Sonic the Hedgehog Coming to Japanese Mobile Phones

It was only a matter of time before Sonic hit Japanese mobile phones. SEGA has announced that a version of the hit platforming game will be made for i-Appli phones this summer, as the latest addition to Sonic Team’s Sonic Café lineup.

The game will feature original stages, but obviously you’ll have to maintain any expectations of graphical quality – the Sonic Café games are running on tiny phones, so as you can see in the screenshots there’s little in the way of backgrounds or scenery.

It’ll probably be fun for a short blast though, and SEGA is offering the game for free between June 18 and July 31, so you can’t really say no at that price. Well, unless you don’t live in Japan. Then you’ll be forced to say no. Because you won’t be able to play it.

As an aside, the Sonic Café service is currently running on the NTT DoCoMo’s iMode internet access system, which is absolutely massive with more than 20 million subscribers as of March 2001. Don’t be surprised to see more SEGA games on there in the future.
