Replay The Classics That Started It All In “Sonic Origins” [UPDATED]

The Sonic Central broadcast confirmed the rumored collection of the Sonic collection of games. It is called Sonic Origins, and it is going to be releasing next year.

The collection includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Apparently, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD is in widescreen, suggesting that they may be the Taxman versions.

As for platforms, they only said that they are coming to “the latest” ones. They also said that more information is coming soon, so you will really want to stay tuned.

UPDATE: The Sonic Social Media Manager just confirmed that Sonic 3 & Knuckles will also be widescreen!

  1. Can’t help but wonder. Are these gonna be the only games, or will there be additional titles in there that they haven’t announced yet? Because it would be a great way to re-release Knuckles Chaotix at long last, along with bringing other titles to Switch and PS5 like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

  2. Sonic Origins? Oh boy, that looks good and it features Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD, although Sonic 3K is actually a straight emulation rather than a Taxman port for some reason. Here’s the Sonic 3K Taxman Proof Concept on YouTube which was uploaded on YouTube on 18th October 2014 by Christian Whitehead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct1cErthI6s

Sonic Origins is coming out next year in 2022 and what are your thoughts about it?

    1. Oh man Sonic AGAIN? If you don’t have these games already then buy this, for everyone else….. Next….
Sega have pumped these out on about every console I’m sure I have sonic on Gameboy advance in the attic,

    2. Actually Christian Whitehead completed Sonic 3 & K when he showed off the proof of concept. He was only able to show off Angel Island Zone as part of his NDA. So yes we are getting Sonic 3 & K on the Retro Engine.

  3. Sonic 1, 2 and CD seem to all be based on the remasters, would have been nice to see S3&K get the same treatment. Oh well.

  4. A bit bare-bones, but could be interesting. The fact that they are all in widescreen suggests that this is more than simple emulation, but at the same time it is possible that is the only enhancement present. For this to be worth my money we need to see not only all potential lock-on features from the original Genesis cartridge releases, but some of the other bells and whistles from others such as Sonic Jam’s difficulty options, Sega Ages’s drop dash and Mega Play versions, and of course the mobile Christian Whitehead ports inclusions of restored Sonic 2 Hidden Palace and Sonic 3’s elemental shields in other games.

Widescreen is incredibly important, but if they want me to buy these games again in 2021 they need a lot more than just that. Or reveal there’s actually another bonus game or 2 in there like Chaotix or the Master System games also getting an update.

  5. While I’m glad that Sonic 3 & Knuckles is also getting widescreen release, it makes you wonder what kind of changes are about to be expected since this is same Sonic 3 with those issues regards to Michael Jackson’s music composistion. Also it hasn’t been stated whatever this is specifically version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles created by Christian Whitehead or someone else at Sega (M2 prehaps?)

    1. Tee Lopes worked on remixes from the beta build of Sonic 3, yes the same music from the Sonic 3 & Knuckles Collection on PC back in the day.

  6. Personally I’m hoping they will do one with the games from the 2000s ak Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and Sonic Heroes

  7. This is some of the best stuff to come from the announcement, honestly. I can’t wait for an OFFICIAL Sonic 3&K in widescreen!

  8. This is extremely disappointing. Games that are already extremely easy to get. Why not Knuckles Chaotix, ALL the Arcade games from Waku Waku Patrol Car, Sega Sonic to Fighters. Mega Play Sonic 1 and 2.
How about the Sonic Cafe and other rare mobile games? Come on Sega, make a real collection here worth buying.

    1. SegaSonic would be very difficult to do as it uses a trackball to move the characters, so translating trackball to control stick is a pain in the ass. It would be better if Arcade1Up would handle that. The Mega Play/Tech of Sonic 1 is on the Nintendo Switch, sadly Sonic 2 on the Switch failed to incorporate this feature.

    2. Except people have been wanting console ports of 1 and 2’s remasters for 8 years. Yes, they are easy to get: only on mobile, but if you wanted a console experience, the closest you’d get is the Apple TV/Amazon Fire release.

Origins’ existence is warranted and well needed in this case.

  9. I’m just wondering what state the S3&K will be in. There are some sources that say the pusic will be the same as the proto/pc, but others say that SEGA has made an agreement with the Jackson estate. Maybe the option will be toggleable, maybe one of the sources are incorrect, we’ll never know until the next information reveal.

    1. S3&K will be using the retro engine just like 1, 2 and CD. The music will be the proto/pc, cause Sega didn’t succeed in making the agreement with the Jackson estate, 2 years ago (back in 2018) there was a change in guard for the Jackson estate and Sega tried to renegotiate with the new person in control of the Jackson estate and failed. So there will be no toggle option to switch between the 2 sound tracks like CD had and we are stuck with the proto/pc music. I know that the majority of the fans will not like this fact, so most likely everyone is going to mod Mania (if they haven’t done so already) to have all the S3&K levels (since the game already have Angel Island, Flying Battery, Hydro City and Lava Reef/Hidden Palace) incorporated with their respective music.
