Wait, huh?
I am about to give you strict facts on something I know nothing about and do not fundamentally understand. Today, the official Sonic Twitter announced an upcoming virtual music performance by Steve Aoki, notably taking place on Nov. 30, Aoki’s birthday.
Wikipedia describes Aoki as “an American DJ, record producer, music programmer, record executive, and heir to his father Rocky Aoki’s fortune from the Benihana restaurant franchise.”
The official Sonic YouTube channel also put out a behind-the-scenes preview video of Aoki talking about his love of Sonic, waving his hands while at a green screen DJ booth, and using the phrase “metaverse.”
Feel free to give informed context on who Steve Aoki is in the comments. Except for the NFT thing. We don’t need to get into an argument about the NFT thing.
It’s over, I skimmed the replay, and I’m still confused. The only Sonic music in there was a brief mix that included the Stardust Speedway theme. Other than that it was just unrelated EDM tracks with a few Sonic sound effects thrown in here and there – all while Aoki mostly just waved his hands in the air in front of Sonic-themed backgrounds powered by way-too-obvious green screen. Really not sure why Sega OK’d this.
I don’t think I even heard of Steve Aoki until now.
Either way that Sonic “concert” of his was really boring…😑
Steve aoki just ruined his reputation with the sonic community lol. Honestly though I had no idea who Steve aoki is and now that I do, his music sound as generic as any other dj.
