Takashi Iizuka Comments on Sonic and Nintendo 3DS

In the previous issue of Nintendo Power, various game developers opinions on Nintendo 3DS were gathered and among them was Takashi Iizuka, producer at Sonic Team.

Takashi Izuka – Producer, Sonic Team:

“At Sonic Team, we’re already studying the Nintendo 3DS. We’re very interested in the platform. We think the depth of 3D could really help the sense of speed, especially when you’re playing Sonic from behind-the-back perspective.”

Fans may recall a document that hit the net, confirming SEGA’s planned Super Monkey Ball and Sonic the Hedgehog titles for the handheld, but SEGA has yet to announce or show anything officially. Iizuka’s comment is only based on concepts, but would you like a handheld Sonic game with a “behind-the-back perspective” like Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colours? Discuss in the comments.

  1. Well I haven’t seen it before, Nintendo Power isn’t released in the UK and the source (GoNintendo) has only posted it today(well yesterday now it’s after midnight).

  2. Behind the back? As in like all of his other 3D games?
Well, I’m looking forward to seeing what other future Sonic games Sega have planned for the console.

  3. I would, It would also be cool to make a hd remake of Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, with possibly new voice clips.

  4. I think Chronicles 2 would be cool in 3D.

As for a “behind the back game”… yeah, I think it could definitely work. Or at least have bonus stages like that.

  5. no, not more sonic chronicles… not unless they actually make it fun this time. That game was way average. But a full 3D Sonic game? Maybe. I remember the 3D Tech Demo they first had of Sonic on the DS waaay back before Sonic Rush was announced – Sonic was running down a path in full 3D getting faster and faster. That was cool

  6. Sonic Rush 3D?

Get it? Beacuse its the third installment…And its going to be in 3D. 🙂

  7. I don’t think it would work if it played like Sonic Colors and Unleashed. I’d rather have the controls in the style of the Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox and PS2 games while using the graphical style of Adventure 2.

Of course, while we’re on the subject of the style of Unleashed and Colors, is it just me, or does anyone else find how big the character models are strange? I just think it feels so weird having the characters that big when compared to the past 3D games and their models were small.

  8. Huh, so the Handheld series goes probably also 3D.
Interesting, and I agree with him on the sense of speed thing.
Imagine you run through a jungle and you blaze past trees and stuff that come direct towards you through the 3D effect.

  9. Why are people saying Sonic Rush 3 about this when Sonic Rush was side scrolling, not behind-the-back? Seriously, the article itself says “Like Unleashed or Colors”, or like 06, Heroes, Shadow, SA2 and SA1. Not like Sonic Rush. God, can’t you get over comparing Sonic games with Sonic Rush, people?

  10. @Shade Vortex

I was joking. I didn’t want to cause anything

Anyway in reality, I could see a behind the back game, but it really needs to be coded like Sonic Heroes and such. Because Sonic Heroes had the level design of a 2D game, but put the camera behind Sonic’s back. Which is extremely genius obviously, they need to add some sort of 3-D effect (like different loops to take and 2 different paths at an intersection)

Like, if you watch game play of Seaside Hill or any other stage, you can see where the effects I’m talking about are. If Sega could take that design logic and make it playable with a good camera, we would be in business.

  11. I think it could work. The 3DS is more advanced than the previous DS handhelds after all. And let us not forgot those behind-the-back moments in the Rush series. Those worked out pretty good.

  12. A sonic adventure HD remake is definitely possible and awesome sauce..i wanna see something along the lines of colours and unleashed..the wii versions of course..

  13. I’d rather have a new 2D Rush with Blaze.

Although if Blaze is in, even if it’s 3D, I’m happy. But 2D would be the best.

I think Handhelds should be getting 2D games and stationary consoles 3D.

  14. for f#ck sake has sega forgotten about the other handheld console does the word PSP RING ANY BELLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. @ccproject72: Sonic Rivals.

Anyway, I’m not sure about a proper 3D Sonic title, but I’ll give it a shot, especially if Blaze is involved in some way.

  16. If they go with a behind-the-back perspective, I think it would be cool if they had grass and debris jump out of the screen at you when Sonic’s running at top speed.

  17. I definetly want another game like Sonic Unleashed! My favourite would definetly be a Sonic Heroes 2! The origial is just epic! I got it about 5 years ago and I’M STILL PLAYING ON IT REGULARY! I think that it will work really well! Also I heard that you can watch 3D movies on the 3DS, how about making a Sonic movie for it or a new series of Sonic X?

  18. The fact that he’s talking about “behind-the-back perspective” makes me think they could easily port Sonic Colours to 3DS at some point.

  19. Well, Nintendo is remaking OOT for 3DS, so maybe Sega could remake the Adventure games with graphical updates, and better animation and voice acting. I think that would be a lot cooler than just a port. As for new games, I don’t think Rush has to be just in 2-D, so maybe they could make a 3-D Rush game. After all, Unleashed proved that mechanics from Rush like the boost could work well in three dimensions.
