S&ASR Transformed Character Roster to Differ Across Platforms

Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett aka S0L has informed fans via the official SEGA Forums that the character roster for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed will differ across platforms. The total number of characters across all platforms is 29, but no single version will include all 29. Some will have low 20’s and others will have high 20’s. Steve says this is because some platforms feature characters that are unique to that platform, but won’t announce which right now. However, he does say that some are SEGA characters and some are not.

The full statement is available after the jump:

The thing is, different people think of different things when you say ‘How many characters are in the game’.

Are we talking about playable choices, drivers, vehicle forms, which platform are we talking about, what?

Me, I go with actual playable choices on the character select. Over all the different platforms, this totals up to 29 actual playable choices. But that doesn’t mean that there are 29 playable choices in all platforms (in fact no single platform has all 29). Some drop down to the low 20’s, some instead have high 20’s.

Why is this? Well some platforms have characters that are unique to that platform. I’m not going to say which, that’s part of the fun of the reveals! Some are SEGA characters, some are not. Don’t bother asking πŸ˜›

Playable choices doesn’t necessarily equal drivers either. Not as we’re talking passengers or hood ornaments, counting those would indeed be cheap, but you know this is game all about transformation, we are doing things with the vehicles that we’ve not shown you, that are going to really surprise you.

So yes I get that it’s fun to debate who is right and who is wrong, but at the end of the day, you can measure what’s there in loads of different ways. Across all the playable vehicles, there are currently more than 90 different forms (as each vehicle has a land, air and sea mode + you’ve not seen anything on the All-Stars…) and who said each vehicle was limited to a single driver… Or indeed vehicle type per surface.

Wait and see. This is why whenever you ask us anywhere, we can’t give you a straight answer. Well that and the NDA’s.

  1. Well this is unfortunate, nah kidding (if I get the xbox 360 version I don’t want banzo and kazooie again, I want freaking master chief that’d be pretty cool, however I have a feeling the ps3/vita version is the one to get with wii u in 2nd, 3ds in 3rd, and zbox 360 in last (now this is assuming though, so we’ll see, nintendo’s version could be the better version (I’m not holding my breath on the xbox 360 version).

    1. :C That sucks. I was looking forward to trying out all 29. Guess that plans gone.

  2. This is shaping up to be a neato racer, but also a stain on Sumo’s catalog. :<

      1. Don’t forget that Sega actually does the Olympic Games series.
Not without Nintendo watching over of course..

      2. Correct. SEGA is going to under promote the Wii U version. You’ll be hearing more about the 360,PS3,3DS and PC versions.

          1. No I’m hating on Nintendo. SEGA’s 3rd party strategy is drastically changing. Unlike the Wii, you’ll seldom be seeing Sega supporting the Wii U. Simply because they have little to no interest in the system.

        1. Rumor is that Nintendo demanded too much money to let Disney use mario, so Disney used Sonic instead. That’s a rumor floating around the internet, I have not seen a legitimate source stating it however.

Anyway, I would love Mario to be in the WiiU and 3DS versions. But I’ll bet in the 29 he’s counting Miis and Avatars. Thus we have the 27 plus miis, plus avatars = 29. Miis are exclusive to WiiU and 3DS, Avatars exclusive to 360. There, no need to get excited with hopes of real guest stars.

          1. Actually the Director himself said it (Either at Sonic Boom or SDCC can’t remember off the top of my head) He basically said “Who would want a certain mustachioed plumber, and his brother, who only wanted more money?”

          2. He didn’t choose sonic because they couldn’t get Mario.
Sonic was going to be in it either way, the Director played the Sega games he said it himself. besides if you do a film about Video games Sonic would always be one of the Characters you’ll love to have cameo in it.

        2. Well Bowser is in there. So I guess they were willing to have some sort of involvement.

  3. Here’s hoping for some surprises on the 360 version. It doesn’t seem like the 360 would have as many, since they don’t have as many cartoony mascots (outside of Banjo-Kazooie), but you never know. Maybe we’ll get to see Master Chief, he does have plenty of vehicles in his franchise.

  4. WiiU has the Mii and 360 has Avatar… PS3 has Sackboy, maybe?

Why do I get the feeling that the ‘missing characters’ will later be downloadable like with Soul Calibur 4 and its use with the Star Wars cameos.

  5. This is an obvious cash grab,
I personally am glad they are so honest in this, especially with sponsors from Nascar’s Danica Patrick and the inclusion of Wreck-it Ralph, we all know of Sega’s recent financial issues what with the closure of most of the european departments.
So anything to help them get them out of the money issues they are having that they might one day make more games based on older forgotten franchises *COUGH*shenmue*COUGH*alex kidd*COUGH*ecco*COUGH*
We all know that after awhile the “console dependant” characters while come out as DLC at a later date.

I can’t wait to be proven wrong but that is the way of the game companies of late.

  6. Oh, for goodness sake. Just put them all in every version. This is so unfair. I don’t want to have to buy every damn version of the game just so that I can play as every character.

    1. Dude, I don’t think that’s entirley possible. Think of it this way, would Mario be on the Xbox 360 or PS3?

  7. “Well some platforms have characters that are unique to that platform. I’m not going to say which, that’s part of the fun of the reveals! Some are SEGA characters, some are not.”

I’m fine with console exclusives like Banjo being Xbox or Drake being PS3. But the fact that it says some are Sega characters causes some concern for me. I don’t want to be missing out on one of my favorite characters because I chose the “wrong” console version to get. I’m rooting for Selvaria Bles either way.

  8. I have a feeling the “Some are SEGA characters” statement could be referring to characters from Sega games that were console exclusives. Like the PS3 would get Valkyria Chronicles charters while the 360 wouldn’t as VC was a PS3 exclusive. Hopefully this isn’t the case as it would mean the PC version will be getting the shaft once again as there aren’t that many PC exclusive Sega titles (only ones that comes to mind are Footbal Manager and Total War).

    1. Spiral Knights is about all I can think of. Maybe the new Phantasy Star Online game? I guess if they use Steam they could also have some Team Fortress 2 characters.

      1. i would put that on my want list if they bring in Team Fortress 2, hell even Gordon Freeman, Chell, GLaDOS, the Cores, even Gabe Newel himself!

  9. Aside from characters, am I the only one who noticed the comment about vehicles?

I’m guessing there are unlockable cars as well ;D I hope Shadow’s bike makes a return. That motorcycle was gorgeous, and I want it XD

    1. Big difference. With Pokemon, you only need to get a different game, as opposed to a different console. And you can still acquire those Pokemon by means of trading. This means there’s no way to get the full game. You’ll always left out with someone.

  10. The high 20’s are probably going to be on the PS3, 360, PC, and Wii U versions. The low 20’s are probably going to be for the handheld versions (including iOS).

    Anyone agree?

    1. That makes perfect sense, actually. Maybe a possible Metro app version for phones running Windows 8 would allow for XBox avatars, but other than that, i can’t see any of the phone versions really having any exclusives.

  11. The high 20’s are probably going to be on the PS3, 360, PC, and Wii U versions. The low 20’s are probably going to be for the handheld versions (including iOS).

    Anyone agree?…

  12. As long as Vyse is on the PS3 version, I’ll be happy.

I have all the other consoles, but I’d really prefer to have this on PS3.

    1. I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say that Vyse is going to be one of the multiplatform character. Though I could be wrong.

  13. no wonder it’s sega is not in the title name, it’s just sonic and all-stars racing

    1. Proabably Vita and iOS too… but let’s not jump to conclusions yet. I already saw this coming. I had a feeling that at least one platform would have very few characters, and looks like I was sort of right. I will no doubt be getting the Wii U version, no matter what exclusive character(s) the other platforms will have.

The little Vita footage I saw was looking good. The 3DS version is the only version (aside from iOS) that I am skeptical of. All versions are due out in November, and we’ve yet to see any sort of 3DS footage. Well, usually when developers go multi platform for a game, they would show footage of the better version only. Because if they showed inferior footage, then no one would buy the “inferior” version. I quoted inferior because it’s not true.

I just hope that the 3DS version will be as graphically good as MK7. Anything lower than that – sorry SEGA.

      1. >I just hope that the 3DS version will be as graphically good as MK7
Agreed. I’m also hoping for at least a diverse number of characters on the 3DS and not just the obvious ones placed. If its gonna have the least rooster, might as well give it one of the best.

  14. I’ll be pretty annoyed if they have Hatsune Miku but only for the Playstation version. She has done a lot with Sega so I guess it is a possibility.

Sega characters that are exclusive to one console should be released as DLC for the others, at the very least.

      1. Keep in mind PS3 Didn’t get any extensions last installment on All-stars Racing. 😐 It only got Metal Sonic, but that was on 360 as well (And I think PC, but I never played the PC version.) Chances are they may fix that this time, but 3DS is defiantly a candidate for least Characters, and I get a stingy feeling Wii U will get least as well, we don’t even know if Wii U can get DLC either.

  15. All I’m hoping for is for ToeJam & Earl to make an appearance. They could’ve made the cut on the previous game but by then it was too late. So fingers crossed they appear on this one!

  16. Since Sega are doing re-releases on PS3 and Xbox maybe just maybe that’s a hint on who will be in the game.

  17. the just have to include dynamite headdy even though hes owned by treasure but it would be cool like the hammer head as his all star move or all the heads do diffrent things the bomb a bomb on the road the tiny head makes it easyer to go past other racers the dragon or pig head homes in on the nearest racer the warior head just like an invincabilty power up the hammer goes in all 8 directions around the veical and the vacume head sucks the nearest veical to him sucks it up if its close enough and spitis him back. what would be a good idea for the flying sections would be headdy drops his veical and changes his head to the rocket or the biplane or bird head in the flying sections and when he lands his cars waiting right for him when he lands

  18. So much controversy! Well I’m not too fussed, I usually only buy 1 version of a game anyway…all the racers will have somewhat similar stats, and it’s almost likely that Console stores will have Character DLC at later dates.

Sounds exciting though! Looking forward to seeing All Star modes, wonder if they’re effected by vehicle types?

  19. that’s retarded. gaming companies are solely doing things like this for more money. greed.

  20. You know who would fit in on the Wii U and 3DS Versions? Diddy Kong. He starred in Diddy Kong Racing and DKR DS! He can drive the car that would actually transform into a hovercraft, and into a plane. Only, it won’t be the Modifiable version, but classic DKR Magic that would transform it.

    1. I agree, either Diddy Kong or Kirby. Diddy Kong seems more likely despite I would favor Kirby.

    2. True but doesn’t it seem like Diddy Kong Racing was the inspiration for this game…

  21. I don’t mind as long as Ristar appears on all formats assuming he’s actually in this one.

For a PS3 exclusive, I’d love to see Sly, Bentley and Murray with their van! πŸ˜€

  22. I’m guessing The 3DS version will probably have less characters while the PS3, Xbox and possibly Vita will have a higher number of characters (high 20s), it would of been so much better if all 29 characters were in all versions so less money would be used and you woulodn’t have to buy every version just to play as all characters but oh well. ._.

  23. I’m going out on a limb and say Danica is going to be multiplatform. Though I could be wrong.
