Sonic Universe’s Silver Saga – Now Fan Animated

Wondered where our artistic friend Elson ‘Darkspeeds’ Wong had gone? Turns out he had bunkered down for many weeks working on a brand new Sonic fan project. Turning his hand to animation, Elson has brought Archie Comics’ Silver Saga from Sonic Universe to life with sound effects, camera pans and original artwork to complement the action within the frames.

It’s a wonderful piece of work, and isn’t without its fair share of stress and challenges. Have a look at the first part of Elson’s work above, which was released to YouTube this morning – then see the video below which takes you behind the scenes of exactly what goes into the project. Along with some impromptu shirt-lifting. Nice.

  1. Aww man! You just HAD to point out my impromptu shirt-lifting moment did you?? *SHOT* XXXD I did it for PLSmith… Screw Janitoir…!

I didn’t realise it till I finished my write-up on BumbleKing Forums and saw your post on twitter. People who are reading this if you’d like to know a bit of context behind this project check out the following link: http://www.bumbleking.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4969

Anyways thank you so kindly Svenda for posting this up on TSS. Like I said I wasn’t expecting it mate, I really appreciate this. πŸ˜‰

  2. Elson ‘Darkspeeds’ Wong: Really great effort. A dedicated peice of work and nicely designed. Can I ask what is the touchscreen computer software you’re using? It looks really useful (and I’m guessing expensive)!

    1. Hi there SeanKP! Thanks for the feedback!

To answer your question it was a little something special that I bought at San Diego Comic Con a couple of months ago.
It’s called the Cintiq21UX – a fully interactive monitor tablet.

Animation and graphic design professionals use it in their studios to produce some top quality illustrations in just a matter of minutes because of how natural it is to use – instead of drawing on the tablet and looking at the screen you get to draw ON the screen like you do with pen and paper.

These babies cost $2200USD at RRP. But at Comic Con they did a direct special – $2000USD which includes the tax AND shipping cost anywhere in the US! I managed to bring it back home with me as carry on luggage!

I’ve saved up for about 2 years to get this. πŸ˜‰ All worth the effort and I hope that you’ll get the opportunity to do so one day should you take your hobby or profession in graphic design/illustration to the next level!

      1. Yup I sure am. πŸ˜€ I don’t really think I have a true Australian accent. If you want that listen to Blitz n’ Pieces – Chris and his gang doing the podcast have true Aussie accents. A genuine G ‘day is something not to be missed! XD

        1. ah ok! I didn’t know you had an Australian accent, yet I watch you at DeviantART.

          Since I didn’t know, I thought Silver’s accent was there on purpose. >.<;;

  3. Normally I’m not one for “motion comics” or whatever the correct term for them is, but this is pretty well-done. And probably the closest and best we’ll get to any sort of SatAM revival.

Digging the use of the music, too; really helps to set things. Not so much on the mid-episode advertising, but I figure it’s just a way to cover one’s ass. XP
And hey, never know; Archie might dig this, too. I recall seeing a video promoting the Megaman comic, that animated parts of the first issue, and I could see them hiring this guy to do the same for Sonic.

    1. Man SatAM revival? I reckon it’s possible in the future. Sonic’s so popular that anything can happen in the fandom. πŸ˜‰

I actually spoke to Paul Kaminski (Editor-in-cheif) and Ian Flynn (Writer) at Comic Con 2011, they were a fantastic bunch of people to talk to. I told Paul that I’d be making this video just as a fan-project. The aim is to encourage people to get into the reading the comics really – and so far it’s been a great result! = )

  4. Elson ‘Darkspeeds’ Wong, if I ever was to make a Sonic game and wanted you to animate some comic style scenes (like in Sonic chronicles) would you be willing to help? πŸ™‚

    1. Dude that sounds like a tempting offer but right now I’m hands full with the next Animated Adaptation project. πŸ˜‰ Maybe one day! And if I can’t help out I wish you all the very best in your Sonic fan game project. *thumbs up*

  5. Voices were pretty bad, wheres the acting, why does everyone forget the acting and focus just on the sounding voice :/
    but it was nicely animated.

  6. That is AMASSING WORK! And to tell you that not all people have there luck to get the comic. We dont have it in Sweden and i have to inbort it if i want to have it and dont forget i am not rich so i cant a fort it:(

    1. Hi there Elizabeth, it’s always a pleasure to reply to fans who are from abroad!

Well at least you got a sample of it! When you get the opportunity to earn yourself an income, get the comics – I guarantee that they won’t disappoint. πŸ˜‰

  7. Vector: “I must find the computer room!”

“No Vector, you ARE the computer room.”

And then Vector was a robot.

  8. very good job in FINALLY seeing archie’s sonic comic come to life. keep up the cool work and the comedy and action.

  9. It’s nice but… it’s not actually very animated at all except for like 3 images in the whole thing. ._.

  10. Despite what most people think, I think Silver is a wonderful character. I love his story. He has to be my 2nd favorite character in the series other than the good old true blue himself. I just hope he gets a bit more attention in the upcoming games. We need more Silver love. Who agrees? =]
