Sonic Mania Plus continues to surprise players in many ways with small references and nods. But now fans have discovered that the game also includes cheat codes! Yes actual cheat codes, remember them? We used to have them before DLC became a thing.
A series of cheat codes have been discovered which work across all versions of the game, we’re unsure if you need the full plus DLC to get these to work or if they will work on a fully patched vanilla version of Sonic Mania, so give it a try anyway.
From what we understand, they do not work on Encore mode, and some codes only work for Sonic.
To enable the codes, you need to do the following.
Enter Mania Mode and go to ‘No Save’.
You now need to enter the code for the level select.
- PS4: Hold Square, Select No save.
- Xbox: Hold X, Select No save.
- Switch: Hold Y, Select No save.
You will now be at the level select.
Go to sound test and play the following sounds to enable the desired code.
- 3 3 3 1 9 7 9 0 8 1 1 – Changes all animals into Squirrels.
- 4 1 2 6 – All Emeralds
- 1 9 9 2 1 1 2 4 – Infinite Continues
- 2 0 1 8 0 6 2 3 – Force Encore Mode
- 1 9 8 9 0 5 0 1 – Unknown
- 2 0 1 7 0 8 1 5 – Super Sonic Flight in normal levels (Don’t need to be Super to trigger it).
- 9 0 0 1 – Max Control For Sonic (Dropdash, Super Peel Out, Insta-Shield)
- 0 0 0 0 6 2 1 4 – Disable Super Music
Some of these codes combine to make interesting effects, for example, if you enable Force Encore Mode and Max Control For Sonic, it’s possible to give the Super Peel Out move to Knuckles and other characters.
Try them yourself and see what happens.

Because I don’t know how to access the level select on PC.
However if you do I’m sure you can figure out the rest.
PC version commands are the same as Xbox. They are basically the same machine running Windows.
Should be noted, you need to go into the secrets menu and enable Debug Mode before you can reach the level select.

But what is the significance of some of the numbers?
For example, 1989-05-01 appears to be a date, like how 1992-11-24 was the release date of Sonic 2.
9001 is likely a reference to the “over 9000!!!” DBZ power level meme.
The 20xx-yy-zz ones are the release dates of Mania and Mania Plus presumably.
The 0 0 0 0 6 2 1 4 code is likely just 4 1 2 6 in reverse, which makes some sense as it disables the musical effect of Super mode while 4 1 2 6 enables Super mode.
But 1979-08-11? And why the 333 preceding it? Can you enter 444 to get a different animal? A person’s birthday or other anniversary?
Same for 1989-05-01, not that we know what it does yet… Another birthday/anniversary? Perhaps it’s just a dummied out code for the devs that they forgot to remove.
I think that the year your talking about was the release of the original Sega Genesis (or Megadrive depending on where you live)
1989-05-01 is Hunter Bridges’ birthday. He made a track for Encore Mode (Back in Action) and he was also the project manager for Mania.
1979-08-11 is Simon Thomley’s birthday. He was another one of the people who made Mania possible.

Some of the codes look like dates.
They do work without mania plus, except the encore code (obviously). I can confirm this.
Just use an Xbox or PS4 controller. They use the same inputs.
Is that a DBZ reference for max control Sonic?

Some codes are just references to older codes, meanwhile others are dates, most likely birthdays and release days.
1-9-7-9-0-8-1-1 is Simon “Stealth” birthday, and his fursona is a squirrel, so they added that code as a easter egg.
4-1-2-6 was the Emerald code in Sonic 2, so this is kinda obvious.
1-9-9-2-1-1-2-4 was the release of Sonic 2, if I remember correctly. And in this game there was a code that gave you infinite continues.
2-0-1-8-0-6-2-3 This one was Sonic 27th anniversary, and actually it doesn’t have anything related to the Encore DLC, but, still, there it is.
1-9-8-9-0-5-0-1 is Hunter Bridges’ birthday, actually we don’t know anything about this one, but it could be related to Vape Mode, or Vaporwave Mode.
2-0-1-7-0-8-1-5 I don’t remember exactly if this is Mania og release date, but close to it.
9-0-0-1 is a reference to: “IT’S OVER 9000!!!” from DBZ.
6-2-1-4 is the Emerald code reversed, logically it would do the opposite to the Emerald code. In this case, disable Super Music.
Also, in PC, to activate Level Select, you need to press Q and A with the Debug Mode activated.
Disable Super Music while playing Stardust Speedway Act 2? Hell yeah.
The Unknow cheat code is the oppiside of the only Squirrel cheat (3 3 3 1 9 7 9 0 8 1 1) there only bunny’s and Flikky’s

Super Sonic Flight does nothing for me. What is supposed to happen?
I tried it on standard Vanilla Sonic Mania fully updated on Switch and they work.
For those having trouble entering the level select, you need to enable debug mode before entering the code.
Just in case anyone else is having trouble, I think you need to have S3&K mode or Max Control turned on to use Super Sonic Flight.
