NBC might be losing over $200 million broadcasting the Winter Olympics, but that doesn’t mean everybody has to. SEGA and Nintendo decided to remind us that the Mario and Sonic series prints money. How good are times at SEGA HQ? Just ask SEGA West CEO Mike Hayes:
“The original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was a huge success for SEGA,” commented Mike Hayes, CEO for SEGA America and SEGA Europe. “Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is one of the leading third party games for Wii and DS and we were confident the title would have longevity within retail. The start of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games is a perfect time to ensure SEGA is at the forefront of the consumer’s mind when it comes to recreating that Olympic Winter Games feeling in living rooms everywhere.”
Funny. Not once have I thought of blue hedgehogs and pudgy plumbers while watching the games. Oh, press releases…
Speaking of the Winter Olympics, is anybody here watching them as avidly as I am?! Speed skating and snowboarding have been very entertaining, but nothing is as compelling as the play unfolding in men’s ice hockey. A classic battle between Russia and the Czech Republic unfolds this afternoon, but USA vs. Canada will be in an all-out rivalry game at 7:40 PM EST tonight. Canada, David Backes will run you over.
I tried watching some events earlier.
Bitterly disappointed when the guy on the skis wasn’t a super-cool blue hedgehog, but rather some regular chap in one of those full-body spandex jumpsuits.
Turned off. Played some SONIC UNLEASHED instead.
I love Mario and Sonic at the Olympic winter Games. I play it everyday and I almost have every gold medal with all the characters. It’s a great game for us hardcore Sonic/ Mario fans and I’m really glad it is doing so well.
use that money sega!!
I am quite enjoying the games. I live really close to Vancouver and when I went downtown, it was PACKED. The Olympics have been a lot of fun, and everyone’s trying really hard for gold.
The Slovaks beat the Russians….time for their Czech brothers to do the same.
This Russia/Czech Republic game is awesome.
Take out the hedgehogs and plumbers and I still have to ask myself: Why is the game more entertaining than the Games? Not that I’m saying that the Games are bad or anything…
“use that money sega!!”
This.
@TheRadicalMoron
Maybe it’s because in one you’re just watching things happen on-screen and in the other you’re actually participating? Seems quite obvious, really.
on the contray the olympics did remind me of mario and sonic at the winter games. I seen some curling footage and went like damn i did that in the game XD
Ah, I’m watching the games as much as i can, those extreme sports like skeleton and super-g are thrilling! Unfortunately I don’t have a Wii, but this game must be cool, I always enjoyed this type of game. I remember playing the ’94 Lillehammer game for mega drive and the ’98 Nagano for the psx, damn, I had fun with those games 🙂
Go Brazil! (Not that we have any chance, but there are some brazilian athletes there)
@Glenn: Judging by your final sentence, the Skiing must have been INSANELY boring…
(ah, and sorry for spamming the word “game”, I was too busy here when I wrote that comment)
I watched the speed skating when I had a chance and it was enjoyable, it looks extremely tough.
Great news for Sega too, I wonder if they would consider a platformer with Nintendo after this..
