SEGA Trademarks new potential NiGHTS into Dreams project

It appears Sonic Team’s NiGHTS into Dreams… series may be getting a new entry, if a recent trademark filed by SEGA of Japan is any indication.

Earlier this month, on July 4, the company filed a trademark for “Nights Dream Wheel.” As is common with trademarks, it covers a wide variety of applications, but the trademark lists various storage mediums related to video game devices as the associated commodity.

Beyond it likely being a video game, however, this trademark doesn’t tell us much. It could be something for Japanese arcades, or mobile devices, and it might not even be related to NiGHTS into Dreams… at all. However, in a recent interview, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka expressed interest in coming back to the franchise, though he said he was “focused on Sonic” at the time.

SEGA has been on a tear when it comes to resurrecting its forgotten franchises, lately. From licensing series like Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon and Streets of Rage to other publishers, to last years Valkyria Chronicles 4 and the recently announced remake of Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, SEGA seems intent on giving many of its forgotten games another chance at life.

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz was also another SEGA game initially leaked as a trademark. First trademarked by SEGA of Japan as Tabegoro! Super Monkey Ball in early May, the game was finally, officially announced a week ago. If Nights Dream Wheel follows a similar timeline, we should have an idea of what it is in the next few months.

  1. After seeing that image of NiGHTS from the opening FMV of NiGHTS into Dreams…, I realised they have fangs.
