UK Sonic the Hedgehog Chess Collection Magazine Cancelled

A few months ago Hachette Partworks Ltd. announced the production of a fortnightly Sonic the Hedgehog Chess Set Collection, in which fans could subscribe to a magazine in order to receive their chess set piece-by-piece over the course of several months. This stirred several fans into a frenzy, with promise of individually tailored pawns in the form of eight different chao and classic badniks. However, no launch date was given, and fans subscribing to the magazine earlier this year have grown increasingly frustrated with no news, confirmation of their subscription or delivery date being announced.

SSMB forum member Stiv has been one of the first to receive a letter of apology this week stating the reason for delay: the magazine will not be making it into mass production. Quoting from Stiv’s letter:

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we have had to cease publication of Sonic the Hedgehog Chess Set Collection.
As we are unable to complete the series at this time, we would like to apologise by enclosing a LED keyring free of charge.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

No doubt many fans will be disappointed and frustrated to hear this news. However with the huge array of Sonic the Hedgehog 20th Anniversary merchandise being released over the course of the next few months, some fans may be relieved that they will now have a little money in their pockets.

  1. ? that would have been cool. LED keyring? Seriously? Eh.

Just give me more Sonic Generations.

    First post*shot* 😉

    1. Lol, I wouldn’t expect any Generations news until E3…..I’m wondering if SEGA is even going to show more news at E3. Maybe all we will be getting is just Green Hill Zone.

If we do only get GHZ, either SEGA’s trying their best to SLOWLY reveal information, or their aren’t going to be many stages in the game.

  2. Chao and Badnik Chess pieces? That would’ve been SO cool! Too bad it got cancelled. I’m just wondering why it took them this long to announce that it was cancelled :/

      1. Actually being a UK company releasing a UK magazine it is spelt correctly. Just slightly different in the US 🙂

  3. I subscribed for my little boys birthday present. He was keen to get the bag, clock and other freebies as well as the figures. I ignored the overall cost as it really doesnt matter when I saw how excited he was. Ill give him the crap torch and tell him we can spend more at sos11. The customer service at the publishers is as rude and crap as it gets.

    Page.

  4. So… assuming one piece per issue, we have £7 per issue for 32 chess pieces, £2 for the first one… 31*7 + 2 = £219 for the whole chess set. BARGAIN.

I will shed no tears over this.

  5. I subscribed, I never recieved a welcome letter.

I never recieved a reply back to any of my emails to their customer service.

I never recieved any information from them regarding my subscription.

Then today I got a scrumpled up letter telling me it was cancelled.

However, the good news is that I finally have a subscription number… so… yay? Oh and an LED keyring… yay?
