Sonic being hacked into other games isn’t exactly a novelty, let alone a Mario title; but this particular mod goes far above and beyond what you’d expect for the premise.
Super Mario 64, in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 25 years, was one of the most important video games ever released; it laid down the blueprint for how many successful 3D platformers would function. Sonic, on the other hand, unsurprisingly went in a slightly different direction and continued to push speed as a selling point in his big 3D debut on the Dreamcast.
But if you were wondering what Sonic would have been like in a more Nintendo-ish situation, look no further than this mod. While you’d expect this hack to just be a simple model swap with a higher top speed, you might be surprised to find out that a huge amount of love and care went into translating Sonic’s traditional moveset and behaviors into this N64 classic.
Sonic doesn’t just go faster than Mario, he can utilize his spin jump, spindash, homing attack, slide and rolling attack, complete with true-to-form spinball physics! That’s not all: getting hit makes Sonic drop coins (there’s no rings in this build) like you’d expect, Mario’s cap power-ups are replaced with sneaker-themed power-ups, Sonic will sink underwater (they also add in the dreaded drowning music) and… there’s just a lot. It’s easier to watch the demo video to get an idea for all the changes made to the game.
It’s not quite finished, but it’s the closest you’ll ever see to Sonic running laps around Mario’s world in such detail! Check the link to Thodd’s YouTube video which contains all the info you’ll need to give this a spin for yourself.
