Sonic 1 Android 2 width=

SEGA has announced at GDC 2013 that the classic Mega Drive title that kickstarted their mascot’s career Sonic the Hedgehog will be released for iOS and Android in April. The game will cost $2.99, run at 60FPS and will include a new time attack mode, widescreen support and a completely remastered soundtrack. Android Police reports that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is also planned for release on Android too, but SEGA didn’t give any details.

Christian Whitehead, who made the recent Sonic CD port, made this tweet to a follower on March 23rd. (Thanks, TimmiT)

Those feels, I’m preparing a build for GDC and I won’t even be there.

Could he be behind this port?

  1. Just think Shadzter could have been really mean and said “NEW SONIC GAME ANNOUNCED.”

    1. Oh please no! I have had enough worthless rumors come and go by now so I really don’t have the will to listen to another!

  2. Even though this is just Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 all over again, I stress people should support this particular release.

    Just trust me on this.

    1. I mean, some reason would be nice I guess. I’ve played the Android releases of CD and Sonic 4:EP2. and both had me wishing for a control pad. Why is this release so important?

  3. I’m sorry but what’s the point of porting this to iOS we already have it what’s the difference?….. where’s sonic 3/ & Knuckles?

  4. Interesting to note: this version of Sonic the Hedgehog has the “Press Start Button” Text enabled on the title screen. : )

  5. Wait..released for iOS..but..isn’t it already? I feel like my versions are obsolete now….

    1. Unless they mean the ones that were released for the Master system? Although I heard that the Sonic 1 and 2 that are out now aren’t done very well, maybe they feel the need to redo them?

      1. Yea, I don’t know. They’re not thaaaaat bad, they certainly could be better on iOS. I have an iPhone 5, and they aren’t even optimized, so playing is a bit annoying because my fingers have to be awkwardly far into the screen.

  6. This is great news, but this makes my Sonic 1 and 2 that I own on the iOS obsolete. However, would be amazing if there was a Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles released later on.

  7. Dose that mean that the Sonic 1 and the Sonic 2 on the App Store will be taken dwn when this comes out.

  8. Christian Whitehead said on his twitter that the iOS versions of the game should just be an update, as far as he knows.

  9. Please come to consoles/pc! I’d love to buy these, but that’s the only way that I will… at most, I’ll listen to the soundtrack.

  10. If its just a port of Sonic 2. Meh. I already have an emulator for that.

If its running via the power of the taxman. Money will be thrown in his direction.

  11. And once again, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has been kicked to the curb by these two…
I never thought I’d say this, but I am so, SO, tired of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. What we need is a Taxman version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Not the other 2 that have been ported, like, 2,000,000 times already. Maybe even a Taxman version of Knuckles Chaotix….

    1. I know, right? I never understood why 1 and 2 got all the ports, and love, while 3, especially the real version when locked on with Knuckles, was always tossed to the side. No respect. That said, I’d go on a genocidal rampage for a Taxman treatment.

  12. Yep, Sonic 1 and 2 are already on iOS, not sure about Android though. While it isn’t the best port, this new one (if it have the new engine) may be worth it.

    1. You should ba able to get many Genesis / Megadrive games on Wii Shop Channel, PlayStation Network Store, XBox Live, and possibibly Steam.

      1. Yes but those are emulation. If taxman is doing this then this then I hope there is a console port!

  13. The screens are of an iPhone build, its rendered at 1136×640 (Native iPhone 5 res).

Dear Taxman, please convince them to add new stages this time around. I know you tried once and was shot down, but it would be great if a working Hidden Palace, Wood Zone, and etc were added to the Sonic 2 port, if you’re the one working on it.

  14. This is so very unexpected! A day dream is that a fully realized Sonic level/episode creator may be something closer to reality than a dream now. : ) It could still be a few years but that’s much closer than never. http://uploads3.wikipaintings.org/images/m-c-escher/metamorphosis-iii-1968.jpg

They would want to release the original and sequel first. : ) That way they would have more time to figure out intelligent and intuitive ways for there to be the capacity for original enemies and contraptions along with familiar ones. I don’t know! This is really good news on its own but there may be exciting implications as well.

  15. Well, seeing as I already downloaded Sonic 1 and 2 for free on PSN, thanks to PlayStation Plus, maybe the Update will also be free as well.

    1. That would be nice. Although I’m very happy to pay for them on PSN.

If Sonic CD is anything to judge from, Taxman’s remakes are (really) well-priced.

  16. There seems to be a lot of people here being ignorant.

What we already have are emulations of the original games running on iGenesis. The Sonic 1, 2, and Spinball apps on the app store are 4:3 original emulations.

This new one seems to be getting the Taxman treatment, 16:9 widescreen, solid 60fps, and a remastered soundtrack.

  17. Pretty awesome news, but I probably can’t get it for my own reasons.
At least I have Sonic Classic Collection =3

  18. Isn’t there already Sonic 1 and 2 on iOS? I have both of them… that’s weird… and they are made by SEGA, so I think it’s official.

  19. If Taxman is working on this, I’ll be one happy man indeed; the current versions of Sonic 1 & 2 for iOS (running on official SEGA emulators) have been playing up ever since iOS6 was released. First they wouldn’t run, and then when they were patched to support the new OS, they were practically crawling with slowdown issues. I tip my hat to SEGA for fixing that by releasing new versions of them, though I’m hoping they won’t force us to pay for them all over again when they’re out… :\

  20. How about a new PSN/XBLA release? I’ve been wanting a proper 16:9 release of the original Sonic trilogy since before Sonic CD was even announced for rerelease.

  21. Everyone is saying its already on iOS. no one noticed that the play store doesn’t have it

  22. I think before Taxman can work on Sonic 3 & Knuckles port for iOS, They need to update Sonic 1 & 2 first using his engine and stuff so they can do the lock-on tech. I hope they will update the console versions as well… LOL
