Sonic CD Tops PSN Charts in December

I can’t remember the last time I got to see this headline, let alone write it, but indeed it seems to have finally happened: a Sonic game has topped a sales chart. Sonic CD, the port of the legendary SEGA CD title managed to become the best selling on the PSN for the month of December, outselling other titles such as inFamous 2: Festival of Blood.

Sonic CD’s success on the PSN shows just how strong Sonic brand is more then 20 years after his debut. Given how fun Sonic CD is all these years later, it’s no surprise. These games definitely have a timeless quality to them!

    1. What?! I thought this new edidtion is a lot better! Improved collision detection, two soundtracks, Time Attack so you can play any act any time you want, only thing that comes to my mind and is better for original are songs. Because in original version they had lyrics. I don’t hate on you I’m just interested why you like it more?

      1. Well, the expression “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” comes to mind

        – No lyrics
        – Didn’t use original opening sequence
        – Unnecessary added jingle to the end of most level tracks
        – Can’t speed up score tallies at end of stages
        – Places you could time travel in the original no longer work

Tails was a nice extra, probably the reason I downloaded it, but his game play was lazy (surely someone could’ve come up with an animated ending) You can’t earn achievements while playing him either *shrugs*

One positive thing I have to say about it thou, the Special Stages run a hell of a lot smoother, it’s really nice

        1. – The lack of lyrics was due to legal issues; Sega couldn’t control it.
          – DID use the original opening sequence
          – No added jingle
          – You could never speed up te score tallies
          – All time travel spots work just like they did in the original.

Know what you’re talking about before you try to salvage reasons to complain about something.

          1. – Don’t really care about the lyrics, just pointing out what people are missing out on
            – They used the extended opening that first appeared in Sonic Jam, not the original
            – If you listen to the original JP soundtrack, you’ll hear the difference towards the end of some of the tracks
            – Yes you could, in the original, the scores were tallied up immediately, in this version, you have to wait until after the end of stage jingle has played
            – Quartz Quadrant conveyor belt tubes beg to differ (just one example)

Play the original SEGA/MegaCD version Hyperstar, then come back to us

          2. (Replying to this comment since I can’t reply to the most current one)

This may come as a surprise to you, but I have the Mega CD version, you can’t press a button to skip through the score tally, the end of the JPN soundtrack sounds the exact same as it did in the original (except it loops), the conveyor belt tubes are the ONLY places where you can’t time-travel anymore (everything else is normal), and you’re being a dumbass.

          3. – Congrats, how long have you had it for? I’ve had mine since 95 and played through it countless times
            – I never said you could skip through it, I said you could speed it up
            – Turn on this version, play Stardust Speedway and tell me there isn’t an unnecessary 3 – 6 second added jingle to the end of the track
            – I guess this is the part where we start calling each other names because we can’t respect one anothers opinions?

        2. lol those reasons as to why it’s not has good have to be the most ridiculous reasons I’ve seen.

Basically… “They cut the lyrics! NOT AS GOOD!”

          1. Well, you can’t have anything Sonic-related without some sort of pointless argument. It’s too bad, I really wanted to enjoy reading the comments on this post.

  1. And they said Sonic was dead…maybe they should have reserved that title for…Duke Nukem?

    1. I hope not. Despite the trainwreck that was his latest game, I still like the Duke (though I admit it’s mostly due to nostalgia, as I’ve been playing his games since the very first outing for DOS).

        1. Maybe, though that’s even worse for me, as I’ve been playing his games from even earlier than Duke’s. I actually became a Sega fan way back with the Master System!

  2. I am delighted that Sonic CD has sold so well. Sonic CD (2011) is not just an excellent re-release rebulit from scratch. It is the best 2d game ever released. I have been playing the game for a month and I still can’t put it down. Any idea how many copies of the re-release have been sold overall?

I first played CD in 2005 on the gems collections. It was great but that port was floored and a lot of extras were missing. The 2011 re-release as everything you could want:

    – Tails (perfectly suited as this game is about exploration).
    – Sonic 2 spindash (nothing wrong with CD spindash but nice that you have the option).
    – all the extras, Debug Mode, stage select, sound test etc.
    – both soundtracks that loop.
    – online leader boards.
    – all the bugs in previous versions removed.
    – HD, widescreen graphics.

The game has been given a fresh coat of paint and plays fantastic. CD has always been very popular because of the time travel, music and and wacky level designs. I like replaying it see how many rings and extra lives I can get. It’s infuriating when you loose all your rings when a badnik hits you from nowhere but I like the difficulty that feels harder than the genesis games.

Of course the re-release is not without its new bugs, and I have discovered most of them believe me! Anyway a great game and SEGA and Whitehead did a great job. Now lets give S3&K the same treatment.

  3. This time it was more fun to play than it was for me in 2005 with gems collection. But I think the fun in this game is going to past and finding the metal sonic e eggman machines in the past, instead of just running through the stages.

  4. I guess if sonic 4 will have something on its atmosphere that remembers cd since it will be cd’s sequel

  5. All the more reason for them to release more Sonic games on PSN…

    Sonic 3 & Knuckles anyone?…

  6. I don’t understand why people are commenting on the awesome added features of the time-attack, sound test and movie viewer. Because they have been in Sonic CD since day 1 on the Mega CD. They weren’t added, they have always been there.

Granted you had to win the game to unlock the time-attack, and you had to score a low overall time on said time-attack to unlock the sound test and movie viewer. But they were there since 1993, and are not new features at all.

  7. its Sonic CD of course it would be a top seller, because everyone loves the classics and games in modern day just aren’t as good as the 90’s golden era.

  8. Sonic CD was no where near my favourite game…but I’m really happy to see it doing so well! especially against some of those more popular titles.
I guess the fact that it was quite a rare game (I didn’t play it until Gems collection) has meant people who didn’t have access the first time round get to now.

  9. Still not finis the game on my Gems collection but its good to see that it goose well for Sonic! Well i dont now if anyone on here have the SEGA Sonic Generations commemorative statue figure, but i soon gone have it myself! It is my first Sonic Statue! 😀

  10. Wow it’s awesome to see that a Sonic game made over 18 years ago can still out sell modern games today. 🙂 Although I still have two copies of Sonic CD on my PC and in my Sonic Gems Collection so I’ve been debating whether I should buy this version or not even though it has some neat extras. I wanted to ask, anyone who already bought this game on the PSN, can you transfer it from the PS3 to the PSP like with the PS1 classics and can you fly as Tails or is he purely just a Sonic copy like he was in Sonic 2? If Sonic CD can be played on the PSP and you can fly as Tails, I’d buy this game in a heartbeat. 🙂

    1. I think you can’t transfer this game to PSP and yes Tails can fly, just like he did in Sonic 3K

      1. @Lamor Thank you for telling me. 🙂 Not being able to play it on my PSP is a bummer, but being able to fly as Tails sounds interesting. I think I’ll buy it now probably when Sega has one of their yearly sales on the PSN. 😀

  11. the secret behind why the classics are timeless and the best is simple.
Sonic is slow in those games and that’s why they are so great. There I said it out loud. Sega and the gaming media had almost everyone fooled with blue blur this speed demon that but it was just clever marketing to make the games sell and in reality it was just a myth. The myth of Sonic’s speed continued right up until Heroes and from that point on the speed went up and the quality fell. With speed Sonic ceased to be a platformer and the levels were designed instead to be linear race tracks that were highly automated, linear narrow corridors where you hold forward until you fall into a bottomless pit.

Take note Sega, CD is the slowest paced game in the series, slowest even among the classics. Get rid of the speed in the games but continue to perpetuate the myth and Sonic will be great once again.

  12. @neezthehuman

You make a very good point about how much better the slower paced genesis games were.

Funny enough, with CD if you explore the game trying to visit each time zone, collecting as much as you can (rings, lives, destroy the robot making machine) then you can end up moving as fast as the genesis games. This is because the 10 minue time limit makes it impossible to collect everything in the four versions of each zone. I often find that I am racing across the zone to find a time sign post. Half the time you end up almost dancing all over the place to generate the 5 second burst of speed to allow you to time travel. You can be very creative how you do this. Also Wacky Workbench feels very fast the way the electric floor throws you about.

What we mean by fast in a Sonic game can be interpreted in many different ways.

    1. It wouldn’t be a downloadable, though. The Wii has a very strict limit, regarding download size. That’s why it wasn’t released on Wii in the first place. I guess that’s why Sonic 4-2 isn’t on Wii, either.

  13. Sonic, top of charts? Good news, but I’ve just gone cross eyed. I considered buying but I’ve still got the original and an emulator. I’m not sure how 320 x 224 at fullscreen can be considered HD. Have the graphics been reworked?

Also, is the tagline still “See where Sonic 4 began”?. I thought it began with Sonic 1 and left off at Sonic 3.

  14. Complainign about a game like Sonic CD? Wow, you game bashing trolls have no lives, believe me when I say NO GAME IS PERFECT. If you want a better Sonic game, lets see YOU make a better one! (Talking to you, JixHedgehog!)

    1. Listen : Sonic CD is my second favourite game of all time, I would not dare bash it. I am simply pointing out some of the changes that I felt made it not as enjoyable as the original.
I’m not saying don’t buy it, especially if you don’t have the original, it’s a bargain and most of the game is still one of the best Sonics around.

If you enjoyed it, fantastic! If you didn’t, I guess all you can do is keep shut about it *shrugs*
