Sonic Battle Racers Kickstarter Now Live

About a week ago we brought you news that a Sonic themed board game was in development. Well the Kickstarter for said board game is now live.

Sonic Battle Racers has two backing options at the time of writing.

  1. Pledge $10 (or more): No Reward.
  2. Pledge $100: The Base game + Kickstarter Exclusive Super Sonic playable Piece + Kickstarter Exclusive physical badnik pieces + any stretch goals.

The game itself is essentially a race, with players attempting to win against several other opponents whilst dodging badniks and other traps. Included in the game are several badnik pieces which will not be available at retail to accompany Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman.

There are also promises of expansion packs to come at a later date but these are not included in the Kickstarter.

Blaze, Sticks and Shadow playable pieces are stretch goals, however only Blaze and Sticks are included in the $100 pledge, you have to purchase Shadow separately.

So what do you think? Going to back this game? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I don’t see anyone playing this more than once or twice, if at all. Fun for parents to play with their kids, maybe… otherwise, why bother?

  2. The article implies that $10 is the minimum pledge, but that’s not strictly true: that’s just the pre-filled pledge amount. It might be worth making note of that in the article itself.

That aside, I’m not sure they’ve really thought the pledge rewards through hard enough. Surely there could have been pledge rewards at price points below $100? Maybe something at $20 and at $50? Regardless, I wish them the best of luck 🙂

    1. Huh… They just added two new pledge levels at $50 and $150. Not quite what I had in mind, but it works 🙂

  3. The $100 tier being the only one to actually get you any reward at all seems like an odd choice. I mean, board games aren’t cheap by any means, $100 for this, even with the exclusives, seems a bit pricey and especially hard to gain backers with that price.

  4. So..if I got the game…plus shadow pack, plus uk postage that works out as roughly £150 after running that through the xe currency converter.

Im a big Sonic fan…but that seems a bit too expensive for a board game.

    Pass.

  5. Wait, they couldn’t fund this themselves? How hard of times has SEGA fallen on that they need a kickstarter for such a simple board game?

    1. Doesn’t quite work that way. This isn’t SEGA deciding to do a board game. They make video games, that’s what they know. This is a board game company approaching SEGA to use the Sonic license for *their* board game.

    2. I’m guessing this is not a “proper” product. The costs are probably from buying the liscence for use more than anything else. It’s like Shemue 3; SEGA owns the rights, but the game isn’t really made by their jurisdiction and outside of the liscence itself is sort of indie. Which is good, so mud-face Iizuka can’t try and ruin this one.

  6. It’ll never happen but, Mighty, Fang, Bean, Bark expansion?
Mighty’s me begging for the extra mile. With the other three I can at least wave my finger at Mania and say: “See, See~e, they’re relevant again!”

    1. Slipping Fang, Bark and Bean into Mania was a huge step towards doing with those characters what Heroes did with the Chaotix …but making it to where “it’s not really them, haha, nudge-wink” was a bit of a kick in the teeth.

Just bring them all back. They’re needed more than ever. Especially Fang.

  7. I never backed the Mega Man board game, I’ll never back this game. At least It’ll see creation, but it won’t have Boom Guest star, Sticks the Badger OR GUN Agent-turned-Mercenary (Blame Trump’s need for a military parade) Shadow the Hedgehog. Since the SEGA Forums were shut down, I’m feeling empty thatI find myself on the computer less.
