Sonic and Mario’s Awkward Reunion

Sonic and Mario’s Awkward Reunion

CollegeHumor’s newest video game short centers around Mario and Sonic meeting up at a restaurant, but not in the way that you’d think.  Sonic is the waiter and a conversation ensues about the hedgehog’s mediocre-to-terrible track record since the fall of the Dreamcast.  Sometimes, the truth hurts… and is hilarious.

  1. Well in Sonic’s defense I argue that the Mario fanbase don’t know what they’ve got, because they’ve never had to suffer any justified disappointment in the character they love. Let ’em point and laugh at us but at the end of the day we’re still the better, more passionate fans. 🙂

  2. ^ Agreed, I can’t imagine Mario fans ever submitting “concept art” to get infomation about a much anticipated game.

  3. Sonic’s fans are significantly more passionate than any other fan base I know of in the video game world. Even with Sonic’s recent lackluster entries, his fans are still far more supportive than Mario’s will ever be. Ironically, it may be the “depression” of great games that has made us such a tight-knit group.

  4. slightly funny I guess. Still I dunno why Mario hadn’t heard of Sonic Rush. It was a big thing. I still love all the games though. Especially Black Knight at the moment!

  5. I’m surprised they didn’t bring up the M&S at the Olympic games or winter games in the video still it was really funny I’d love to see more Sonic vids like the Mario vids on College humor.

  6. That was a pretty hilarious video, but as people are saying the Sonic fanbase is probably the strongest gaming fanbase out there…I’m proud to be a part of it. 😀

  7. That’s some lulz of the highest order there people ^_^ ! Also stop comparing fanbases, it sound a LITTLE butthurty.

Dont jinx it. Remember what happened with sonic unleashed and SBK. We jinxed those and look what happened, we got speed in return for hub worlds and a sword and slowing down O-e I STILL LIKED EM. God I hate wen ppl say those games sucked. pfft ANYWAT MOVING ON, mario fans dont have art rolling in, tons of websites AND taunts, and eventually around 2020 someone is gonna end up hanging there shoes and hat, *steals charemys hat* Once and for all. xD

~Not only do we want Nights as a DLC but Omochao as well~

  9. Just watched it. Can’t say I’m that impressed. They could’ve done a better job. Besides, Sonic’s problem these days isn’t publicity, it’s general dislike of the games. A more legitimate angle would’ve been Mario as a Steven Spielberg equivalent and Sonic as a George Lucas equivalent.

  10. The thing about Mario is that Nintendo puts him in EVERY game they make that’s not Zelda or Metroid. People talk about how whored out Sonic is, yet they ignore the fact that Mario goes out and races cars, plays tennis, soccer, baseball, basketball, golf, magical board games with mini games thrown in, etc. All Sonic gets are his adventure games and platformers, with the occasional spin-off like Sonic Riders thrown into the mix. SEGA has other series that handle tennis, racing, etc., so Sonic doesn’t get the credit for solid games like Virtua Tennis that Mario does for his tennis spin-offs. Mario’s presence in EVERY Nintendo sports game probably has a lot to do with his popularity.

Of course, nostalgia goes a long way as well. Sonic was living large until the Dreamcast caved in, and since then he’s fared much worse on other consoles. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was almost 100% an improvement over the Dreamcast version, yet it scored about 2 points lower than the original version. It’s odd, but I think there’s something to this. If Nintendo were the third-party company, I think we’d be seeing the same thing happening to Mario.

Personally, I think Mario’s pretty lame. I enjoyed Super Mario Sunshine quite a bit, but once I beat Bowser, I didn’t feel a need to go back and complete the game. Super Mario 64 is a horrendous train wreck, and the fact that it continues to get so much love from critics only further supports my nostalgia theory. I haven’t played Galaxy, admittedly, but it looks like the last two 3D Mario games. Only without that nozzle thing from Sunshine, which I actually liked.

  11. I found this mightily hilarious! College Humour riff on most games rather fairly. They’ve given Nintendo their fair share of virtual noogies.

  12. @Brianzilla

I was with you until you called Mario 64 a horrendous train wreck.

Also, have you ever played Mario 3? I’ll be a Sonic fan till the dying end, but Mario 3 is pretty handily the best platforming game ever made.

  13. Sonic may have the strongest fanbase but….
there are still a bit few flaws in it.
    Know what i mean?

At least it is better than Mario…
