Sonic Drift 2 Races Onto 3DS Virtual Console This Week

Sonic Drift 2 screen 1There’s even more retro Sonic love on the Nintendo 3DS eShop coming your way this week, this time in the form of Game Gear title Sonic Drift 2. Before Sonic R, Sonic Riders, and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing came this handheld kart racing spin-off starring everyone’s favourite blue hedgehog, alongside other playable characters including robotic doppelganger Metal Sonic and the treasure hunter Fang the Sniper (or Nack the Weasel – what is it with Sonic characters and having different naming conventions?). Unlike the original Sonic Drift, this game was released outside of Japan and it was initially renamed Sonic Drift Racing in Europe, even though the title screen still called it Sonic Drift 2.

A description of the game is included in Nintendo’s announcement for this week’s eShop releases, as below:

Start your engines and prepare for the race of your life! Choose from seven of your favorite Sonic characters including Sonic, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman (AKA Dr. Robotnik) and race your way to the finish line. Use each racer’s special ability to gain an edge over the competition and win the fabled Chaos Emeralds! Race across 17 courses in the ultimate Chaos Grand Prix! Challenge a friend via local two-player multiplayer! Choose between seven classic Sonic
characters including Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, and the nefarious Dr. Eggman!

Sonic Drift 2 will be available to download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Europe this Thursday, priced at £3.59 (€3.99).

Will you be jumping into one of Sonic and co.’s karts and drifting round the track later this week? Or are you thoroughly perplexed by the idea of Sonic driving a car when he can run at the speed of sound? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

  1. Yay, because everyone liked Sonic Drift, or nobody did why did they make this game grumble grumble.

    1. all it is is just Pole Position With Sonic characters. At that point you really just gotta decide whether or not you like that game to be honest.

  2. They should release Tails’ Sky Patrol and Sonic Drift 1 as import titles. You know, for completing a Sonic Game Gear Collection.

    1. Its ok, you can just admit you like those games. We wont hold it against you.

Unless its Sonic Labyrinth. Then we may…

  3. Ugh. I guess I can’t complain that they’re expanding the Game Gear and Sonic library on the eShop, but… my God. Seeing things about stuff like this, Sonic Blast, and Sonic Labyrinth being released there is… wow. I wonder how those maintain 3-5 (yes, five) star ratings. They’ve even become hits in the eShop… which, you know.. I love Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble too… but these ones.. oi.

      1. I’d be really excited about that, if it weren’t for the fact that Sonic the Hedgehog is pretty much everywhere. Seriously, that has to be one of the most ported games I’ve ever seen. Does this 3D classic add any elements from the new iOS version though?

        1. No, it’s a pretty straight-forward port, but there are a lot of sweet bonus features like the 3D effect, being able to change the sound style between a Model 1 Genesis and a Model 2, and you can even play in a sort of “tube TV” mode where the screen becomes rounded! No Tails or Knuckles, but still very cool and I’m definitely getting it! I’ve bought the game on a million different game systems and beaten the game probably 10 times already, but this is just a really cool port, and I don’t want to miss it!

    1. As in Sonic 3? I know…it’s like they keep releasing Sonic 1, sometimes number 2, but they never release Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles! I mean, I guess saying NEVER is somewhat stretching it, but you know what I mean.

  4. I actually love Sonic Drift! Don’t know why, but it’s actually a pretty fun little handheld racing game. I found it cool, anyway.
