Evan Stanley takes over the Sonic comic while Ian Flynn pens “Bad Guys”

While the Sonic comic may be on hiatus due to the Coronavirus, plans for future issues are still going full steam ahead. As reported on comicbook.com, Sonic artist, Even Stanley will take over as both writer and illustrator of IDW’s Sonic The Hedgehog comic book as of issue 33. The story will take place just after the “Metal Virus” arc ends and will be a more lighthearted tale called “Chao Races and Badnik Bases.”

But that doesn’t mean long time writer Ian Flynn is out of work. He’ll be writing a new, mini-series titled “Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys“. As you can tell by the title, the story will focus on the villains. Mainly the ones from the comic book itself including Dr. Starline along with Rough and Tumble. Ian also mentioned on Twitter that he’ll back on the book in 2021 “for a bit”. So fans of Ian’s writing don’t have to worry that this is a changing of the guard, but more like letting others play in the sandbox.

    1. In our own world different than Sonic’s World our own metal virus thing is COVID-19.

  1. Hopefully “Bad Guys” will shed light on Starline’s past, I been curious about that for awhile.

  2. But it is doubtful that Evan Stanley will approve with Sega to revive Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and Rotor. I bet by the time COVID-19 subsides/flattens and bends the curve we could see some to most comic shops reopen, Diamond get back in business, and maybe IDW (if it stays in business – but without TMNT and G.I. Joe possibly) stays in business, we might see a catch up on the issues and maybe the first issue of the Sonic Bad Guys miniseries sometime in Fall 2020.

    1. Infinite isn’t allowed in IDW Sonic.

Also: Has there been speculation with the troubles of IDW in business that Udon may acquire with Sega the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book rights?

      1. “…that Udon may acquire with Sega the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book rights?”

Thats the first I heard of this, any idea where this comes from?

        1. Basically, Udon said that they were interested to get the Sonic comics before IDW got the gigs, and thus all anti-Flynn are wanting that because they believe that it would magically give them back the Freedom Fighters and all the old American Canon Sonic :V

          1. I see. Ugh, I don’t exactly hate the Freedom Fighters and all the other old Archie cast but their time is over, no reason to ‘officially’ bring them back.

  3. I heard Diamond distributors may resume comic book distribution in mid to late May 2020 even when COVID-19 subsides, but does this mean IDW may be back in business to catch up on releases of yet to be released IDW Sonic the Hedgehog issues?

  4. Honestly, me and Darryl hope Evan Stanley will approve with Sega to revive Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine, and Rotor.
