Sonic Adventure in Source Filmmaker! It’s a Giant Talking Egg!

What, another well made recreation via Source Filmmaker? Strange, isn’t it!

Here is a little something to tickle your nostalgia on this lovely Thursday morning! Dive back into the mellow that was 1998, back when the voices of Ryan Drummond, the young Corey Bringar, and the late Deem Bristow kicked off the Dreamcast era, as HypotheDragon recreates the initial confrontation between Sonic, Tails, and Eggman from Sonic Adventure for your viewing pleasure!

Wait, he animated this within two days!? No way, I can’t believe this!

  1. Seeing this is TOTALLY making me want a full Sonic Adventure Remake. (of course, despite how terrible the voices where, they’re kinda part of the charm with the game, so I’m not sure how to handle that. Probably have an option to toggle old and new voiceovers)

    1. Yeah, oddly while watching the video makes me wish that, Sega would make similar remake like Nintendo did with Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 3DS.

  2. A pretty impressive and amazing work. Kudos to HypotheDragon! However, watching that video made me realize two things:

    1) Dialogue and characterizations have gotten a lot better in recent years. Seeing that old SA1 scene with modern CGI makes the dialogue seem really awful. Though to be fair, that cutscene’s dialogue was almost entirely made up by the English translators of SA1, not the original scriptwriters.

    2) Modern Eggman made that recreation even goofier than the original cutscene. He looks really dorky in his current design. Oh, wait, I already knew that. I wish Sega would revert him back his Adventure look and make him look like he did in the SA1 opening FMV, or at least make him look less derpy.

    1. Ummm, the design of Eggman hasn’t changed from Adventure to today albeit with very little tweaks.

    2. Umm… his “Modern” design IS his Adventure design, buddy. Aside from 2006 and the Sonic Riders spin-offs, Dr. Eggman’s current look hasn’t changed at all since 1998.

  3. Well. that’s actually fairly impressive. The voices clash with the models though, at least to me. It just seems… odd.

With stuff like this and that Ratchet film, hopefully SEGA won’t be too averse to making a Sonic film some day in the future.

    1. I dont see whats wrong with the acting…
The music is drowning out the voices…but other than that…

  4. This is the best thing since sliced bread.

I only have 2 complaints about this, constructive criticism, I might add.

First thing would have to be the eyes, Sonic and Tails’ eyes should have that white spot on them like other official game models do.
    Second, Eggman’s mustache is transparent.

But, I couldn’t do better. This is an amazing video! 😀

    1. That criticism about the eyes is fairly valid, though I think that has more to do with the lighting, rather than the models themselves. That ‘white spot’ you’re referring was always rendered on the eye texture itself in games up to Sonic 2006, but come Sonic Unleashed, the Hedgehog Engine takes care of that with the “Global Illumination” effect-thingamawhoozit. The only post-Unleashed game not to do that is Colors, and that’s only because the Wii probably isn’t powerful enough to handle something like the Hedgehog Engine anyway.

I could be wrong though, I haven’t gotten into animating yet.

      1. Ha. I remember when people constantly criticized Nintendo for never having good graphics with the Wii, but now the Wii U is here and kicking some serious butt. It is also showing that Nintendo does care about graphics as well as gameplay.

        1. /facepalm

it has great graphics because its a next-gen console. what, were you expecting the wii u to be only as strong as the ps3 and 360, consoles from 6 years ago?

        2. Hey, don’t gt me wrong. I love my Wii U, but it isn’t kicking anything. It’s doing horribly in sales.

  5. Eggman: Or else i’ll take them from you by force…THE HARD WAY!

Sonic: What is taken by force the easy way?

  6. It is really sad that this has not only better animation, But lip syncing than the original sonic adventure 😀

    1. How is is sad? That game out in, what, 1998? This is 2013, where we can order pizza and a nuclear strike with tiny computers we keep in our pockets. It’s not surprising, nor is it sad, that we can do incredible things in 2013 that couldn’t be done in 1998.

That’s like playing Ocarina of Time and saying “it’s so sad they couldn’t do this on a Super Nintendo.”

  7. This was… Fantastic! This makes the fan-made Sonic movie’s sonic model look awful! Not to mention, this was made in two days?!?! Just imagine what can be done in a month!

  8. Holy cow, I forgot how bad Tails’ voice actor was. Great video though. Can’t wait for the inevitable remake of “You’re comparing yourself to me? Ha! You’re not even good enough to be my fa-” “I’LL MAKE YOU EAT THOSE WORDS!”

  9. Aww man! Watching that made me wanna play Sonic Adventure even more! Gahh, it sucks being a Sonic noob. I wish I had more Sonic in my childhood, I was more into other stuff. But for some reason I still feel nostalgia out of the old games, even though I started with Unleashed. I dunno just knowing that all these people who get so excited over this game makes me feel the nostalgia too, it rubs off on me I guess.

      1. It’s pretty hard to find this stuff in Aus bro. Instead of Walmart or whatever you guys have we’ve got Cash Converters, Dreamcast games are practically extinct there. And my mother is not very keen on online shopping. I’ll have to wait until I’m old enough to get a good job, so I can pay for my own purchases, I’m just a kid =P

  10. I would love to seen the Space Colony ARK scene done this way!

Eggman: (pointing at gun at Amy while talking to Sonic) Just put the Emerald down right there and BACK OFF!
