking at it a few times. Classic Sonic is gonna have to use his speedy platforming to take him down, I can’t think of any way Modern Sonic will fit into the battle.

        2. By that logic, Classic Sonic wouldn’t make sense in City Escape and every other level related to Modern Sonic.

        3. I think it’s going to go like this:
Classic Sonic: Metal Sonic, Death Egg Robo, Perfect Chaos, Egg Dragoon
Modern Sonic: Shadow, Perfect Chaos, Egg Dragoon, Silver (The events in Sonic 2006 never happened, so wouldn’t that mean that Sonic Team can mess around with the fight as they please? Like Modern fighting Silver in Crisis City’s super speed section or something).

    2. (Spoiler) Yeah but think about this.

      Classic:
      1-Metal Sonic
      2-Giant Mech

      Adventure:
      1-Perfect Chaos
      2-Shadow

      Modern:
      1-Silver
      2-Egg Dragoon

I think it was suggested that Classic Sonic may fight Silver despite that never happening just for gameplay mechanic purposes. But they never said for sure which I found odd.

      1. I still think it will be Shadow, Silver, and Perfect Chaos for Modern while Metal Sonic, Giant Mech, and Egg Dragoon for Classic.

The Egg Dragoon boss fight can be like the 2D fight with Egg Devil Ray or the Starlight Carnival Fleet thing

        1. Look at it this way. Was the Sonic 06 Silver battle fun? No. So what makes you think it’ll be more fun re-created? If Sonic did battle Silver, then how will Sonic use his boost, if he’s in a circle area? 3. What a wonderful performance. I’m loving the new Rooftop Run. Sounds wonderful, especially the piano intro and quite nice despite the more piano and violin instead of guitar. Same goes for Seaside Hill and Chemical Plant.

  4. Jean did very well on Escape from the City, but he started messing up the lyrics on the other 3 tracks.

The new footage for generations looks awesome too. I kinda lol’d at Seaside Hill when I saw that loop that splits into 3 parallel paths (since Sonic isn’t teaming up w/Tails & Knuckles like he did in Heroes).

  5. Seaside Hill is starting to look a lot like it’s counterpart: Ocean Palace.

ALSO, that wasn’t too bad. I really thought the singer for cash cash was better, boy was I wrong.

  6. Ricardo has a point.BUT,Classicsonic has never met Silver. And who knows they could recreate the highspeed section in Crisis City in Hd but with Silver picking up cars and you side stepping out of the way and every now and then, `Its No Use!` and he used his Heart Of Wind power up from Sonic 06 to dash at you

  7. I’m curious to see what the Modern and Classic mixes of Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run will be in-game.

Anyways, Emerald Coast sounded pretty good, but alot of the songs here sounded way too soft.

    1. Also, I cracked up at 3:54 on part 2. “This song’s called It Doesn’t Matter………Endless Possibilities.” xD

  8. My my, Escape to the city was horrid. Jean had a huge problem with the rainbow line. I love the seaside hill mix and chemical plant. Tropical Resort is fun like always

  9. 1. Mute the video
    2. Play your own favorite themes
    3. ????
    4. Watch the gameplay with problems
Although all my money for Chemical Plant, I guess my ipod will have a new most played.

  10. don’t blame JP for sucking… the mix is awful… if you place any dry vocal awkwardly on top of any mix without any reverb… it will sound out of tune.. your hearing every imperfection.. guitar is barely heard in the mix as well.. and bass is too loud. give him a break. hes not great obviuosly. but i have heard worse

    1. Listen to him trying to hit the high notes in Reach for the Stars (his own song)… no amount of bad mixing can cover that up.

  11. Lol dont start getting on the Silver boss. You do know hes going to be in Crisis City. Modern Sonic could be in a recreated fully functional HD HighSpeed section of Crisis City while Silver is throwing Cars,Spikeballs,Boxes and at some point he says ”Its No Use!” And starts using Heart Of Wind To dash at you Lol. Thats what i call a Modern Boss. A Classic Boss would be something like Silver is in the Background using his Ground Shocking Powers to catch you and then he appears in 2D and starts throwing telekinetic blasts at you

  12. This is one of those rare occasions where:
    I can sing better
and there is a little overkill on the bass. XP

  13. Huh, SEGA do seem to like their Makhlouf bros a lot recently… Even though they only did music work on one game. Lee doesn’t get as much love as that, and he did vocal work on two of them!

    And… Hmm. =\ I can’t sing, but I’m pretty sure I would’ve been better than this. And I don’t have a very big range at all…

    1. I think Bentley Jones now officially has bad blood with SEGA. So I don’t think we’ll see him on a Sonic game any time soon.

        1. SEGA put some of his stuff (including a remix he didn’t like) on a compilation CD without getting his approval or giving him any royalties. As far as I know, the issue was left unresolved.

        2. SEGA put some of his stuff (including a remix he didn’t like) on a compilation CD without getting his approval or giving him any royalties. As far as I know, the issue was left unresolved.

  14. He just ruined what was a master piece of escape from the city and the other songs… Where in the world is jonny for things like this?

  15. The comment section: “lol I can sing better than that”; “that singer sucked”

Sure JP was sorta off, but at least we got freaking Seaside Hill and Rooftop Run’s music!

  16. from all of the songs that were played here, we have 2 unusual ones:
    -Tropical Resort
    -Emerald Coast
i think we all know what this means 😉

    1. they played those while annoucing the history of the first stage. hench it could be the songs that are of the first stage in each game. 🙂

  17. Rooftop Run was already on my 25 most played on iTunes, but if that mix comes out, it will defs be number 1 within a week. Oh and JP of Cash Cash, stick to auto tune 🙂

  18. Jun was awesome as ever, but what the hell Jean Paul? He was offkey left on right. The bad mic didn’t help, but I can see why he uses autotune so gratuitously.

  19. we can all agree that the vocals sound horrible and hes not a good singer…. but it may have sounded good if you were there. the vocals are so loud its awkward… nothing to back him up!!! it sounds like the super bowl…. usually very bad. i would def say CASH CASH should stick to the remixes though. City escape and Big Arms sound AMAZING!!

  20. Wow, the bass was WAY too loud, and it sounded kind of awful. Then when they said Jun was playing bass, my view of him playing live shattered – how can it be THIS awful live?

I’m not trying to be negative, I love Jun’s music and the music of Sonic in general, but how could it come out sounding this bad?

  21. *Gapes in horror*
Makhlouf just stabbed repeatedly in the face the best Sonic song (with vocals) of all time, Escape from the City.
*Goes and listens to the classic remix*
I feel much better now, but Makhlouf?
NEVER SING THAT SONG (or any other song) EVER AGAIN WITHOUT VOCODING OR BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. VERY BAD THINGS.

  22. it was Terrible…

He forgot the name “Endless possibilities” to “it doesn’t matter”..
HE Sound Horrible! He doesn’t know how to sing..
the guitar is all Random Sucks..
And that part when he Misspelled “Endless possibilities”…
How did SEGA payed for these guys…

  23. I liked Jean-Paul and I still like it, he doesn’t sing bad, but it seems that the microphone was very bad, and without autotune…

  24. I have to admit those song notes are hard to hit. But hey he gave it a nice try.
Awesome to see Jun and another familiar face from long past. Curious how many alternate tracks we might get to hear

  25. You know, i’m sure Cash Cash wasn’t that- *gets up to “speed of sound”*- HOLY CRAP MAKE IT END! I planned to respectfully say he did an ok job, considering i’ve never judged music too harshley based on the musician itself, but THAT WAS AWFUL. I WILL NEVER UNHEAR THAT!

  26. When I first heard Seaside Hill would be in this I was unhappy… After seeing this though I’m excited… It’s the best looking level I’ve seen so far and is well crafted… I still REALLY wish Tropical Resort was in this!!!! That would’ve been epic!!

Just imagine Tropical Resort being fully fleshed-out for exploration and in HD… Nothing would beat that. Not even Planet Wisp.
