ASR To Get Characters And Tracks As DLC?

A polish car enthusiast website called Gry V10.pl has posted a preview (if you can call it that) for Sonic & SEGA All Stars Racing, dated 14th January 2010. In the preview they go into detail listing all of the features of the game that have recently been announced but then they get to a subject we aren’t as clued up on as they appear to be, which is downloadable content.

Up until now we’ve seen Xbox.com’s product page list DLC as a feature, but not what form/s it will arrive in, then yesterday we found out retailer GAME’s Spanish website are listing a pre-order bonus for a code to download a Ryo character. Now this car enthusiast website claims SEGA will be releasing characters AND tracks as DLC.

Here is a Google translation of the article/preview –

  1. Cool! Notice how it hasn’t said anything about DLC being exclusively on 360? Just that it will happen in the future. I hope for sure all the systems get DLC. Even the DS. I can imagine it being possible, since its a cart, not a disc. Right?(though I am unfamiliar with any DS game with DLC)

Only the DSi and DSi XL can do DLC but only really small files like the Wii so if this game get’s DLC like characters and tracks it will be just for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions.

  3. Nah, not like the Wii. There is a world of difference between DSi and Wii. Wii can handle DLC quite easily. It’s just apparently more difficult to implement, I think. I mean, has anyone seen some of the games on the WiiWare service? Some of them look better then a lot of retail games.

Oh, I’m not completely sure on the whole situation. I’ve mostly heard the Wii only does small files but I have heard of the difficulty problem too. I’ve seen loads of people posting round the net “Why don’t they just make DLC go straight to a high capacity SD card?” but I’ve seen dev’s say it’s not that simple.

  5. @Shadzter: lol To be honost, I remembered that the DSi would be the only one possible, if it could, I just didn’t know if I could double post. 😛

And you’re right, it might be hard for it to work with the SD Card. The SD Card works more like a “data storage” compartment. When you have to much memory, you move stuff to there. So I guess it all depends on how much memory the tracks/characters might be. And what if the characters for DLC are already picked and in the game, and basically what you’re getting is an “unlock key”, just like most DLC?

  6. Wouldn’t it be normal to have future characters and tracks for download like on every other game on the 360 / PS3?
If the Wii version offers the extras, you’d have to pay to unlock them rather than download them I reckon (Samba de Amigo style). Maybe Nintendo will step up their major console online service with the next Wii?
I don’t think they’d put the effort into offering anything extra on the DS version

Not every game on Xbox 360/PS3/PC get’s DLC. Up until now we only knew DLC is on the way because Microsoft listed it on the game’s product page at Xbox.com and in the Xbox Live Marketplace. SEGA and Sumo Digital the actual companies behind the game have still said nothing on the subject and because of that we dont know what form this DLC might be coming as wether it be characters only, tracks only, both or something else.

Agreed that an unlock key file would be logical for the Wii version or they could just do small music files to play in-game.

  8. Just guessing since Sonic Unleashed got all sorts of download packs.. but I guess keeping some of the game a secret is a good thing 🙂
Btw, you’re on fire this week Shadzter 😀

  9. Well. I’ve possessed both Wii and Xbox 360. Now I’m not sure which version will I get. With the downloadable content and all that.

  10. @Mighty the Armadillo: What if Nintendo develops their own ‘TT DS Card’ esque cartridges for specific games which only allow the user to read special DLC files? Micro SD Cards can be as large as 8GB right? Don’t know how it would work though…

  11. I hope they will release a demo for this on Xbox Live, so I can at least try it. Cus I’m going to buy it later this year.

  12. DLC for this game would be great as character have the potential of delivering lots of fanservice while new tracks can extend the game’s life.
