Today people across the globe will be turning their calendars to 2nd February, which means it’s Groundhog Day – or, as SEGA have deemed it in the past few years, “Hedgehog Day”, coinciding with the release date of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in the US back in 1994. To mark this occasion, a special post has been put up on the official SEGA Blog – and maybe there’s a bit more to it than first meets the eye…

Sega have announced a new deal with toy manufacturer Sambro International. The deal allows Sambro to produce a series of new Sonic board games, travel games and jigsaw puzzles as well as ‘action games.’
What do they define as ‘action games’ you might ask? Well according to the press release, this includes Pinball, Four in a Row (Connect 4), Fire Balls, Air Hockey, Rapid Fire and Magnetic Scribblers.

So this was a bit of a surprise, last year Pix ‘N Love released the awesome ‘The History of Sonic the Hedgehog’ book. An English translation was promised and released a few weeks ago in the US and the UK by Udon Entertainment. When asked if there would be a Collectors Edition of the book in English, Ash Paulsen (Udon Entertainment’s associate editor) said that there would be just the one standard edition.
However, last night Pix ‘N Love announced that there would be a Collectors Edition and that it’s available to order, right now! Over at the Pix ‘N Love website, they’re now taking orders for ‘The History of Sonic the Hedgehog Collectors Edition’. The price tag is £29.99 and there’s also a £6 charge for shipping.

Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett has just informed us over on the SSMB that a patch for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed will be with us as soon as the code is approved by SEGA. The patch will contain fixes for many of the bugs and glitches that have been found and reported, so more good clean fun for everyone!

On February 3rd 2013, Japanese online TV show Puyo-Puyo will be hosting a live stream event. Their guests? Sonic Team. The staff members joining the Puyo-Puyo team are as follows.
Tadashi Takezaki/SEGA
Takashi Iizuka/Producer
Jun Senoue/Sound Director
Kazuyuki Hoshino/Art Director
It might not be related. But… February 3rd is a day after Groundhog day, a day which Sega have unofficially called ‘Hedgehog Day’ due to their tradition with making big announcements either on or around it. Could it be?

UPDATE: It’s been rated for Nintendo 3DS by the US ratings board the ESRB, too.
A new rating has appeared for the Game Gear title Sonic Drift 2, suggesting that the game may finally be heading overseas to the Nintendo 3DS eShop following its release last year in Japan. The racing title was rated January 8th by the Australian Classification Board, with SEGA Europe as publisher, meaning the game is likely at least heading to Australia and Europe sometime soon. Oddly, the game is listed for ‘DVD’ as the platform, but is most likely a mistake. We’ll let you know when we hear more.

Ever wanted to see Sonic decked out in body armor from the Warhammer 40,000 series? Well here you go! For those of you who’ve been following long on other websites, you may have heard that SEGA recently acquired Relic Entertainment in the THQ auction. Relic is a developer known for developing games in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise, as well as the RTS series Company of Heroes.
The above picture was drawn by Relic senior animator Michael Moore. “By popular demand of the happy & relieved Relic employees, they got me to draw a 40k Sonic on the Kitchen blackboard. Chalk, freehand, with a glance at Internet ref for Sonic’s head”. Not a bad way for Relic to celebrate its continued survival under SEGA and to introduce itself to SEGA fans!

Over at the Sega forums, Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett dropped a big hint with regards to possible DLC for Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. When asked if there was anything related to DLC that could be revealed he replied with this,
Actually… We got approval for a specific character this morning. But that’s all I can say right now… 😛

Sources close to SEGA have informed The Sonic Stadium that the publisher intends to announce/tease a new game within the Sonic the Hedgehog series next month. Sonic fans will recall that February 2nd is of course what SEGA calls ‘Hedgehog Day’, a day the company usually likes to tease fans about upcoming Sonic games. However, one of our sources states that the game won’t be announced until mid-February, while another just says we “will hear about it from official sources next month”. It’s likely SEGA could tease a reveal on Hedgehog Day and make a proper announcement later in the month. Continue reading RUMOUR: SEGA to Announce New Sonic Game Next Month?

Sega of America just released a handy video showing you how to destroy the Expert Ghost on Adders Lair. The interesting thing about this footage? It would appear to be from the PC version of the game.
With the exception of the character trailer released a few days ago, this is the first full gameplay footage shown of the PC build. The PC version is released at the end of this month on Steam and a retail edition is planned for Europe too.
Now… In the video, Sega get a time of 1:21.270. Fellow Blue Believers, beat that time!

That’s pretty much Sonic’s main gaming history not including side games and Colors. Even if you have these games on other consoles, it’d be kinda nice to have them all together on your P.C. Don’tcha think? It doesn’t say when this sale ends, but I’m sure it won’t last too long.

EAG is an arcade/amusement expo in which various companies show off arcade machines and other coin operated attractions. The plush was due to be shown next week at the event, however, it seems that someone has jumped the gun as earlier today Sega Amusements announced the entire range on their own website.

Depending on your outlook, if you’ve not seen Sonic Underground before, that might be considered a good thing. It’s no secret that the show wasn’t that great. But if you’ve ever had a desire to see the show today is your ‘lucky’ day.
Series 1 & 2 of Sonic Underground is now available to download on iTunes. So if you’ve never seen the series before and feel like giving it a shot, by all means head over to iTunes and download away. Episodes are priced at $1.99 each and each volume (20 episodes) can be bought for $27.99. I probably should point out here that the entire 40 episodes are available on DVD and can be purchased for much less than that.

Last year, Meccano released a series of Sonic construction toys. Sonic & Knuckles in their ASR cars, and several playset’s based on various zones from Sonic’s 20 year history.
According to Toy World Magazine, Meccano is expanding the range of toys with some new additions. Sky Sanctuary is going to be added as a playset and another stage which is just labeled as ‘Canyon.’ The magazine claims that these stages will be based off ‘Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing,‘ but, considering Sky Sanctuary isn’t in the original ASR, it might be reasonable to assume that ‘canyon‘ refers to the Dragon Canyon from ASRT.

Update: Some people have pointed out that this might be a one day offer, it’s not uncommon for IOS apps to become free for a day and then return to their normal price.

My fellow Canadians, and to my good Australian friends… the dark days are over.
CHRISTMAS IS FREAKING REAL.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg!
I am pleased and downright tearful to announce that SEGA soundtracks have finally expanded their presence to other iTunes territories! While the US, most European nations, and Japan have gotten each digital soundtrack release as they came, many of us were forced to sit idly by as more and more OSTs just went on by and missed us. As of now, those days have finally come to an end!
Confirmed as of now for Canada and Australia, most – if not all – of SEGA’s expansive repertoire on iTunes can now be purchased! In the mood for Sonic Rush sounds? You can finally get what u need! If you think you’re dreaming (and I don’t blame you), try looking up both NiGHTS into Dreams and NiGHTS: Journey into Dreams – they’re on there! Still can’t understand this concept? Then turn your attention to the tunes of Jet Set Radio and see for yourself!
A complete list of available SEGA OSTs are up after the jump!

Sonic and Danica get into more mischief in this “driver’s ed” ad in which they try to show you the proper way to handle being in an accident mainly by throwing garbage at each other and running over monkeys. Hey AiAi, you have a car too y’know? Heck, you at least have a giant ball you can crawl in for some protection man! I wonder what he did to piss off Sonic so badly? Enjoy.

It’s taken a good couple of months of rumours and speculation, but at last we can finally put aside the doubts that have been surrounding an Android release of Sonic Jump, SEGA’s mobile-exclusive digital title. As revealed on the official Sonic the Hedgehog Facebook page, the blue blur has now leapt his way onto Google Play – better late than never!

SEGA Japan has recently put up a new website archiving all of its digital download games, and thanks to the keen eyes of Woun over at Sonic Scene, we’ve got some interesting news to report. If you take a look underneath Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II, you can see not only SEGA listed as a copyright holder, but PROPE, too. PROPE, as a lot of you will know, is the developer founded by Sonic the Hedgehog’s original creator, Yuji Naka. Could this mean Yuji Naka’s development studio had a part in Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘s development, or is it just an error?
Thanks to SSMB member and Sonic Scene founder Woun for the heads up!

If you’ve been holding out for when this game would receive a discount, today’s the day! Well… for PS3 owners living in the EU that is. As part of Sony’s Festive Sale, Sonic 4: Episode 2 is now half price and members of Playstation Plus can receive an additional discount too.
From now until January 9th 2013 you can get the game for £4.99 or if you’re a PS+ user £4.49. Considering the original price on this was £9.99 that’s quite a decent saving. Remember this is only for people living in the EU right now, you will probably have to wait until next week to find out if the same deal is offered to US residents.
Thanks to Carbo for the tip.

On October 10th 2012, Sega announced that anyone who purchased a copy of ASRT would receive a free Hot Wheels Danica/Danicar toy from selected retailers. However, as ASRT’s release date drew closer, many had assumed that the promotion had been cancelled as nothing more was mentioned about it.
It has been 25 days after ASRT released on the 3 main consoles, and a week after it’s release on the Vita here in the EU. Sega has now given details as to how you get the toy… You have to buy the game again!

Retailers have been listing another delay for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on 3DS for a little while now, but in their new release schedule, Nintendo has confirmed the delay to February 2013 for Europe. US and Australian retailers are also listing a delay to February 2013, so expect a delay in those territories, too.
SEGA hasn’t commented on this fresh delay, with their website still saying it’s out now in Europe and Australia, and will release December 11th 2012 in the US. The PS Vita version has been quietly released in Europe today, still without release date information, game details, screenshots and video from SEGA. If that’s anything to go by, things don’t look promising for the 3DS version.

Update: It would appear that despite being available to download for a number of hours and even the Playstation Blog staff confirming that it was up for sale, ASRT has been pulled from the Playstation Store. No idea why at this time, though a guess would be that it’s because the official release date is December 7th.
Original Story: You know whats really odd? With the exception of 4 screenshots and 3 seconds of footage from a random Nintendo conference. There has been no media at all released of ASRT on either the 3DS or Vita, it’s all been for the consoles. Yet here we are!
Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed is now available to download from the Playstation Vita store. This is currently only available in the EU and is priced at £34.99. There is no word yet as to if the content is locked until Friday December 7th when the games official release date is.

S0L to the rescWiiUe! … … Don’t blame me for the terrible pun it was Shadzter’s idea!
Well guys, it’s taken nearly two weeks. But Nintendo might have finally decided to release the ASRT Wii-U patch in US territories. Ever since launch, US owners have been plagued with difficulties which have prevented content from being unlocked and the ability to actually beat the game as well as issues with the Wii-U exclusive modes. But for EU users, no such problems to report, the fix has been live in the EU since the game launched here last week.
However, according to Executive Producer Steve Lycett, it’s time to grab your 70’s trousers and party! For people living in the US, the new patch will be live in a matter of hours!

Retailers have been listing the PS Vita version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for release in Europe on December 7th 2012 for a while, but now Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett aka S0L has confirmed the date at our very own SSMB.
I’m waiting for confirmation over on the US side, but the EU Vita version should be out this Friday on the 7th December
A post by SSMB member BlueTidalGamer reporting on his copy being despatched reaffirms this.
My copy of the Vita version has dispatched from ShopTo.
SEGA Europe still hasn’t announced a date and both their website and press site to this day still say it and the 3DS version have been out since November 16th 2012 with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
As for the US, Lycett says in the above quoted post that he’s waiting for confirmation of a release date from SEGA of America. With retailers listing a new date of December 18th 2012, this indicates that the PS Vita version may well not meet its originally announced release date of December 11th 2012, though SEGA of America’s website is still listing that same date.

If you live in the US right now and own a Wii-U copy of ASRT, it’s not been the smoothest of experiences.
However for people living in the EU, it seems that we may never experience the same problems that US owners are currently facing. The update currently available for EU owners of ASRT doesn’t cause the problems that US owners are currently facing.
