Game Gear Micro Full Details: Sonic Games, Colours, Bundles, Pricing and More!

Fresh details have been revealed on SEGA’s teeny tiny handheld remake, the Game Gear Micro – including four versions of the “micro”-console each sporting a different colour, and the inclusion of two Sonic the Hedgehog GG games within a couple of the models.

As you can see above, the Game Gear Micro will come in four different colours and variations. Each model will cost around ¥4,980 each (which is about £36.35 or $45.73 USD at current exchange rate) and will include four games. The specific games you get packed within the device will depend on which colour you pick. Here is the full lineup:

• Black: Sonic the Hedgehog, Puyo Puyo Tsu, OutRun, Royal Stone

• Blue: Sonic & Tails (aka Sonic Chaos), Gunstar Heroes, Sylvan Tale, Baku Baku Animal

• Yellow: Shining Force Gaiden, Shining Force Gaiden II, Shining Force Gaiden Final Conflict, Nazo Puyo

• Red: Megami Taisen Gaiden: Last Bible, Megami Taisen Gaiden: Last Bible Special, The GG Shinobi, Columns

Of all of the games, only the first Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic & Tails make the cut (no Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Triple Trouble or spinoffs such as Sonic Drift or Tails Adventure, sadly) and if you want to get them together you’re going to need to cough up the dough for both the Black and Blue models of Game Gear Micro.

Good news for those of you concerned about the build and emulation quality though. SEGA announced that the hardware team behind the Mega Drive Mini were brought back together to work on the Game Gear Micro. And emulation ninjas M2 are behind the software development once again, so you can expect a pixel-perfect experience here. Some examples of the UI in action can be seen above.

Hilariously, it sounds like SEGA is more than aware of the issues you might have actually seeing what’s going on while playing the Game Gear Micro – so it has also developed a Micro version of the ‘Big Window’ peripheral, which magnifies the screen to a degree that may (or may not) be more comfortable.

As well as being able to buy the Game Gear Micro one by one, a number of online stores will be carrying exclusive additional merchandise or bundles. Amazon Japan will be selling the two limited edition t-shirts (shown above); the coloured Game Gear Micro shirt will cost ¥3,500 (£25.56 / $32.14) and the black and white ‘Hello’ shirt will cost ¥3,200 (£23.37 / $29.38).

At Rakuten, a much more alluring offer. If you’re keen on buying all four Game Gear Micro devices, you can grab this special box set which looks exactly like an original Japanese Game Gear hardware package from the 1990s. Inside, you’ll find a commemorative box that houses all four GG Micros, as well as box art of all 16 games as pin badges. This bumper box will set you back a whopping ¥29,980 (£218.94 / $275.28). You also get a Big Window Micro for your trouble, though.

Finally, SEGA’s very own ‘SEGA Store’ on Ebten.jp has its own exclusive bundle set. But this is perhaps only for the most refined and sophisticated SEGA and Game Gear fan. This package gets you all four coloured GG Micros, as well as an extremely limited edition fifth Micro. This model is Smoke coloured, and is for display purposes only – it doesn’t include any games and doesn’t turn on. With all five Micros, you can use the included framed case to display with pride on your mantelpiece, in your hallway or… in your safe if you prefer. This will cost ¥28,512 (£208.20 / $261.76) and comes with a Big Window Micro, too.

So there you have it. The Game Gear Micro will formally go on sale Tuesday 6th October, but you should be able to pre-order most of this in a few days, if not right now. Best get that mail forwarding service set up, eh?
