Well this week keeps bringing us surprises doesn’t it?
You might remember almost a year ago to the day, a kickstarter was launched for a Sega MegaDrive retrospective artbook. Well… the kickstarter was successful and since Monday, those who backed it finally got their copies.
And for Sonic fans there is one hell of a surprise waiting inside. There are translated documents from Sonic 1′s original design pitch. The pages feature the original introduction sequence and an alternative ending, both of which were completely cut from the final game.
The intro features Sonic and his friends from the old Sonic the Hedgehog band running across the screen and also includes an alternative boss fight which appears to be a very early Green Hill Zone boss battle.
The ending is very different and sounds more like Sonic 2′s ending. Eggman attempts to escape in a plane and takes off. Sonic however runs up a mountain and leaps from it onto the plane destroying it. Falling through the sky, Sonic is saved by one of his band member friends, he is dropped to the waiting band and they play a song as the credits roll.
Other surprises include a few images of cut stages and interviews with Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima as they talk about the development of several Sonic games including Chaotix, Sonic CD and even Sonic Heroes gets a mention.
