Sonic Adventure came out in 1998, though. That’s when a lot of people consider the decline to have started. Others will point at Heroes or Shadow or even 06, but you can’t deny that even the Adventure series isn’t exactly universally liked.
No, actually many people considered Heroes the start of it, after 06 people just tried to find something to complain about, so they picked 3d for no good reason (count, there are more good 3d Sonic games then there are good classic games 5 (3d) to 4(2d)!!, and I only counted 3d, not modern in general).
