When you think of Sonic in the 3rd Dimension, your mind will probably snap to the likes of Sonic Adventure or the more recent Sonic Forces. But before we first got to play a full 3D Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, a group of talented fans known as “Sonic Team Junior” took it upon themselves to reverse engineer DOOM (yes, that DOOM) to create their own 3D Sonic game back in 1998: Sonic Robo Blast 2, and you may be surprised to find out that over 20 years later, it’s still alive and kicking with updates and features.
This trailer shows it all: new features such as multiplayer, Tails assist and many other secrets to find! If you were disappointed with Sonic Forces, or have been itching to get a complete 3D Sonic experience, you can’t go wrong here! It’s a perennial entry in the Sonic community’s ever-growing library of fan games, hacks and mods. Even if the control scheme is a bit dated, it’s definitely worth your time to play this living piece of Sonic community history!
The latest version of Sonic Robo Blast 2 can be downloaded on their official website here. You can also follow Sonic Team Jr on Twitter for more news and updates on Sonic Robo Blast 2.
If you have a Switch with custom firmware you can also play it on that. 😁
“New features such as multiplayer”
Uh, the game’s always had multiplayer. That just kind of comes with the DOOM engine, though it does make a great selling point. I mean, what other Sonic game can you play through the whole story online with your friends?
Nice to see the fangame getting so much love after all these years.
