With major cities and countries in shutdown due to the Coronavirus, many businesses are being forced to temporarily suspend their operations. This includes comic-book distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors. They will be suspending operations starting April 1st.
In a statement from IDW president Chris Ryall, IDW will suspend May releases and “reduce its overall publishing line for products originally scheduled through July, with a focus on releasing our biggest projects in special editions to help drive traffic to stores through the summer.”
What does this mean for the Sonic comics? A report from Tails Channel has helped clear things up.
- Issues 29 and 30 are indefinitely delayed (Future issues likely to be delayed too.)
- Issues 27-32 and the 2020 Annual are returnable within 60 days if already ordered
- The issue with digital releases is unclear.
The good news is this doesn’t affect issue 27 which will be out Wednesday (if your local comic store is still open or allowing pickup). The 2020 Annual and issue 28 are still due for release in April.
I hope this IDW print hiatus isn’t a long one, I want this Coronavirus pandemic to subside in the next few weeks so that small business – even comic shops – can go back to work possibly at first on a few days a week and limited hour basis! When will IDW consider digital first for its comics as well as Sonic even when it has yet to finish the METAL VIRUS/ZOMBOT arc (The Sonic World version of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, that is) and has yet to have if possible the IDW debut of Sally Acorn and her Freedom Fighter partners? And if IDW goes belly up if it doesn’t get back to business in mid to late Summer 2020 could a new comic company like Udon get the Sonic comic book rights?
The suspension is not going to kill the company and the company is not going to close. They will be working on Sonic comics. That’s just the reality right now due to the Coronavirus. Also, there’s some good stuff coming next year.
Year 4 is going to be huge and Sonic and the crew are going to face a bigger threat.
What about the IDW debut of Sally Acorn’s Freedom Fighters?
Udon will probably not have the rights to new comics. Dark Horse, Viz Media, or Image are likely to do. IDW’s not closing.
The problem with digital releases is that those sales will be hurt too with more and more people getting laid and having no income coming in to buy comics.
well, daaaaang. i really think this is the end for a while.
This is getting on my fucking nerves! It’s one thing after another. What’s next, the internet itself!?
Come’on!
I’m serious! Someone bludgeon me already, so I can out cold until this virus is gone for good and we can resume life, because I do not want to be awake right now!
Maybe if we flatten the curve this COVID-19 pandemic could subside in days…
Oh well.. another Sonic story gone unfinished
The coronavirus sure is tough, to say the least, on everyone.
