Sonic Generations Second Demo Goes Live

Thanks to Simon Perry via email and some guys in our comments for jumping on this. At around 8pm Tuesday, Sega released the second demo of Sonic Generations on Xbox Live Arcade for Gold account holders.

Sega France, and later Sega Everywhere, late last week confirmed the release for Wednesday, but rapidly backtracked to bring it forward. The PSN release in America, however, was pushed back to Tuesday the 25th.

The demo, the best part of 650 megabytes big, contains the classic Green Hill Zone featured in the previous time-restricted demo, as well as the modern version of the same zone, which has previously only been seen in the press and at game shows. And via hacking of the original demo, but let’s not go there.

PlayStation Network currently does not have the demo, so we’d love it if you guys can give us the heads up when it does!

        1. Don’t Silver accounts at least let you download DLC for games? At least it did for me, with 06, Unleashed, and All-Stars Racing. That’s something at least.

          1. I thought last time the Silver accounts were able to download it just not til a week later.

            Why would you not be able to do at least downloads with a Silver account? I mean I thought that Gold was for those extra bonus features and stuff, but Silver account is still an account. It’s gotta have SOME purpose.

  15. oh…i actually don’t like modern sonic’s gameplay..it looks really cool..but I don’t really like it. Maybe it’s because I’ve been playing adventure too much the past few months.

    1. I know what you mean. It took me some time to get used to it, but once I played Colors I never looked back.

  18. I really like how much you can boost. The short boost gague in Colours (have only played PS2/Wii Sonic Unleashed, can’t say about SU on PS360) is one thing that really irked me.

      1. Every time I played it I found a new path. And it certainly feels even less linear than that, thanks to the depth in the background. Youtube videos don’t do it justice. You really need to play it to realise how much effort has been put into the visuals.

        1. I agree good sir. I didnt think i could get more pumped for this game but playing as modern sonic has stirred something in me. Green hill looks so beautiful. I walked through the stage to see everything lol

Just played it, have to say I’m really impressed by the amount of pathways already, the only awkward thing is transitioning from one Sonic to another, I was trying to use the homing attack as Classic Sonic (facepalm) Also the spin dash is a bit odd, press X rather than the traditional hold down and A (though you can still do this, it feels “off”)

    1. actually no.its pretty much optional,did u try to use spindash by pressing A and Down?
      I know i’m curious about the Demo,but thats cuz i dont have an xbox 360 :-/

      1. @Codeman320: No, classic doesn’t have homing attack, I was just saying that when I switched from modern to classic, I was still thinking about the Modern moveset, I’m sure i’d get used to it when playing the game for real.

        @Denilson: Yeah, you can still use the classic controls, but using the analogue stick with A is awkward so you’re better off using X to charge anyway.
        I’d have preferred to use the D-pad for classic Sonic.

    3. Since launch, Unleashed was my favorite Sonic game. I played it so much, I actually destroyed one copy and had to collect another.

    1. I said I’d wait, but I just had to see how it played. It says it’s not the final version, and there were quite a few things In this build that were different to the one we had back in July.
      I say go for it 😉

        1. No worries, Green Hill Zone only counts as a tutorial stage anyhow, so you can learn everything before you play for real haha

    2. Dude, just make up a new account, get the Gold Trial, download the demo, install it, and go back to your original account. It’s already stored on your hard drive; it’s not Account Exclusive. ;D

  33. Whoa just got finished playing…and to all you guys that cant/haven’t played yet are missing out. Modern Sonic’s act DEFINITELY isn’t boost to win to all you haters that believe in that phrase. I tried and man oh man did it not work….But anyway, Classic Sonic’s physics are spot on and Modern Sonic’s are great…omg…November isn’t close enough.

    2. From recent videos of the game that I’ve seen, I believe you move the analogue stick to do tricks and use the L and R buttons to finish them.

  37. I’ve got both an xbox 360 and PS3 and although I have orderd the game for the PS3, I can’t just sit and wait for the demo to finally get put on PSN and all the Xbox 360 users are playing it. So mines is currently at 50%…

  38. So apparently there is some MORE content in the Sonic Generations 2nd demo. As NovaManXP just pointed out, the Credits music is in there and it sounds glorious. It’s only a matter of time until more stuff is revealed.

    Guys, I don’t want to over-hype this, but I’m gonna be honest. I believe we may have a contender for Best Sonic Game Ever Released. (I had a blast playing Modern GHZ. GHZ is supposedly the most basic modern level. So that means it can only get better from there!)

  41. The only thing i have to get used to again is pressing A twice for homing attack. Im used to unleashed by pressing A to jump and X to close in lol

    1. Same here tried to do the homing attack on the first badnik I came to, next thing I knew a had air dashed past him :O

      I’m more curious on how you complete your combo tricks and also how you drift. If you watch some youtube videos you can actually see sonic drifting, however he goes into his ball animation, just like he does when he hits a dash pad.

      Anyone know how to do these?

      1. I’m kinda confused on the trick system, but you can make Sonic drift by holding the Right Trigger and turning.

        2. It is a confusing trick system which I do like, but I know when I want Sonic to do his last pose to complete the tick combo, I just don’t know how to do it.

          As far as the drifting goes thanks 🙂 I will give it a try using that technique now 😛

          This demo will certainly keep me happy until the full game comes out 😀

          2. The ‘trick’ is (lol) to wiggle the L stick in one direction (randomly) once per combo and then wrap it all up by pressing the LB + RB together.

    2. Yeah. Thats kinda annoying imo. Also switching between grinds is no longer using your bumpers. But to make the confusion more complete, they kept those bumpers for the same movement when your not on grinds.

      I hope in future Sonic Games, the controllerbuttons are kept the same, forever.

    1. Okay, SEGA/Sonic Team are now officially idiotic when it comes to making sure their demos are free of spoiler assets.

      1. Yup…..I wonder what else is in that damn demo :/ I would laugh so hard if a cutscene was in it xD IDK, but there may be more music files coming our way. I can’t believe the network music is the Sonic Gems Collection Menu!!! 😀 IT SOUNDS AWSOME!

  49. the classic sections play great. i like using the down a spindash instead of the x spindash mainly beacuse i feel like the x version is equivilent to boosting so i just dont use it.
    as far as the modern its fun but i just have one complaint and its mainly a complaint with the level. your really just boosting through this level. iv played city escape already so what i see from that and from what iv seen of the other levels the rest of the game isnt like this. theres alot more input from the player in the other levels and alot more platforming (especially in city escape i could barelly boost in that level minus the very beginning and very end). then again this is the first level so i guess its suppose to be an easier level so ill let it slide. all in all im having a great time with both sonics

    1. Simply because the demo go out the 25 October for EVERYONE (Silver Member and PSN) so Sony is just stupid and not uplaod it for PSN+ user.

      Simply because Microsoft have all exclusivity on the demo one week before.

  52. I played the modern demo and the loading screens are a biatch. kinda long… I didn’t know you had to push A for homing attack, i thought it was still X.

          1. First you, Make a folder on your computer called “Content” and inside that folder you make another folder with 16 zeros, “0000000000000000″. And inside that folder (since the file doesn’t come with a folder), just make another folder inside the zeros folder called “5345885F” and inside THAT folder, you make another one called, “00080000″. And then you put the downloaded demo inside that folder.

    4. Slow loading times??? I almost dropped my phone because Sonic was already running. It takes like 3 to 5 seconds to launch a level. Thats just extremely fast imo 🙂

  53. Holy shit. THIS is the best Modern Sonic gameplay I’ve ever experienced, EVER. The controls are smooth, and though you boost a lot, you WILL run out of it sooner or later. It reminds me of Adventure 1 and 2 (specifically of 1) so much. It’s… Wow. Is it bad that I think this should be GOTY? XD

  54. The last time I played before I quit, the graphics were glitching out and EVERYTHING haha, I was going so fast the graphics were loading too slow. It’s probably because of the CD I burnt it on lol. It was like I was running in mid-air.

    1. It kind of glitched out on me the 3rd time around playing it. I don’t know if it was the CD I burnt it on or what lol. but all in all it was pretty fun. the music didn’t start until I got into the open. or sometimes it started when i paused and unpaused the game.

    First I have to import to get my collectors edition (Thank You JB HiFi for shipping internationally!) and now I have to wait until the 2nd demo’s release on PSN. Really, SEGA? This is what I get for supporting you all for 20 years, REALLY?! *sighs again*
    You’re lucky I love Sonic FAR too much to hold that much against you guys…but seriously why is XBLA always first on these things? & I swear to God if I have to have a PSN Plus account to get access to that demo…>.</

    1. Why the hell are you on a playstation these days? Xbox is where it all happends! You can’t blame Sega for Sony’s faults!!

  68. I read a tweet from Sonic20th on Twitter earlier. If it translated correctly, it should be online for PSN users by 12pm (presumably Japanese time).

      1. Roughly translated, this is what the tweet says:

        “From tomorrow, the start of the space-time distribution of the White Sonic Generations trial! You’ll be up around noon as. Later went to Sonic Team, to report assault Toka Maybe”

  76. I can’t get the demo for 360 cus I don’t have gold, and on PS3 I have to download a new update to get to PSN, and there is something wrong at the moment so I can’t get the update! I hate PS3 updates and I hate that I have to have gold to get the new stuff on xbox. *sigh* I guess there won’t be any Sonic for me tonight. DOH!

  79. Got around to playing it today, and it was my first experience with the gameplay. I have to say that I’m pleasantly impressed! I dig the controls for both Classic and Modern! Coming from Unleashed, though, it took me a bit to get used to using A to perform the homing attack again! XD
    The only two VERY minor complaints I have are that there’s a small scripted sequence in Classic Sonic’s level that takes control away from the player for like, one second. And I gave the 3D a try with the scaling all the way up, and while it looked REALLY cool, I did notice a couple tiny framerate drops, but that’s something I can forgive and don’t really even care about.
    I can’t wait to get the full game!

Make a new account,but don’t delete the old account.Get a new msn adress.Set Country to USA/UK.When you try to sign xbox live for second time,It will ask “You have 1 month gold trial,you wannta you use it ? ” to you,after you finished every thing.Select yes,and you will get a new account.Then download the demo to your hard drive.Exit your new account.Enter the old account.Go to the “Game library”.Demo will be there.You can get free godl accounts buy doing that.I tried it 3 times,and all of them was a succes.

  84. Well I’ve played the demo on my PS3, and I gotta say, this game is quite possibly going to be the best Sonic game period. I’m tellin ya, played modern sonic’s level for hours, and I’m just gonna leave this here:

  86. 52 seconds on classic and i’m 13 😀 I absolutely love the classic gameplay. Even though I never was around when the genesis was released, I’ve actually been playing classic sonic games such as Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 since I was 5 years old. Actually now that I think about it… Sonic 1 was my first game that I’ve ever played in my life.
