“Special Reveal” At the SXSW 25th Anniversary Panel

A few days ago we brought you news that there would be a very special panel at the SXSW 2016 convention.

Well since then, there’s been a number of developments, the first major detail is that the event will now be live-streamed via twitch. However the more interesting detail is that according to the SXSW website, there will be a ‘special reveal’ as part of the panel for the anniversary celebrations.

What will this special reveal be? Well we know for certain that it’s not going to be a game. However with Yuji Naka being present along with Iizuka, you can’t blame fans for speculating it might be something important.

More details as and when we get them.

          1. Sega releases a mainstream Sonic game every 2 years. Lost World was the last one in 2013, so we are getting a new one this year. And following their pattern, it will be revealed in March or April (very low chance to be revealed in May), and it will have a release date in November, probably for Black Friday

          2. Just because there is likely going to be an anniversary game doesn’t mean that they have to announce it at this panel.

            Likewise, just because they aren’t announcing a new game at this panel does not mean that we won’t get a new game announcement this year. We just won’t be getting it from here is all.

          3. Also they have literally said that they don’t plan on announcing a new game at the panel.

  2. It will be the movie. Calling it now. Maybe a teaser image that gives bugger all away, maybe a confirmed case member and a release date. Maybe some hint (but no screens or footage) of the 25th anniversary game too.

    2. But from the sounds of things barely any progress was made, and with a delay for 2018 I seriously doubt they have anything worth showing off right now. No, it’s likely going to be something else, though if not a game then what?

      1. When they revealed they were making Batman v Superman all they had was a logo – not even a script! They only decided to do it like two days earlier. I reckon we’ll get a Sonic movie teaser image (they must have some character designs done by now), a release date for sometime in 2018 and some casting information.

        1. Well if anything it will be bare minimum. I’m honestly not expecting to hear too much about the movie beyond that until like 2017 at the earliest.

  4. Maybe they’ll show off a new redesign for Sonic? Unless they go full Classic, I assume the design will just be a few tweaks. I think it would be neat to have him wear memorabilia from previous games, personally. Then again, this is the Sonic fanbase after all; they’d explode at anything 😛

    1. Iizuka said that they have no plans on changing Modern Sonic’s design in the next 10 years. Modern is going to look the same for quite a while.

  5. I’m in the crowd that expects a movie teaser. I mean, Ratchet & Clank’s movie was teased in April 2013, with it now coming in April 2016 (but originally, it was planned for 2015.) If we’re to be expecting this around 2018, I would very much expect and be pleased with a movie trailer.

    Here’s hoping that the panel goes great. 🙂

    1. I’m hoping for a movie teaser too. At the same time, I don’t expect a whole lot as the movie has only just started production.

      Maybe they just show off a few character concepts or something for the movie?

      1. I don’t expect a ton. But at the point of March 19th, this reveal has to be something sort of important, right?

          1. I hope the rumors aren’t true that they’re going to spin the new Sonic Cinematic Universe out of this movie. I hated that the last time they did in Big 2 just to hype up the Chao in Space reboot.

            All I want is a back to basics approach with this: Big, Froggy, and random C-list celebrities just fishing and getting into trouble. Is that too much to ask?

            I don’t need teenage Sonic-Man showing up at the last minute for an over glorified cameo, I don’t care how much money SEGA spent to get back the rights!

          2. Ugh, IKR, Sonic-Man… He’s such a creator’s pet.

            But I hear the next BBFA3 movie is taking the franchise back to the roots with the return of Shia LaBeouf. I hope the creators don’t handle it like they did with Lost Pond though… I want some authentic classic BBFA3!

  6. Well it isn’t going to be a NEW game… so I assume it’s just going to be a trailer for Fire and Ice or something. I’m not getting my hopes up. Last time that happened the big news turned out to be a new intern working at SEGA and the time before that I was hyped over a simple compilation of Genesis games on 3DS. Setting my expectations SUPER low this time so I’m not disappointed.

    1. What if it’s not a trailer for Fire and Ice, but a trailer for a new Dreamcast? Jk that’ll never happen. ?

    1. Cause they aren’t ready to reveal it yet. Either they’re planning on an announcement trailer in April or it will be revealed at E3. They are going to explain those cryptic numbers though, so that’ll at least be a step in the direction of the anniversary title.

      1. What cryyptic numbers? Is it a teaser that’s already come tp pass? I’m in the dark here

On some of the more recent posts on the Sonic twitter and facebook accounts there were a series of numbers placed that were meant to be hinting towards something, presumably related to the 25th anniversary. one series of numbers was along the lines of 4 1 16 which would suggest April 1st 2016, which despite being April Fools Day also tends to be a day where big announcements and teaser trailers have been revealed in the past. There were a few others but I don’t quite remember what they were. Try looking up previous articles on subjects relating to the Sonic account.

          2. Some people have speculated that those might be another date, March 21, but I’ve also heard the possibility of a countdown or a trilogy thrown around.

  8. Of course they will reveal it is a game…it is all a game…but not the one everyone expects.

What I suspect is that it’s not a NEW game but a NEW collection of games, one that’s worthy of release for a 25th anniversary including games that we’ve wanted to see in a collection including Knuckles Chaotix. They include a mix of the original trilogy, 3D Blast, Sonic CD, Knuckles Chaotix, and the Adventure games along with all the Game Gear games on one disc!

    3. But what about Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Generations, Sonic Riders and other modern Sonic games?

  10. well im sure the big announcement will be exciting yeah im sure the 25th anniversary game will be revealed maybe but its one week away so lets see what happens.

  12. Well… I looked up the SCHEDULE for SXSW of 2016 and a lot of it has to do with Film festivals.

    1. Oooh, Axx is on to something here. Good eye. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

    1. Less likely, since Rise of Lyric made Sonic ’06 look like a masterpiece
      (meaning it’s now the worst Sonic game ever made)
