History of Sonic the Hedgehog Book Due for December UK Release

UK fans waiting for the History of Sonic the Hedgehog book have finally been given an approximate release dat of early of December, according to UDON Entertainment who will be distributing the English version of the 300-page compendium.

Although this date is later than had been initially anticipated (and with confusion a few months ago as to whether the publication had been cancelled), UDON Entertainment explain via their blog that these delays were due to the quality of the translation from the French version of the book. Quoting from the blog:

The reason for the delay from the original shipping date comes entirely down to quality: we wanted to make this book the very best it could be. When we put up our initial preview pages along with the book’s announcement this summer, some fans noticed that the writing was a little bit stiff. While Pix’n Love did an amazing job with the French language edition of this book, the English translation that UDON was provided with just wasn’t the strongest it could be. We at UDON have always prided ourselves on the quality of our books, so when we realized that this book wouldn’t read as smoothly as we wanted it to, we decided to re-write all 300 pages of the English translation. That’s what the fans would want, and that’s what we wanted because we’re fans too.

The re-write by UDON Associate Editor Ash Paulsen (a Sonic super fan according to the blog) is now approved by SEGA, and should give fans looking to purchase a copy for Christmas extra assurance that this title should be a top quality production.

  7. I actually didn’t know Sonic was originally supposed to have a human girlfriend…that kinda explains why Elise is…and….oh man I figured it out!

    1. One of the things I enjoyed most about the editing/rewriting process is that, as a Sonic fan, I got to learn a lot of behind-the-scenes facts about Sonic during the editing process that I did not previously know. I knew something about Sonic originally having a human girlfriend, but I didn’t know all the details. Now I do!

      I’m hoping you guys have similar experiences when you start reading through the book!

  10. Hi all! This is Ash Paulsen, UDON’s Associate Editor and the guy responsible for rewriting all of the text for The History of Sonic the Hedgehog’s English release. I just wanted to thank you all for being so patient and bearing with us during the book’s slight delay. I’m a passionate Sonic fan just like you all, which is why I felt it was so important to make the English edition of the book the very best it could be with regard to the integrity and professionalism of the text (Pix ‘n Love did a great job; we just wanted to go the extra mile with the English edition). This of course meant delaying the book by around a month, but I assure you all that the wait will have been worth it once you have this book in your hands and see how awesome the finished product is!

    I know that sounds like typical PR speak, but I promise it isn’t! I really do love Sonic and think he’s unfairly trashed in the gaming media these days, so I wanted to give this book my all for the other English-speaking Sonic fans out there. It was a gargantuan undertaking but also a total labor of love, so I hope you guys enjoy reading and browsing through it as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it!

      I was wondering, does the english version have two editions? The French one had a ‘collectors edition’ as well as the standard. No problems if thats not the case, just lets me know so I can pre-order faster =p

      1. No problem, I’m happy to talk with the Sonic fan community about this book as much as I can! No, the English version is only coming in one edition. I’m not sure what the differences between the standard and collector’s editions were in France, though.

    1. It’s quite possible that it will be. Many of our (UDON’s) current and previous books have been available (in limited capacities) in bookstores and, more commonly, comic stores.

  12. I’m so getting this! I’ve had mine pre-ordered for what seems like months. SO EXCITED!! If I live in the US can I order off of Amazon.co.uk in order to get the book sooner?? Thanks for the great news, T-Bird, TSS, and Ash Paulsen, because I was expecting the latest delay to push the release date back to January (well, I guess that still holds true for us Americans).

    1. Actually, the early December date is for the US, too. (Udon mainly distributes their stuff in America and the original blog post was mainly to dispel all of the January delay rumors.)
